The incidence of obesity and obesity-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is increasing worldwide, which threatens quality of life and human health. "The toxins in the stool enter the body and blood and then cause a variety of diseases"; this quote illustrates that the Chinese ancients recognized the negative effects of harmful intestinal metabolites on the body. As the largest microecosystem in the human body, intestinal microbiota and their metabolites affect the nutrition, metabolism, and immune function of the host, which is an important pathogenic factor in obesity and obesity-related diseases...

Despite the plethora of treatments available for patients with fibromyalgia, there is insufficient evidence to date as to what the ideal treatment approach is. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of a home program of audio-recorded guided imagery relaxation on people with fibromyalgia. This experimental 8-week longitudinal trial design was undertaken with 60 people diagnosed with fibromyalgia who were randomly assigned to either a guided imagery intervention group or a control group. Pain at tender points, anxiety, self-efficacy, quality of sleep, quality of life, and the impact of the fibromyalgia were determined at baseline, at 4 weeks, and at 8 weeks...

Nursing programs are stressful learning environments, and students are expected to maintain high academic performance to successfully graduate. Cognitive test anxiety has been minimally studied among nursing students, including how to successfully manage. The Cognitive Test Anxiety Scale (CTAS) was administered to 31 students before and after a high-stakes nursing examination. The intervention was inhaled lemon essential oil delivered via a personal nasal device. Neither the control nor the experimental group demonstrated a statistically significant change in the CTAS score from pretest to posttest (P = ...

As a practice, nursing centers on patients' bodies and how they live the experience of illness and disability through their bodies (embodiment). International nursing studies conducted on the topic of body care primarily include theoretical studies, whereas empirical studies remain sparse. The aim of this study was to describe nurses' perceptions of the role of their bodies and the bodies of patients during body care. Mind-body exercises such as yoga offer patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) a symptom management strategy for improving physical and mental health. Studies have evaluated yoga to manage symptoms of RA and improve physical function; however, none has examined the relationship between yoga and work status in adults with RA. The objective was to describe differences in RA symptomatology, physical function scores, and work status between adults with RA who participate in yoga and those who do not. This cross-sectional study surveyed adults with rheumatologist-diagnosed RA regarding yoga use in the past year, symptoms, physical function, and work status...

China has more than 300 million cigarette smokers and 1 million deaths every year attributed to smoking. Despite its huge economic implications, the lack of smoking and associated lifestyle-related data on China's outpatients makes it difficult for health care professionals to provide individualized assessments and targeted interventions. This study aimed to identify factors to inform nurse-led smoking behavioral assessments and cessation interventions. Clinical data from new patients attending the family medicine outpatient department from a large tertiary hospital in a major Southern China city were collected between March and December 2015...

The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of Iranian family caregivers with regard to the burden of caregiving. This is in the context of illuminating and identifying the experiences of family members from different contextual perspectives. In this qualitative study, purposive sampling was conducted in 2016. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and were analyzed using content analysis. Data analysis identified 4 categories and 8 subcategories: (1) burnout (physical problems and psychoemotional stress), (2) role conflict (balancing caring roles and family responsibilities; failure in professional or educational roles), (3) health system tensions (inadequate support from health professionals; ignorance of family members in health structure), and (4) social challenges of cancer (economic burden; taboo of cancer)...

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal motor neuron disease that occurs in 4 among 100 000 people in the United States. Individuals with ALS gradually lose their ability to control voluntary muscles, diminishing their ability to communicate. A comprehensive multidatabase search retrieved 31 qualitative research articles that addressed persons with end-of-life experiences with ALS. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied and a critical appraisal was applied for the final 8 included articles. First-person data extraction from the final articles represented emergence of 3 themes significant to persons with ALS: decisions for life-sustaining support, coping and fear of what is to come, and communication with providers...
