Demonstrating value is essential to the future success of healthcare organizations. Health systems that disrupt traditional delivery models and meet consumer demands will lead the way. However, value depends on understanding the true cost of care. Until now, determining the total cost of care has not been addressed for three primary reasons: (1) tackling such a herculean effort was not necessary; (2) a lack of effective coding, accounting, and billing tools connected to clinical systems made it next to impossible; and (3) consumers did not pay as much for their healthcare as they do now...

Healthcare consumerism, costs, and price transparency are garnering unprecedented attention from hospitals and health systems in the United States. To many observers of the US healthcare delivery system, the inability to provide accurate pricing information and the variability in prices for comparable services are utter failures of the administrative infrastructure that supports patient care processes.Price transparency and the affordability of healthcare have also become top concerns for professional and trade organizations, which are devoting significant resources to assist member institutions in facing these issues...

Recent and rapid advances in the implementation of technology have greatly affected the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery in the United States. Simultaneously, diverse generational pressures-including the consumerism of millennials and unsustainable growth in the costs of care for baby boomers-have accelerated a revolution in healthcare delivery that was marked in 2010 by the passage of the Affordable Care Act.Against this backdrop, Maryland and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services entered into a partnership in 2014 to modernize the Maryland All-Payer Model...

Technology for technology's sake is never a good idea. There must be a purpose behind it. It must help us do our jobs better. Technology allows healthcare to remain affordable and, as such, accessible. Technology must increase access to care, improve safety, make test results more reliable, and help teams communicate better for a seamless care experience.Avera Health, a health system based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, comprises 330 facilities in 100 communities in five states. Sponsored by the Benedictine and Presentation Sisters, Avera is a healthcare ministry whose employees deliver high-quality care with compassion...

The science of motivation can help explain some of the root causes driving clinician burnout, a critical vulnerability in healthcare today. Research finds autonomy, mastery, and purpose to be drivers of intrinsic motivation, and healthcare leaders can use these three principles in program design and communication strategies to make progress toward rediscovering joy and passion in the life-giving work of healthcare. Leaders can achieve a competitive advantage for their organizations by applying these inherent motivators to attract, develop, and retain engaged and purposeful caregivers and by developing participative leadership to nurture a passion for caregiving...
