Alzheimer's disease (AD) is complex and multifactorial, and its pathogenesis involves multiple factors and processes. This study pioneered the in situ growth of cerium oxide nanoparticles on macrophage membranes (Ce-RAW). Further, carbon quantum dots (CQD) were biomimetically modified by Ce-RAW, leading to the synthesis of a multifunctional nanocomposite (CQD-Ce-RAW). Within the framework of this research, CQD-Ce-RAW was strategically combined with photothermal therapy (PTT), aiming to achieve a more significant therapeutic effect...

We demonstrate light-triggered dynamic covalent assembly of a linear short tetrapeptide containing two terminal cysteine residues in an AND logic manner. A photobase generator is introduced to accomplish light-mediated pH regulation to increase the reduction potential of thiols in the tetrapeptide, which activates its oxidative polymerization through disulfide bonds. Interestingly, it is elucidated that under light irradiation, mere co-existence of photobase generator and the oxidizing agent permits the polymerization performance of this tetrapeptide...

A promising therapeutic strategy in cancer treatment merges photodynamic therapy (PDT) induced apoptosis with ferroptosis, a form of programmed cell death governed by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. Given the pivotal role of mitochondria in ferroptosis, the development of photosensitizers that specifically provoke mitochondrial dysfunction and consequentially trigger ferroptosis via PDT is of significant interest. To this end, we have designed and synthesized a novel nanoparticle, termed FECTPN, tailored to address this requisite...

A novel core-shell with a tetradecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride-modified montmorillonite (TDMBA/MMT) interlayer silk fibroin (SF)/poly(lactic acid) (PLLA) nanofibrous membrane was fabricated using a simple conventional electrospinning method. Scanning electron microscopy and pore size analyses revealed that this core-shell with TDMBA/MMT interlayer maintained its nanofibrous morphology and larger pore structure more successfully than SF/PLLA nanofibrous membranes after treatment with 75% ethanol vapor...

Growing demand for highly effective, site-specific delivery of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals using nano-sized carriers has prompted increased scrutiny of carrier biocompatibility and biodegradability. To address these concerns, biodegradable natural polymers have emerged as a transformative domain, offering non-toxic, precisely targetable carriers capable of finely modulating cargo pharmacokinetics while generating innocuous decomposition by-products. This comprehensive review illuminates the emergence of polysaccharide-based nanoparticulate drug delivery systems...

Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCD) were synthesized using a simple and fast hydrothermal route, employing citric acid and urea as precursors. The resulting NCDs were non-covalently functionalized (conjugated) with aromatic amino acids, namely phenylalanine (Phe) and tryptophan (Trp). Atomic force microscopy revealed that the NCDs exhibit a disk-like morphology with an average diameter of approximately 60 nm and an average height of about 0.5 nm. Following conjugation, the particle height increased to around 3 nm...

Benzalkonium chloride (BAK) is the most commonly-used preservative in topical ophthalmic medications that may cause ocular surface inflammation associated with oxidative stress and dry eye syndrome. Glutathione (GSH) is an antioxidant in human tears and able to decrease the proinflammatory cytokine release from cells and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), a hydrophilic polymer, is one of most commonly used artificial tears and can promote the corneal epithelial cell adhesion, migration and re-epithelialization...

Using N-acryloyl amino acids (valine, valine methyl ester, aspartic acid, serine) as monomers, four kinds of amphiphilic PAAs were synthesized via photoinduced electron/energy transfer-reversible addition fragmentation chain-transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization and were further assembled into nano-sized delivery systems...

In the field of orthopedics, it's crucial to effectively slow down the degradation rate of Mg alloys. This study aims to improve the degradation behavior of Mg-Zn-Ca alloys by electrodepositing fluorohydroxyapatite (FHA). We investigated the microstructure and bond strength of the deposition, as well as degradation and cellular reactions. After 15-30 days of degradation in Hanks solution, FHA deposited alloys showed enhanced stability and less pH change. The strong interfacial bond between FHA and the Mg-Zn-Ca substrate was verified through scratch tests (Critical loads: 10...

Elucidation on the emulsifying behaviors of goose liver protein (GLP) from interfacial perspective was scarce when protein charging was altered. This work aimed to elucidate the role of phosphorylation on the interfacial associative interaction and then emulsion stabilizing properties of GLP using three structurally relevant phosphates of sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) and sodium pyrophosphate (TSPP). A monotonic increment of protein charging treated from STMP, STPP to TSPP caused progressively increased particle de-aggregation, surface hydrophobicity and structural flexibility of GLP...

Melanoma is responsible for more than 80% of deaths related to skin diseases. Ibrutinib (IBR), a Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor, has been proposed to treat this type of tumor. Antibiotic resistance has become an urgent threat to health care in recent years. The use of drug delivery systems provides advantages over conventional administration of antibiotics and can slow the development of antibiotic resistance. In the current study, we developed a toxin-triggered liposomal antibiotic delivery system, in which the drug release is enabled by the leukotoxin (LtxA) produced by the Gram-negative pathogen, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. LtxA has previously been shown to mediate membrane disruption by promoting a lipid phase change in nonlamellar lipids, such as 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-methyl (N-methyl-DOPE)...
