Postherpetic neuralgia is one of the most severe complications after herpes zoster infection. Patients who experience persistent pain despite conservative treatment may benefit from interventional therapies, such as spinal cord stimulation. We present the case of a patient with severe refractory postherpetic neuralgia in the right T8 to L1 distribution who responded effectively to spinal cord stimulation. After its implantation, the patient had improvements in pain intensity, pain-related interference, quality of life, and satisfaction, with a simultaneous reduction of previous medications...

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a chronic noncommunicable disease, defined by a body mass index over 30 kg/m2. Its impact is not restricted to its association with higher risks of mortality and morbidity from other noncommunicable diseases, but also with a decrease in quality of life (QoL). There are several tools to assess QoL, from generic health-related tools to obesity-related specific ones. However, to assess QoL in patients undergoing bariatric surgery, only the Bariatric Analysis and Reporting Outcome System was available, which presented some significant problems...

INTRODUCTION: Information about pan-genotypic treatments for hepatitis in Portugal is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of glecaprevir plus pibrentasvir (GLE/PIB) treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in real-world clinical practice. METHODS: An observational prospective study was implemented in six hospitals with 121 adult HCV patients who initiated treatment with GLE/PIB between October 2018 and April 2019, according to clinical practice...

Hansen's disease, commonly known as leprosy, is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Being rare in developed countries, it is an increasingly common imported disease due to the migratory flow from countries where it is endemic. We present the case of a 21-year-old man who went to the emergency department with complaints of additive polyarthralgia involving large joints, papules, and erythematous plaques on the limbs with bullae and central necrosis and fever with chills for one week. Skin biopsy was performed revealing neutrophilic infiltrate with perineural granulomas...

Gender dysphoria is socially more visible and discussed today, but still underdiagnosed. It refers to distress and/or impaired function caused by inconsistency between the sex assigned at birth and gender identification. Clinical manifestations are variable. Lack of training and investment in gender issues make the diagnosis and management in primary care complex, particularly in conservative and isolated communities, with poor access to information and specialized health services. We describe the diagnosis of gender dysphoria and use of a patient centered multidisciplinary and family approach in a 12-year-old rural born adolescent, assigned female at birth...

INTRODUCTION: Strategic communication plays a decisive role in public health planning and project implementation. However, Portuguese Local Public Health Units, which are responsible for community interventions, still lack guidance models, tools, specialized resources, and training in health communication. The aim of this study was to develop a conceptual model of strategic organizational communication for local public health services, in Portugal. METHODS: This study presents a conceptual model of strategic organizational communication for Local Public Health Units, which was developed through a three-round, modified Delphi online panel...

INTRODUCTION: Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammatory process of the pancreas with a high prevalence rate and varying degrees of severity that can be potentially life threatening. Much is still unknown about which mechanisms determine the course and severity of acute pancreatitis. The primary objective of this review is to identify the potential association between circulating B and T lymphocytes and the severity of acute pancreatitis. Subgroup analyses will be done according to the severity classification of the Revised Atlanta Classification System as well as according to the distinction between B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes and the severity of acute pancreatitis...
