Pneumonia remains the top most killer of under-five Indian children. Pneumonia in children is usually caused by viral or bacterial infections. However, there are some unusual causes of pneumonia that merit consideration when pneumonia is recurrent or persistent.

Airway mucormycosis is a fatal opportunistic infection typically seen in immunocompromised individuals. In this case report, we present an unusual instance of tracheal stenosis in a patient with diabetes mellitus who had recently recovered from coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). Our patient was a 69-year-old male with poorly controlled type-II diabetes mellitus, on oral hypoglycemic agents, who had successfully completed treatment for COVID-19. Approximately one month later, he developed a cough, fever and breathlessness...

Pulmonary hydatid cyst is known to occur, but incidental detection of Aspergillus colonisation in an unruptured cyst wall, especially in immunocompetent patients, is very rare. Presentation can be hemoptysis or asymptomatic, depending upon immune status. Colonisation of the cyst wall may be due to immune dysregulation, structural abnormalities, invasion of fungal organisms through channels between airways and cyst and other mechanisms. Here, we report a rare case of Aspergillus colonisation in the hydatid cyst wall in a young immunocompetent patient and also try to describe the pathogenetic mechanism for the same...

Antiviral combinations have been proposed as treatment for influenza in order to increase the antiviral activity by action at different sites of action as well as obviate the emergence of drug resistance to the commonly used antiviral agents like oseltamivir. Nitazoxanide has been found to exhibit anti-influenza viral activity with clinical benefit in a previous study. We recruited 242 cases of SARI, among whon 67 were confirmed to have influenza viral infection. In a randomized blinded fashion, 34 patients received a combination of nitazoxanide and oseltamivir whereas 33 cases received oseltamivir alone...

The persistent morbidity and mortality associated with tuberculosis (TB), despite our continued efforts, has been long recognized, and the rise in the incidence of drug-resistant TB adds to the preexisting concern. The bulk of the TB burden is confined to low-income countries, and rigorous efforts are made to detect, notify, and systematically treat TB. Efforts have been infused with renewed vigor and determination by the World Health Organization (WHO) to eliminate tuberculosis in the near future. Different health agencies worldwide are harvesting all possible strategies apart from consolidating ongoing practices, including prevention of the development of active disease by treating latent TB infection (LTBI)...

BACKGROUND: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a serious global health concern. The severity of the disease can be determined by serologic indicators such as C-reactive protein, lactate dehydrogenase, D-dimer, ferritin, and interleukin-6. (IL-6). Patients with preexisting conditions such as respiratory, cardiovascular, and pulmonary disease could be at risk of adverse outcomes. It is crucial to provide adequate medical care to manage these patients and increase their chances of survival...

AIM: To determine the bacteriological conversion rate after 6 months of Delamanid (DLM) based treatment in children with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) and determine factors associated with bacteriological conversion. METHODS: This is a descriptive retrospective study done in children between the age of 6-17 years with DR-TB who received DLM-based therapy from October 2018 to May 2021. The drug resistance pattern of TB was detected using Xpert RIF/MTB and phenotypic drug sensitivity testing (DST) on TB-MGIT culture reports...

BACKGROUND: The presence of perinatal asphyxia and its severity appear to correlate with increasing incidence of Acute kidney injury (AKI). The objective of this study is to determine the frequency of AKI and its outcome in birth asphyxia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Pediatric Medicine from March 2019 to September 2019. A total of 111 newborns with birth asphyxia of gestational age 37-41 weeks were included. Neonates born to mothers having hypertension and diabetes mellitus, patients with congenital kidney anomalies like polycystic kidney disease and renal agenesis, and mothers taking nephrotoxic drugs or any other known cause of AKI like hypovolemic shock were excluded...

CONTEXT: Obstructive sleep apnoea is less known and lesser practised in dentistry. Dentists often struggle to educate, diagnose or offer treatment to the patient. Hence, the disorder of the patient and the opportunity for the dentist both go unnoticed. AIM: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding aspects of obstructive sleep apnoea among dental practitioners, faculty and interns in India. METHODS AND MATERIAL: A self-constructed validated questionnaire was prepared and circulated online among dental interns and professionals in India...

BACKGROUND: Frailty represents a state of risk in which a relatively small stressor results in a disproportionate decline in health status. This study aims to determine the prevalence of frailty among patients with COPD in the Indian population and its associated risk factors. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 150 COPD patients. Frailty was assessed using the frailty phenotype method. RESULTS: The mean age (SD) of the study population was 60...

INTRODUCTION: More patients are developing second primary lung cancer (SPLC). This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the extent of SPLC resection on outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 1,895 patients with lung cancer who underwent pulmonary resection from 2011 to 2018. SPLC was diagnosed using the criteria of Martini and Melamed. Patients with pathological stage I SPLC who underwent lobectomy for first primary lung cancer (FPLC) were included in the study...

BACKGROUND: The current morphological condition of an individual is described by a somatotype, which is a three-number scale. The endomorph, mesomorph and ectomorph components are presented in the same sequence, and each number corresponds to one of the three basic components of body composition. METHODS: We recruited 50 healthy male subjects with a mean age of 24.10 ± 4.55 yrs. Somatotype was determined by the Heath and Carter method. Impulse oscillometry was performed followed by spirometry according to the European Respiratory Society (ERS) or American Thoracic Society (ATS) guidelines...
