Simvastatin (SIM) is a widely used anticholesterolemic drug that blocks the biosynthesis of cholesterol. However, SIM also has pleiotropic effects on 3-hydroxy-3-methyglutary-CoA reductase (HMGR), cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), and lipoprotein lipase (LPL), which are important genes in the cholesterol biosynthesis and transport processes. We investigated the effects of different concentrations of SIM on the mRNA expression of these genes in bovine intramuscular and subcutaneous adipocytes from the longissimus dorsi muscle and subcutaneous fat tissues of Luxi Yellow cattle...

MiRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. SNPs in miRNA genes may lead to phenotypic variation by altering miRNA expression and their targets. In this study, miR-1704 expression profiles in nine tissues at 1 d, 6 weeks and 16 weeks old Gushi chickens were detected. MiR-1704 was widely expressed in the detection of tissues. The expression in 1 d and 6 weeks old was low abundance, while its expression at 16 weeks was very high. An rs14668705 (C > G) SNP was detected within the pre-miR-1704 in an F2 resource population of Gushi chicken crossed with Anka broiler...

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a re-emerging mosquito-borne zoonotic flaviviral disease. Swine sero-convert 2-3 weeks before infection occurs in humans and thus serves as a suitable sentinel for JE surveillance and outbreak prediction in human population. The present study was conducted with the objective of developing a lateral flow assay (LFA) for detecting JEV antibodies in swine sera. Three different formats were tried using recombinant NS1 protein as antigen in order to select the best format. In format I, gold nanoparticles were conjugated with antigen followed by spotting of antigen on NCM as test line and anti-antigen IgG on NCM as control line...

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) plays an important role in reproduction by inhibiting the expression of gonadotropins in birds and mammals, but in fishes, it is ambiguous. In this study, we cloned 606 bp long cDNA of GnIH from Catla catla brain (cGnIH). The encoded preproGnIH peptide generated three putative peptides (cGnIH-I, -II, -III) of different size. Phylogenetic analysis of GnIH showed clustering of different peptide sequence with its orthologs in separate clades. The real-time PCR analysis showed the expression of cGnIH in brain, gonads, intestine, stomach, heart, gill and liver with the highest expression in the brain and gonads of both sexes...

In humans, the dysfunction of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene causes hereditary familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). The severity of polyposis varies between individuals, but genetic basis for this is in large part unknown. This variability also occurs in our porcine model of FAP, based on an APC1311 mutation (orthologous to human APC1309 ). Since loss of TAP1 function can lead to CRC in humans, we searched for germline polymorphisms in APC1311/+ pigs with low (LP) and high (HP) levels of polyposis, as well as in wild-type pigs representing six breeds and a commercial line...

The dietary requirement for cysteine is not determined in poultry since it is not an essential amino acid. The cysteine need is expected to be met through the transsulfuration pathway where homocysteine, a precursor of methionine, is converted to cysteine. Cysteine is a major component of plumage, and the degree to which cysteine is involved in plumage and other keratized proteins are unknown. We randomly assigned chicks to control and treatment (deficient in cysteine) diets for 49 d. The thickness of the skin layers, feather follicle length, and thickness were measured at days 10, 24, 34, and 49...
