AIM: To assess the in vitro effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on uterine contractions in pregnant and non-pregnant rats. METHODS: The study was performed at the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, King Saud University from December 2016 to October 2017. Intact uterine samples were obtained from non-pregnant (n=7-8) and term-pregnant (n=6-7) rats. Small longitudinal uterine strips were dissected and mounted in an organ bath. Isometric force measurements were used to assess the effect of 400, 800, and 1000 μM H2O2 on spontaneous uterine contractions and contractions induced by oxytocin (5 nM), high calcium (Ca+2) solution (6 mmol/L), and high potassium chloride (KCl) solution (60 mmol/L)...

AIM: To compare the national reference percentile values for body height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents in Slovakia with international standards and to analyze growth trends in this population. METHODS: The study was designed as a repeated cross-sectional survey. Two nationwide anthropometric surveys (NAS) performed in 2001 and 2011 assessed body weight, height, and BMI of 38 692 children aged 7 to 18 years. Age- and sex-specifıc smoothed percentiles were generated with the lambda-mu-sigma method...

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) is a rare complication of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), an effective and safe treatment for severe cases of depression and psychosis. There are reports on 16 patients who developed TC after ECT, and these were predominantly female patients treated with antidepressants for depressive disorder. We describe a case of a 40-year-old male patient, with a history of schizophrenia and heavy caffeine and nicotine use, treated for acute psychotic episode with haloperidol and clozapine...

METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 74 patients treated at the outpatient clinic of Public Health Institute of Split-Dalmatia County from 2013-2016. Concentrations of methadone and its main inactive metabolite were measured in participants' biological samples on regular check-ups. Urine samples obtained before oral methadone intake, and blood and urine samples obtained 90 minutes after methadone intake were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry...

AIM: To investigate international medical students' attitudes toward the impact of 6-year longitudinal course, Fundamentals of Medical Skills (FMS), at Medical Studies in English at the University of Zagreb on the development of their practical, clinical, and communication skills. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used a 23-item online survey to collect data from five generations of students attending the FMS course from January 31 to February 3, 2017. AIM: To estimate the frequency and localization of acute (traumatic) and chronic (overuse) injuries in a population of masters rowers with respect to their age subgroups and assess the association between injury occurrence and different training modalities, rowing experience, previous competition level, and current rowing practice. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 743 masters rowers who participated in the 34th International Federation of Rowing Associations (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d'Aviron, FISA) World Rowing Masters Regatta held in Zagreb, September 2-9, 2007...

Excessive metal femoral head wear has been described only as revision surgery complication after primary ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty (THA). Here, we present the first case of metal femoral head wear after primary metal-on-polyethylene THA. A 56-year-old woman was referred to our outpatient clinic 17 years after primary right-sided THA, experiencing pain and decreased right hip range of motion. Radiographic examination revealed acetabular cup dislocation, eccentric femoral head wear, damaged titanium porous coating of femoral stem, metallosis, and pseudotumor formation...

AIM: To evaluate the relationship between the dynamics of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) brain metabolite levels at the beginning of the recovery phase of the index depressive episode and the time to the recurrence of depression. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed the changes in N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), choline (Cho), and glutamate-glutamine in 48 patients with recurrent depression treated with maintenance antidepressant monotherapy at a stable dose...

AIM: To analyze the distribution of SLC6A4 gene polymorphisms in Crohn's disease (CD) patients and their association with the disease. METHODS: We evaluated the presence/absence of promoter (5-HTTLPR, rs25531) and intron 2 (STin2 VNTR) polymorphic variants of SLC6A4 gene in a retrospective case-control study including 192 CD patients and 157 healthy controls (HC). Genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction. The association of polymorphisms with CD and its clinical subtypes was analyzed using χ2 and Fisher exact test, binary logistic regression, and haplotype analysis...

AIM: To assess the association between renal replacement therapy (RRT) and post-transplant infection incidence. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included 158 patients who underwent heart transplantation (HTx) in our center from 2008 to 2016, survived beyond the first post-procedural day, and had available microbial data. The patients were dichotomized according to the need for periprocedural RRT. Twenty-seven patients in RRT group had lower preoperative creatinine clearance, greater body mass index, and higher likelihood of having diabetes...

AIM: To identify the involvement of Secreted Frizzled Related Protein 1 (SFRP1) promoter hypermethylation in different malignancy grades of astrocytoma and assess its association with beta-catenin, lymphoid-enhancer factor 1, and T-cell factor 1. METHODS: Twenty-six astrocytoma samples were collected from 2008-2015. Promoter hypermethylation was evaluated by methylation-specific polymerase-chain-reaction and protein expression by immunohistochemistry and stereological analysis...

AIM: To analyze postnatal development and life-span changes of apical dendrite side branches (oblique dendrites) from associative layer IIIC magnopyramidal neurons in the human dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and to compare the findings with the previously established pattern of basal dendrite development. METHODS: We analyzed dendritic morphology from 352 rapid-Golgi impregnated neurons (10-18 neurons per subject) in Brodmann area 9 from the post-mortem tissue of 25 subjects ranging in age from 1 week to 91 years...
