OBJECTIVES: Delta C-peptide derived by the glucagon stimulation test is a reliable value for the evaluation of the pancreatic endocrine function after pancreas transplantation. We examined the associations between delta C-peptide as pancreatic graft endocrine function and donor background factors. METHODS: Sixty-five cases of pancreatic transplantation from brain-dead donors, which were performed in our facility, were enrolled in this study. Enrolled recipients underwent a glucagon stimulation test within 1 to 3 months after transplantation to evaluate the pancreatic graft endocrine function with delta C-peptide to compare donor background factors...

OBJECTIVES: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is characterized by abdominal pain, recurrent hospitalizations, frequent exposure to antibiotics, nutritional deficiencies, and chronic opioid use. Data describing the gut microbial community structure of patients with CP is limited. We aimed to compare gut microbiota of a group of patients with severe CP being considered for total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) with those of healthy controls and to associate these differences with severity of clinical symptoms...

OBJECTIVES: Thrombotic complications after total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) are common. However, the systemic changes to coagulation in the perioperative period have not been well studied. Our objective was to evaluate the derangements in coagulation in the perioperative period for this procedure. METHODS: This was a prospective observational study of patients undergoing elective TPIAT for chronic pancreatitis. Multiple methods of evaluating coagulation, including 2 viscoelastic assays and standard laboratory assays were obtained at defined intraoperative and postoperative intervals...

OBJECTIVES: Some intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) have malignant potential and can become pancreatic cancer. The mechanism behind the malignant progression of IPMN remains unknown. We aimed to identify the risk factors and interactions between backgrounds for IPMN. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 980 patients of pancreatic cancer or suspected IPMN (sIPMN) who underwent endoscopic ultrasound or retrograde cholangiopancreatography. We classified them into pancreatic cancer, high-risk sIPMN, and low-risk sIPMN, and investigated the risk factors for high-risk sIPMN...

OBJECTIVES: Physicians are increasingly recommending neoadjuvant therapy (NT) before surgery for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, patient preferences for and opinions regarding NT are poorly understood. METHODS: Survivors and caregivers from a national PDAC patient advocacy organization completed an online survey assessing preferences for NT versus surgery first (SF) and factors influencing their decision making. RESULTS: Among 54 participants, 74...

OBJECTIVES: Pharmacological ascorbate (P-AscH-, high-dose, intravenous vitamin C) has shown promise as an adjuvant therapy for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) treatment. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of P-AscH- when combined with PDAC chemotherapies. METHODS: Clonogenic survival, combination indices, and DNA damage were determined in human PDAC cell lines treated with P-AscH- in combination with 5-fluorouracil, paclitaxel, or FOLFIRINOX (combination of leucovorin, 5-fluorouracil, irinotecan, oxaliplatin)...

We report a father and his daughter who both had multiple somatostatinomas in the duodenal bulb without a known syndrome. The father, at age 68 years, was incidentally found to harbor 4 approximately 1.5-cm well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors in the duodenal bulb. His preoperative somatostatin level was elevated. He underwent partial duodenectomy and regional lymph node dissection; one lymph node was positive for metastasis. One year postoperatively, a recurrence was found in the surgical bed; he was treated with octreotide for 2 years, which stabilized the recurrent tumor...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether angiotensin (Ang)-(1-7)-mediated restoration of pancreatic microcirculation profiles and endothelial injury is associated with the expression of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT). METHODS: Wild-type, TERT transgene, and TERT knockdown mice were used in this study, and acute pancreatitis model was induced by intraperitoneal injection of cerulein and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Pancreatitis was confirmed by histopathology and serum amylase levels...

OBJECTIVES: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), as the most frequent pancreatic tumor, featuring high death rate. The current study intends to explore the biological role of PSMA3 antisense RNA 1 (PSMA3-AS1) and its mechanism underlying PDAC progression. METHODS: Expression analyses were conducted using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Proliferative, apoptotic, migratory, and invasive capacities were determined by functional assays, encompassing 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine, colony formation, JC-1, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling, and transwell assays in PDAC cells...

OBJECTIVES: Early detection of cystic fibrosis (CF) related diabetes (CFRD) improves health outcomes and reduces CF-related mortality. The study aims to evaluate the ratio of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) to C-peptide in CF patients with diabetes and without diabetes. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis was carried out in a prospective cohort of 33 participants (CF [n = 16] and CFRD [n = 18]). We examined the association of plasma IAPP:C-peptide ratio with clinical information, including glycated hemoglobin, and lung function markers...

OBJECTIVES: Pancreatic cancer (PC) has been related directly to many risk factors; however, diet is considered one of the most modifiable risk factors. This study is designed to observe the associations between the intake of macromicronutrients and the risk of pancreatic cancer in a Jordanian population. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the utility of serum chromogranin A (CgA) along the clinical pathway of patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records was conducted of patients with NET who had at least 1 measurement of CgA between January 2015 and April 2021 at a large metropolitan Australian hospital. Chromogranin A was classified as increased or decreased if there was at least a 25% change in sequential levels and was compared with disease response by anatomical or functional imaging if within 6 weeks (considered concurrent)...

OBJECTIVES: To date, the complete natural history of pancreatic steatosis is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the association of fatty pancreas (FP) in the incidence of metabolic syndrome and its components among Chinese patients with a 5-year follow-up. METHODS: Three independent cross-sectional surveys were carried out in 2013, 2015, and 2018. Fatty pancreas was diagnosed via transabdominal sonography.
