Vera Clérigo, Ana Castro, Teresa Mourato, Conceição Gomes
Granulomatous pneumonitis is a rare complication of bacillus Calmette-Guerin immunotherapy following intravesical administration of bacillus Calmette-Guerin. The authors present an unusual case of a 67-year-old man who developed mild and non-specific symptoms, following intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin instillations. Examinations revealed features of miliary tuberculosis and granuloma suggestive of mycobacterial infection. Anti-tuberculosis treatment resulted in a remarkable improvement in his symptoms and gradually upgrading of radiological appearance...

The incidence of tuberculosis has been increasing worldwide. Contrarily, a recent decrease in Portugal has been reported. Cutaneous tuberculosis comprises a low percentage of all cases. We report a 70-year-old female with a 2-month-history of painful, nodular, suppurative lesions in the groin area, bilaterally. Previous history was remarkable for Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection and stage-IIIB cervical cancer. A skin biopsy, stained with periodic acid-Schiff and Fite's stain, polymerase chain reaction on purulent discharge and mycobacterial culture of the skin were performed, leading to the diagnosis of scrofuloderma...

REVIEW
Joana Roseira, Jaime Ramos
INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease activity is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Anti-tumor necrosis factor α therapy is often required to treat flares and to maintain disease remission. However, there are concerns regarding treatment with these agents during pregnancy, as they actively cross the placental barrier. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Studies regarding anti-tumor necrosis factor α therapy during pregnancy were identified from PubMed from 1958 to January 2018...

INTRODUCTION: The national protocol of genetic counselling and pre-symptomatic testing for late-onset neurological diseases began in Portugal in 1995. Initially, it was accessible only to adults at-risk for Machado-Joseph disease, but was later extended to other hereditary ataxias, to Huntington's disease and to familial amyloid polyneuropathy caused by Val30Met mutation at the transthyretin gene. The aim of this study was to describe the profile of the population seeking pre-symptomatic testing, while also reflecting on the experience of conducting the protocol of multidisciplinary sessions since 1996...

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, in which a diagnostic delay could reduce the available therapeutic options. Therefore, it is important to monitor the time to diagnosis and understand factors that may potentially reduce it. The objective of this study was to determine the time between the first symptoms and the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and which factors may contribute to a diagnostic delay. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cross-sectional multicenter study, with retrospective data analysis, conducted in five tertiary Portuguese hospitals...

INTRODUCTION: Functional foods are those that promote health and well-being and/or decrease the risk of certain chronic diseases. It is known that young people' knowledge about functional foods is low. The aim of this study is to assess the psychometric proprieties of the "Attitudes towards Functional Foods Scale" in a sample of adolescents and, based on that analysis, adapting the scale for its use among this population group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: After a pre-test, the scale was applied to 340 students attending the 3rd cycle of basic education in Terceira island (Azores, Portugal), whose ages ranged between 11 and 19 years (mean = 14...

INTRODUCTION: Given the increasing use of electronic devices, and the increasing number of complaints with its use, we intend to evaluate the prevalence of manifestations of dry eye and ocular fatigue in a population of individuals, who use the computer daily to perform all their professional tasks, as well as to correlate these complaints with the number of hours of digital use as well as their possible improvement with behavioural measures and use of tear drops. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 77 individuals (154 eyes) were evaluated on two separate days with a 1-month interval...
