PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate the biological activity and antibacterial property of cerium oxide-incorporated calcium silicate coatings (CeO2-CS) in dental implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, MC3T3-E1 cells cultured on the plastic, Ti-6Al-4V, and the cerium oxide-incorporated calcium silicate coatings (CeO2-CS) coating served as the blank, control, and CeO2-CS groups, respectively. A cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and flow cytometry were used to evaluate the biocompatibility...

OBJECTIVES: To compare the histomorphometric outcomes of biopsies collected from the antrostomy and from the alveolar crest of the maxillary sinus after a sinus-lift procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 12 volunteers, sinus floor elevation was performed using collagenated corticocancellous porcine bone. Nine months after the surgery, 2 biopsies, 1 from the alveolar crest and 1 from the antrostomy, were collected for histological analysis. RESULTS: Biopsies from 11 patients were available for histological analyses (n = 11)...

INTRODUCTION: In the past 10 years, long-term studies have demonstrated that guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a successful and reliable technique for vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation, but strict and rigorous protocols must be adopted. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Because no reports have yet been published with statements and clinical recommendations for GBR, a closed meeting of all authors was organized to discuss this matter during a GBR symposium held in Bologna (Italy) in October 2016...

INTRODUCTION: Steam heat sterilization could be one of the factors that affects the dimensional accuracy of surgical guides, leading to an error during guided implant surgery. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of steam heat sterilization on the dimensional changes of surgical guides. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 27 surgical guides, which were made by either Formlabs printer (Formlabs Inc., Somerville, MA) or Simplant (DENTSPLY Implants NV, Hasselt, Belgium), were scanned using an intraoral scanner before and after sterilization...

OBJECTIVE: In the mandibular posterior region, presurgical imaging can provide valuable information of anatomical variants. The aim of this study is to evaluate submandibular fossa anatomy in the posterior mandible using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred thirty-two preimplant CBCT examinations were used. Several morphometric measurements were performed in the submandibular fossa. Moreover, each patient was classified according to the Kennedy classification...

INTRODUCTION: Osseodensification preserves bone bulk, facilitates compaction autografting, and deforms trabecular bone in an outward strain, which result in alveolar ridge plastic expansion. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate ridge expansion after osseodensification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients treated with implant placement through osseodensification were evaluated. The alveolar ridge width was measured at the level of the crest and 10 mm apical to the crest before and after osseodensification...

An upper/lower overdenture case, which presented with clinical entities commonly associated with the combination syndrome, is described. To the author's knowledge, this is the first documented case to illustrate such a particular association. The patient presented with an upper overdenture on 4 individual implants with attachments, without palatal coverage, opposing a lower bar overdenture on 4 implants, delivered more than 10 years before presentation. The patient complained about esthetics (poor display of upper teeth, excessive showing of lower teeth, and occlusal plane cant) and chewing...

PURPOSE: The aggressive juvenile ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous neoplasm that affects the jaws of young patients. The treatment can range from careful curettage to complete bone resection. Early dental rehabilitation through osseointegrated implants is indicated for functional recovery and esthetics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article reports the case of a 20-year-old man submitted to osseous resection, installation of a titanium plate associated with bone graft and osteogenic substances with subsequent installation of osseointegrated dental implants...

INTRODUCTION: Implant osseointegration is strongly influenced by the bone quality at the implant insertion site. The present work aims to create distribution diagrams showing the average bone density at each position within the jaws. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected from 4 oral surgeons who sought bone-density measurements during implant placement using a torque-measuring implant micromotor. Statistical analyses were performed to investigate whether bone density correlated with the patients' sex and age and whether the bone-density values at different positions within each arch correlated to each other...

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten patients were selected, and after a minimally invasive extraction of the teeth (T0), a cone beam computed tomography was performed (T1). Seven days after extraction, Puros cancellous particulate homologous graft was inserted into the elected sites together with a membrane (T2). After 4 months, a cone beam computed tomography of the sites was performed (T3)...

The purpose of this study was to assess clinically and radiographically efficacy of maxillary sinus augmentation using hydraulic pressure in a lateral approach with immediate implant placement. In a total of 10 patients having less than 4 to 6 mm of subantral bone height, lateral approach sinus membrane elevation procedure was performed using hydraulic pressure with the help of a specialized water lift kit followed by grafting and simultaneous implant placement. Cone beam computed tomography analysis was used to assess the change in subantral bone height from baseline to the 6 months postoperatively...

BACKGROUND: During implantation planning, dentists should be able to make an informed decision regarding whether to use an implant template to assist the surgery. PURPOSE: The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the results of implantation with or without an implant template based on the accuracy, survival rate, and other considerations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In January 2018, a systematic review was undertaken for randomized controlled trials and retrospective and prospective cohort studies with relevance to implant accuracy and the survival rate between the implant template and free-hand method...

We have encountered a rare case in which the subject underwent maxillary sinus floor elevation at another hospital, and a screw to fix the grafted bone substitute was forced into the maxillary sinus and intruded into the bone. Various different foreign bodies have been reported as being forced into the maxillary sinus due to dental treatment, and these foreign bodies are often retained on the maxillary sinus mucous membrane. However, no reports have described a screw forced in and intruded into the peculiar position in the bone, as seen in the present case, which we report here with additional discussion...

INTRODUCTION: Osseodensification is a technique that aims at bone preservation and compaction either through nonsubtractive drilling or implants with a special thread design. This can increase quantity and density of periimplant bone. This review represents a summary and a critical appraisal of the studies regarding osseodensification in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three databases were searched: PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Library, and Latin American and Caribbean center on health sciences information (LILACS)...
