Background: Deep diaphragmatic breathing (DDB) involves slow and fully contraction of the diaphragm with expansion of the belly during inhalation, and slow and fully contraction of the abdominal muscles with reduction of the belly during exhalation. It is the key component of the holistic mind-body exercises commonly used for patients with multimorbidity. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to re-visit and address the fundamental anatomical and biomechanical consideration of the DDB with the relevant literature...

The purpose of the study is to determine whether administering healing touch (HT) is more effective than deep breathing (DB) for reducing acute care nurses' stress during a shift. A randomized cluster trial assessed 150 nurses' vital signs and Visual Analog Scale for Stress (VASS) levels pre, post, and at follow-up to achieve a power of .7 and medium affect size. Open-ended questions following the intervention enriched quantitative findings describing the experience, facilitators, and barriers to potential use in nursing...

This paper presents a middle-range theory of storytelling in nursing education. Both explanatory and predictive, the theory further develops the existing conceptual work on the topic of storytelling. It places storytelling as a pedagogical technique within the realm of holistic nursing theory and philosophy. Storytelling is seen as a manifestation of the process of integral interconnectedness. The theory suggests a mechanism by which storytelling, as mediated by narrative transportation and neuroplasticity, can be effective in promoting desirable outcomes for holistic nursing students, including the achievement of affective and cognitive educational objectives...

Design: Explanatory sequential mixed methods case study research. Methods: 5 care partnerships (10 participants) received online MBI, and data was collected in weeks 0, 4, and 8. Data collection involved the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale, the Mutuality Scale, the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, and post-intervention interviews...

Within the South African context, the nursing profession comprises different nursing cadres. The enrolled nurse is considered a sub-category of nursing and therefore does not carry the title of 'professional' as in a professional nurse. The purpose of the study was to develop, describe, implement, and evaluate a model for the facilitation of self-awareness for the professionalism of enrolled nurses at a specific nursing agency in Gauteng. A theory generating, qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design was used and was conducted following Chinn and Kramer's four stages of model development...

Treatments for addressing psychiatric mental health issues in vulnerable patients with cancer are established. Yet, many patients persist with unrelenting psychological difficulties despite intervention. There is growing interest in the role of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for managing treatment-resistant mental health challenges in patients with cancer. Psilocybin is a naturally occurring compound derived from certain mushroom species that can induce entheogenic experiences or an altered state of consciousness...

Nursing care historically has not been separated from institutional care costs. Organizations seek to quantify nursing care with no assignation of the value or uniqueness of the individual patient-nurse encounter. New models point to measuring care at this level. Nursing care encompasses tangible evidence that can be easy to quantify but, in the paradigm of healing and caring, and more specifically within the knowledge pool of holistic nursing, significant contributions are intangible and thus hard to measure...

Sexuality is an important component of holistic quality of life, and myocardial infarction (MI) negatively influences many aspects of sexuality, including sexual function. However, there is limited literature that examines sexuality beyond the most basic physical components. This pilot study aimed to describe the relationships between the physical, psychologic, and social domains of holistic sexuality at an early timepoint post-MI. Adult men post-MI were mailed self-report surveys at 2 weeks post discharge...

The experience of a radical remission from a terminal diagnosis is essentially life altering. The purpose of this self-report is to provide a basis for understanding this event and to provide practitioners a guide for supporting patients during the transition process. A conceptual model is presented that outlines the structure and changes that are influenced during the transition process.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed nurses to more stress and inability to practice self-care activities. These have resulted in conditions that threaten their health, well-being, and ability to work. Nurses' lack of self-care can predispose them to chronic health conditions and staff burnout which may adversely affect patient care. The panacea for this concern is a deliberate effort to promote holistic health and wellbeing through self-care activities targeted towards physical, mental, social and spiritual aspects of nurses...
