The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is essential for maintaining wrist stability. Injury-caused pain is the primary cause of ulnar wrist pain. The TFCC injury refractory to conservative treatment requires further surgical treatment, and because Palmer type IB tears belong to peripheral injuries due to their proximity to the blood supply area, arthroscopic suture repair has become the preferred surgical method for TFCC injury repair, exhibiting strong healing ability. This study reviewed the anatomy of TFCC, injury classification, and advances in arthroscopic suturing for treating Palmer type IB...

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) in balance training for the prevention of falls in older adults. METHODS: We included studies with experimental designs, cohort studies, and quasi-experimental studies of older adults who underwent balance training associated with the use of VR for the prevention of falls. The comparison of control and intervention groups in the studies reported statistically significant improvements in terms of balance for VR...

REVIEW
Kevin C McLeod, F Alan Barber
The pivot shift test, in contrast to the Lachman or anterior drawer, is a manually subjective clinical test that simulates the injury mechanism. It is the most sensitive test to determine ACL insufficiency. This paper reviews the history, development, research, and treatment associated with the pivot shift phenomenon which is associated with tearing and loss of function of the knee anterior cruciate ligament. The pivot shift test most closely recapitulates what the symptomatic anterior cruciate ligament deficient patient feels is happening which is an abnormal translation and rotation of the injured joint during flexion or extension...

PURPOSE: One of the most frequent concerns of the increasing number of patients undergoing shoulder arthroplasty is the possibility to resume sport after surgery. This systematic review determined the rate of return to sport after total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and hemiarthroplasty (HA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines were followed to perform this systematic review. A systematic electronic search was performed using the PubMed (MEDLINE), EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases...

For the purpose of this article, we will not use individual sports as the primary delineator; however, the two different levels of play: High School and Collegiate. We plan to share insight that we have gained through decades of practice treating High School sports and collegiate athletes. This article offers readers reliable guidance on not only treating the athlete's hand but understanding the person as a whole and the struggles at each level of play.

Golf is unique in this compendium of sports-related hand and wrist injury management. It is the only sport where the ball is stationary and there is no opponent against whom the player is defending. This distinctive sport dates to the 15th century in Scotland and is one of the oldest sports, but it is one where technology has changed many of the fundamental elements-from the "playing field (through advanced in agronomy) and the equipment (club and ball technology).

Basketball presents several characteristics that distinguishes it from other contact sports and can influence the manner by which a Team Physician and Hand Surgery Consultant interact. An abbreviated list of pathologies that affect the basketball athlete and the approach to their evaluation and treatment by a Hand Surgeon are described in context of return-to-play.

Ice hockey is a high-speed sport played on a slippery ice surface, using sharp skate blades, rigid sticks with a hard rubber puck, and allowing full-force physical contact that includes body checking and fighting. Although many of the same injuries to the hand and wrist occur that are seen in other sports, there is a higher frequency of certain injuries in the hockey athlete due to the forces involved, the way the hockey stick is gripped, torqued, and used, and the fact that players can slash one another with their sticks...

This study covers the importance of trust between players and healthcare providers in the incident of upper extremity injury and aspects of when return-to-play is favorable. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The methods and materials used in this study were a collection of case reviews and documentation of injuries reported by national leagues...

The approach to the care of baseball athletes and organizations is influenced by 2 factors that distinguish it from other sports: the number of contests and the number of players. America's pastime is a marathon that can (if successful in the regular season and postseason play) stretch over a 10-months, 162+-game schedule. In addition, unlike other major North American sports, baseball's "feeder system" is the highly-structured Minor League Baseball. This is in contradistinction to caring for 15 basketball players who arrive at the professional level through collegiate (or even high school) play or 20 hockey players that may have had an NCAA experience or come through the Junior Leagues in Canada...

The role of an experienced Hand Surgery Consultant within the complete care matrix for a professional sports organization has evolved in my 3-decade career. Granted, hand injuries may have been demoted in this population where ACL tears, shoulder dislocations, and Lisfranc injuries seem to have much greater visibility, but our experience has told us that Hand injuries often contribute to the most surgeries per team/per season and can result in significant man-game loss of service. In my 30 years as a Consultant, Team Physician and/or Medical Director in all 4 major North American-based Leagues (as well as for "itinerant" independent contractor sports of golf, tennis, and motorsports), we have cared for well over 2000 athletes...

Interest in use of perinatal allogenic tissues including clinical-grade minimally manipulated umbilical cord tissue-derived allograft formulations to treat knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients is increasing. Limited studies have characterized these formulations and evaluated their safety and efficacy in knee OA patients. We developed such formulation and reported the presence of growth factors, cytokines, hyaluronic acid, and exosomes. We reported that its administration is safe, and resulted in 50% pain reduction and improvement in knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score (over 10%) and 36-item short form survey (25%)...
