This systematic review evaluates the effects of heat treatments in de novo, residual and recurrent giant cell tumors of bone (GCTB). Studies were eligible for inclusion if one of the following treatments was administered: radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation, argon cauterization, electrocauterization and hot liquid treatment. The primary outcome was recurrence. Secondary outcomes were complications, pain, function, and quality of life. Recurrence rates for microwave ablation as an adjuvant to intralesional curettage were 0%, 4% and 10% (3 retrospective single-group studies); for argon cauterization 4%, 8% and 26% (3 cohort studies); electrocauterization 0% to 33% (8 cohort studies); and hot liquid 9...

OBJECTIVE: Pharmacotherapy is the most common strategies to reduce pain for osteoarthritis (OA) patients. To analyze the trend and pattern of prescription analgesic medication use in American OA patients. Besides, our study also tried to figure out the demographic characteristics of opioid use among OA population which may helpful for managing the use of opioids. METHODS: We included 2214 OA patients from 2007 to 2018. We extracted data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database...

PURPOSE: Research is vital for evidence-based surgery. Understanding scientometric differences among surgical specialties has scope to inform discussions within and across surgical specialities to develop and maintain a culture of research productivity. This study aims to quantify Australian orthopaedic surgical academic productivity compared to the other specialties within the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons' (RACS). METHODS: A list of Australian surgeons registered with RACS was compiled using the "find a surgeon" function on the RACS Web site...

PURPOSE: Polymethyl-methacrylate cement (PMMA) is often used as bone defect reconstruction material after surgical removal of giant cell tumors. The purpose of this study was to investigate if the application of PMMA improves the local recurrence rates for giant cell tumors (GCT) of appendicular bone treated with intralesional curettage. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all appendicular GTCs treated at two major Danish sarcoma centres between the 1st of January 1998 and December 31st 2013; minimum follow-up of 3...

PURPOSE: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) may be comorbid with diabetes mellitus (DM), and physical activity is a recommended lifestyle strategy for both diseases. The present study investigated the physical activity differences by intensity between knee OA patients with or without DM, and evaluated if physical activity was associated with the presence of DM in knee OA patients. METHODS: A total of 183 patients (mean age 74.9 ± 6.4 years) with moderate-to-severe knee OA underwent evaluation of knee function (i...

PURPOSE: 3D-printed models rapidly evolving in orthopaedic. Studies show that 3D-printed models used for preoperative planning improve a better understanding of fracture morphology and reduce operative time, blood loss and frequency of fluoroscopy, but there are no studies that investigated possible advantages in the outcomes and complications for the treatment of distal radius fracture (DRF). Our study aims to evaluate short-term functional results and complications between two groups treated DRF using 3D-printed models for preoperative planning and without...

This updated systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to further evaluate the role of tourniquets use in patients undergoing TKA for knee osteoarthritis by introducing trial sequential analysis. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched. We used the Cochrane risk of bias tool for quality assessment. The distal tibiofibular syndesmosis (DTFS) is more frequently injured than previously thought. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment is essential to avoid long term complications like chronic instability, early osteoarthritis and residual pain. Management of these injuries require a complete understanding of the anatomy of DTFS, and the role played by the ligaments stabilizing the DTFS and ankle. High index of suspicion, appreciating the areas of focal tenderness and utilizing the provocative maneuvers help in early diagnosis...

The deltoid ligament is the primary stabilizer of the medial side of the ankle joint. It is a complex structure with an origin at the medial malleolus from where it spreads fan shaped distally with an insertion into the medial side of the talus, calcaneus and navicular bone. This chapter gives an overview of the anatomy, function, and pathology of the deltoid ligament. The deltoid ligament can become insufficient as a result of an ankle injury or prolonged strain. In the acute setting, deltoid insufficiency often coincides with multi ligament injury the ankle joint; syndesmosis injury, or ankle fractures...

Carlo Angelo V Borbon
Lateral ankle instability is one of the most common problems seen in the orthopaedic setting. Proper diagnosis is essential in order to provide the ideal treatment for these patients. All patients are subjected to nonoperative management in the form of functional rehabilitation. For those, however, who did not respond well to therapy, surgical treatment is then recommended. There are several surgical techniques available which have been meticulously studied and discussed in previous articles. The focus of this paper is on the author's perspective on choosing the surgical technique based on the quality of the anterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligament remnants...

Subtalar instability is a confusing yet important condition in patients with lateral ankle instability. The author will explore subtalar kinematics, and how they are closely related to the joint stability of the subtalar joint, both with respect to its intrinsic ligaments and its extrinsic ligaments. As subtalar instability is difficult to diagnose, this article will provide readers with a better understanding of its clinical presentation. Discussions will also include useful radiographic modalities and the most recent evidence regarding their accuracy...
