BACKGROUND: Indoxyl sulfate (IS) and p-cresyl sulfate (pCS) are two key protein-bound uremic toxins that accumulate in patients with end-stage renal disease. IS and pCS cannot be efficiently removed by conventional hemodialysis because they are highly bound to proteins.
