A disintegrin-like and metalloproteinase domain with thrombospondin-type 1 motifs (ADAMTS) protein superfamily includes 19 secreted metalloproteases. Proteolytic substrates of ADAMTS enzymes have been linked to female reproductive function. Herein, we aimed to investigate serum ADAMTS-1, -9 and -20 levels in women with and without endometrial polyps (EPs). The study group (n = 40) consisted of women who had hysteroscopically detected and histologically confirmed EPs whereas control group (n = 40) was recruited from those women without any endometrial pathology...

Excessive bleeding during and after caesarean section is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, especially in low resource countries. This study evaluates the effect of intrauterine misoprostol with oxytocin in comparison with oxytocin alone on blood loss during caesarean section. A retrospective data analysis of 160 women who underwent lower segment caesarean section was conducted. Eighty-five out of 160 (53%) women received tablet misoprostol 800 µg by intrauterine route after delivery of a baby in addition to routine oxytocin infusion (group A), while 75 women (47%) received only oxytocin (group B)...

The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of a new formula for the calculation of an estimated fetal weight (EFW) and to evaluate value of fetal visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and abdominal subcutaneous fat (SF) thickness on the prediction of birth weight. In this prospective study, fetal biometry, EFW, fetal VAT and SF thickness were measured in low-risk 37-41 gestational weeks pregnant women by ultrasonography. The linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between birth weight and obstetric measurements...

In this retrospective study, we aimed to investigate the contraceptive choices before and after voluntary termination of pregnancy among adolescents. Seventy pregnant adolescents aged 17-19 and undergone voluntary pregnancy termination were included. Counseling about contraceptives was given before the procedure. Contraceptive choices before and after termination of pregnancy were evaluated. Before pregnancy termination, all of the adolescents reported the use of a contraceptive method. The most commonly used method was coitus interruptus (37...

The study objective was to evaluate the effect of the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) initiative, as implemented in a southwestern U.S. tertiary hospital, on associated patient costs and outcomes. Using a quasi-experimental study design, we collected existing data (cost and patient outcomes) comparing two six-month period at the baseline and one-year follow-up. Following descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests and t-tests were used to compare categorical and continuous variables, respectively...

Here, we aimed to investigate the predominance of cervicitis agents with minimal testing rates among asymptomatic students in a Tertiary Institution and its associated risk factors. Endocervical swabs were collected from randomly selected 133 female students (15-34 years of age) in Benin City, Nigeria and screened for six genital pathogens (Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma hominis, M. genitalium, Ureaplasma urealyticum, U. parvum and Trichomonas vaginalis) using multiplex PCR. Out of the 133 subjects, 80 were positive for cervicitis with 46...

This study aims to investigate associations between glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), glycated albumin (GA) and fructosamine with neonatal birthweight in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The prospective cohort consisted of 82 women with GDM and their newborns, enrolled between November 2016 and September 2017. Considering neonatal birthweight and birthweights ≥90th percentile for gestational age as outcomes, linear and logistic regression models were used, respectively. Fructosamine (R2 =0.62) and GA (R2 =0...

The aims of this study were to determine prevalence of childbirth fear among uncomplicated pregnant women in Siriraj Hospital and possible associated factors. A total of 305 uncomplicated, singleton pregnant women were enrolled during early third trimester. All participants were interviewed regarding baseline demographic, social, economic, family, and obstetric characteristics. Fear of childbirth (FOC) was evaluated by Thai version of Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire Version A (W-DEQ). W-DEQ scores and level of FOC were compared between various characteristics to determine possible associated factors...

The aim of the study is to evaluate the feasibility of early postoperative bladder catheter removal without prior bladder-training exercises after laparoscopic nerve sparing radical hysterectomy (LNSRH). The post-operative bladder catheterisation period of 30 patients who underwent LNSRH at two institutes in Egypt and Italy were prospectively evaluated with postoperative drainage of the bladder through a Foley catheter for two days without performing bladder-training exercise. The median duration for postoperative bladder catheterisation was 3...

The objective of this prospective cohort study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided high-intensity focussed ultrasound (HIFU) in the treatment of uterine fibroids. Twenty premenopausal women with symptomatic fibroids underwent ultrasound-guided HIFU therapy. Twenty-two fibroids with a median baseline volume of 127.0 cm3 (range 18.5-481.2 cm3 ) were treated. The percentages fibroid volume reduction were 46.9 (range -8.8-73.1) at 1-month, 57.4 (-51.5-95.2) at 3-month, 60...

The definition of recurrent miscarriage ranges from two miscarriages according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, to three consecutive pregnancy losses as defined by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Recent guidelines emphasise the need for further research on the effect of various recurrent miscarriage definitions on diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Our study examines the management and pregnancy outcomes of nulliparous women attending Cork University Maternity Hospital's Pregnancy Loss Clinic, between 2009 and 2014, with their second consecutive first-trimester miscarriage...

A hysterectomy for enlarged uteri is considered a challenge for gynaecologic surgeons, due to the limit of exposure to surgical spaces. Our objective is to investigate the different variables that may have an impact on the risk of conversion to open surgery. This is a retrospective cohort study consisting of 133 women who were submitted to surgery for uterine fibroids and who underwent total hysterectomy by laparoscopic approach attempt. The median uterus weight was 622 grams (range 301-3882) and the median maximum diameter of the bigger fibroid was 74 mm (range 33-148)...

This is a cohort study which included 100 cases with pre-eclampsia (PE) and 100 controls, done to compare the antepartum and postpartum uterine artery (UtA) Doppler velocimetry between them. UtA PI and RI were measured before and within 48-72 h after delivery. There was a highly significant difference between the cases and controls, regarding the UtA RI (0.70 ± 0.10 and 0.72 ± 0.10, versus 0.59 ± 0.12 and 0.60 ± 0.11) and PI (1.41 ± 0.89 and 1.45 ± 0.90 versus 0.85 ± 0.30 and 0...
