PURPOSE: To investigate the comparative effect of allogeneic peripheral blood serum (allo-PBS) and cord blood serum (CBS) eye drops on the status of the corneal subbasal nerve plexus in patients with dry eye disease by using an automated analysis system of in vivo confocal microscopy images. METHODS: This prospective, randomized, double-blind study included 30 patients with severe dry eye disease assigned to receive allo-PBS (group 1) or CBS (group 2) eye drops 8 times a day for 30 days...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the safety of long-term storage and shipping of prestripped, prestained, and preloaded Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (pDMEK) grafts. METHODS: A total of 33 cadaveric corneas were prestripped, prestained, and preloaded using modified Jones tube injectors as pDMEK. The corneas were masked to groups that were prepared <9 hours (control), 48 hours, and 72 hours before unloading and analysis. The 48- and 72-hour tissues were shipped by airfreight on each day before arrival to simulate domestic and international shipping...

PURPOSE: We explored elevated central corneal thickness (CCT) in children with cataracts as possibly reflecting preexisting corneal malformation related to specific cataract morphology. METHODS: All children consecutively seen during the study periods who had cataracts and corneal pachymetry as part of their routine care were enrolled at academic centers in large cities of Canada and the United States. Study data collected included age, sex, CCT, and cataract morphology...

PURPOSE: To report the diagnosis, histological findings, and treatment of a patient who developed epithelial ingrowth after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). METHODS: We present the case of a type 2 diabetic 60-year-old man who underwent DMEK for Fuchs dystrophy. Two months after surgery, an epithelial ingrowth in the graft-host interface was suspected. After a 3-month follow-up period in which progressive and centrifugal growth of the epithelial cells in the interface was documented, penetrating keratoplasty (PK) was performed to remove all areas of epithelial ingrowth...

PURPOSE: To perform a systematic review of the international literature evaluating the risk factors, preventative steps, and treatments for perioperative corneal injuries for nonocular surgery. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews databases were searched on April 13, 2018. Two hundred four articles were identified with 16 meeting the inclusion criteria. All studies were evaluated for quality and level of evidence. Two types of studies were included...

PURPOSE: To describe the outcomes of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) performed by cornea fellows during their initial learning curve. METHODS: This prospective study included the first consecutive series of 53 DMEK surgeries performed by 14 corneal fellows at Sorocaba's Ophthalmological Hospital. Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity, endothelial cell density (ECD), and complications were evaluated. RESULTS: Of the eyes without ocular comorbidities and with complete visual acuity measurements, 97% of 33 eyes achieved a best spectacle-corrected visual acuity of ≥20/40 in 6 months...

PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristics of corneal biomechanics in Chinese preschool children with different refractive status. METHODS: Study participants were 108 Chinese children (216 eyes) aged 4 to 6 years with a spherical equivalent refraction between -9.00 and +9.00 diopters (D). Cycloplegic refraction was measured using an autorefractor, axial length using an IOL Master (Zeiss, Oberkochen, Germany), and corneal biomechanical metrics and corneal power using an ultra-high-speed camera (Corvis ST; Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) and Pentacam (Oculus; Menlo Park, CA)...

PURPOSE: To map the publication trends in and explore hotspots of keratoconus research. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis based on the Web of Science Core Collection was conducted to investigate the publication trends in research related to keratoconus. The records extracted were analyzed, and a knowledge map was constructed using VOSviewer v.1.6.10 to visualize the annual publication number, distribution of countries, international collaborations, author productivity, source journals, intellectual base, and research hotspots in the field of keratoconus...

PURPOSE: To compare 3-year iontophoretic transepithelial corneal cross-linking (I-ON CXL) outcomes with epithelium-off collagen cross-linking (epi-off CXL) in pediatric patients. METHODS: Forty eyes of 28 consecutive pediatric patients [mean age 14.3 ± 2.5 (SD) years; range, 9-18 years] with keratoconus were evaluated. Twenty eyes of 15 patients underwent I-ON and 20 eyes of 13 patients epi-off CXL. Mean corrected distance visual acuity, spherical equivalent, maximum keratometry (Kmax), posterior elevation of the thinnest point, and thickness of the thinnest point were evaluated...
