Prognostic factors in Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) are scarce. Tumour budding (TB) has been shown to have a prognostic role in different cancers but has not been explored in MCC. We aimed to determine if TB influences survival in MCC. We performed a retrospective evaluation of 45 cases of MCC in a cancer centre. This included a survival analysis involving TB in patients with MCC, and we searched for variables associated with TB. The mean age of the patients was 69 years...

Ectopic mammary gland tissue in the vulva is an exceptionally rare disease. We present a case of a 62-year-old woman with a left vulvar mass of 30 years duration that progressively increased in size. The patient reported having pressure and discomfort, especially during movement. Surgical excision was performed, and a histopathological examination revealed a well-differentiated ectopic breast. We also review other cases of vulvar ectopic breast to further comprehend the characteristics of this rare disease...

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused respiratory system diseases and affected people's access to healthcare services for diseases other than COVID-19. After the COVID-19 pandemic, changes occurred in the number and content of pathology laboratory samples, related to measures such as reducing the number of outpatient clinics in hospitals, postponing elective surgery, and restricting cancer screening. All samples sent to the pathology laboratory between 2019 and 2020 were included in our study...

CD98 is a marker of cancer stem cells, and it regulates radiosensitivity in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The current study aimed to investigate whether CD98 can be used as a prognostic factor and marker of radioresistance. CD98 immunostaining was performed using biopsy specimens collected from patients diagnosed with HNSCC. The average period of postoperative monitoring was 31.6 months. The treatment options were radiation therapy with either cisplatin or cetuximab, and surgery. The participants were divided into groups of low and high fluorescence intensity...

In cancer research, the mechanism underlying the immune response to a tumour has been of great interest. In this study, we investigated the role of CD274 (programmed cell death-ligand 1 - PD-L1) and CD3+ tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in the prognosis of advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. We retrospectively examined primary tumour specimens from stage III/IV CRC patients operated on between 2008 and 2018. We found a significant association between these biomarkers and pT stage (PD-L1, p = 0...

The HER2 gene is a biomarker for breast cancer prognosis and treatment. Overexpression of HER2 protein determined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) or amplification of the HER2 gene determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is a condition for qualifying patients for anti-HER2 therapy. Due to the high toxicity of anti-HER2 treatment, proper patient selection is essential. In our study we compared 40 cases with IHC staining of HER2 antibody determined by Ventana PATHWAY anti-HER2/neu antibody (4B5) as HER2 2+ with the new antibody (HercepTest™ mAb PharmDx [Dako Omnis] [GE001])...

Ku70/80 protein inhibitors reduce the repair of DNA double-strand breaks via the Ku70/80 pathway, so they can be used to treat cancers with Ku70/80 overexpression. Since the association of Ku70/80 with germline CHEK2 mutations in breast cancer is unknown, in this study we evaluated the expression of Ku70/80 in breast cancers with germline CHEK2 mutations. Immunohistochemistry with a Ku70/80 antibody on tissue microarrays from 225 CHEK2-associated breast cancers was used and automatically assessed with computerized image analysis...

This study aims to determine the prognostic significance of programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in triple- negative breast cancer (TNBC). PD-L1 expression and TIL percentage were determined in TNBCs that did not receive neoadjuvant therapy. The relationship between PD-L1 expression and the percentage of TILs with survival was investigated. The presence of intratumoural PD-L1-positive tumour-infiltrating immune cells (TIICs) in tumours with ≥ 1% PD-L1 expression was identified as a new PD-L1 evaluation parameter...

Leiomyosarcoma is one of the most common types of soft tissue sarcoma in adults, and it can occur in almost any part of the body. Uterine leiomyosarcoma constitutes 1% of all gynaecological tumours. Most diagnosed sarcomas are not even suspected before surgery. However, in recent years, awareness of their presence in society has increased. Our case aims to draw attention to the need for better cooperation between pathologists and clinicians and reduce the time from suspicion of the disease to final diagnosis...

Vulval tumours are rare, representing merely 4% of all gynaecological neoplasms. 98% of vulvar lesions are benign, and only 2% are malignant. Of all vulvar malignancies, while squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignancy, leiomyosarcomas of the vulva are extremely rare. Usually these tumours have nonspecific clinical manifestations, often leading to misdiagnoses of Bartholin cysts or abscesses. We describe a case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with a nonspecific painless swelling in the left vulva for 2 months which was diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma of the vulva on biopsy as well as resection...

Lobular capillary hemangioma, a benign vascular tumor of the skin or mucous membranes characterized by rapid growth and a friable surface, is widely but inappropriately termed pyogenic granuloma (now considered a misnomer by some theories) due to lack of evidence for infectious etiopathogenesis. Some studies promote the theory of a hyperplastic, neovascular response to an angiogenic stimulus with imbalance of promoters and inhibitors. Here we present a series of 4 cases of patients who visited the Oral Medicine OPD with a complaint of similar painless malformations showing granulomatous and/or fibrous tissue proliferation andwhich, after thorough history taking, clinical examination and excisional biopsy, were revealed to be lobular capillary hemangioma under histopathologic diagnosis...

Obg-like ATPase 1 (OLA1) is a member of the Obg family of P-loop NTPases and has recently been detected in several human cancer cells. However, its expression type and clinical relevance in gastric cancer remains unclear. In the present study, mRNA level of OLA1 in gastric cancer (GC) was detected in 2 datasets downloaded from the open Gene Expression Omnibus database and 30 cancer tissues. Immunohistochemistry was performed on GC and its association with Snail in 334 GC patients. The results showed that OLA1 mRNA and protein were elevated in GC tissues...

Tumour budding (TB) in cancer is a phenomenon of tumour cells forming clusters, and it is associated with an epithelial-mesenchymal transition into the extracellular matrix of the tumour. It has been shown that the presence of TB in colorectal cancer (CRC) is associated with worse overall survival, higher possibility for vessel invasion, lymph node involvement, and distant metastases appearance. In this retrospective study TB presence in operated patients for CRC is analysed...

It has been demonstrated in many studies that angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism is related to Henoch-Schonlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) risk in children. However, this conclusion remains controversial. In this study, we systemically retrieved relevant studies in electronic databases such as PUBMED, CNKI, and EMBASE followed by calculation of odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). In addition, meta-package in STATA version 12.0 was used. Angiotensin-converting enzyme I/D polymorphism was related to HSPN susceptibility in children (D vs...

Neuropathological central nervous system (CNS) post-mortem examination is a highly specialistic element of the autopsy procedure with methodological specificity. Herein we propose updated recommendations for CNS autopsy for pathologists and neuropathologists. The protocol includes the compendium of neuroanatomy with current nomenclature, consecutive steps of gross examination, as well as appropriate sampling algorithms in different clinical and pathological settings. The significance of pathoclinical cooperation in differential diagnosis is exposed...
