Efficacious strategies can now prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child. However, transmission rates remain unacceptably high, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Understanding women's perinatal transitions can inform interventions to support adherence to preventive strategies. Therefore, we applied Transitions Theory in a longitudinal qualitative study to explore perinatal transitions among women living with HIV in western Kenya. We conducted in-depth interviews with 30 women living with HIV at 3 key time points and, using our findings, described the theory's concepts in terms of participants' experiences...

The aim of this article is to share theoretical and methodological reflections on a project on feminist epistemologies and health activism. Based on the analysis of 12 life stories and 1 group interview, an approach based on ethnographic fiction is proposed through the creation of a serial story in podcast format. This approach helps in generating emotions to facilitate understanding and awareness of the issues raised and in showing everyday practices as ways of constructing knowledge. It also avoids turning life stories into academic artifacts with little transformational capacity...

We sought to understand contemporary health beliefs and practices of the CHamorus of Guam in the context of their perceptions of historical trauma. Narrative analysis of 20 story-eliciting interviews with 10 CHamoru adults identified stories of health and illness and living in-betweenness, wherein participants described navigation between health practices of Traditional and Western cultures in the centuries-long involvement with the colonizing culture. Those connections pointed to a conceptual third-space, informed by Homi Bhabha, in which historical trauma and the in-betweenness of Traditional and Western health open new possibilities of what culturally safe health care might look like for CHamorus...

This article summarizes the current state of nurses' implicit bias and discusses the phenomenon from Levinas' face of the Other and ethics of belonging, Watson's human caring and unitary caring science, and Chinn's peace and power theory. Nurses' implicit bias is a global issue; the primary sources of nurses' implicit bias include race/ethnicity, sexuality, health conditions, age, mental health status, and substance use disorders. The current research stays at the descriptive level and addresses implicit bias at the individual level...

Clients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (LGBT+) may experience barriers in health care access and services. LGBT+ clients want a welcoming, inclusive, and affirming encounter with nurses and other health care providers. This concept analysis used a modified Walker and Avant method to clarify the concept of LGBT+ inclusive health care. Antecedents, attributes, and consequences of LGBT+ inclusive health care were identified from the literature. The results of this concept analysis of LGBT+ inclusive health care can inform future research, policy, education, and practice to address the health care needs of this population...

At a time when new and veteran nurses are fleeing the profession and the term resilience is as worn out as the workers it is meant to inspire, scholars and educators must excavate the intuitive and creative core of nursing. Science addresses facts but lacks language for nuance. This article asserts that nursing, which lags behind medicine in appreciating the value of its stories, must recognize the essential diversity the humanities bring to our understanding of the human condition. As workforce deficits, moral distress, and vicarious trauma proliferate, a consilience between the art and science of nursing and a reminder of their ability to potentiate one another are overdue...

Despite the high prevalence of ageism worldwide, it is still underestimated and unrecognized by many nurses. Concept clarification is required to delineate the meaning of the word "ageism" in nursing. The purpose of this concept analysis is to clearly define the concept of ageism relative to nursing discipline using the Walker and Avant method. Defining the concept of ageism will provide nurses with a better understanding of its causes and consequences. It will aid policy makers in developing policies and interventions to help decrease ageism in health care environments...

Asian family caregivers of older adults with dementia have stressful caregiving situations over long periods; they must become resilient to recover from adversity. Precision medicine is a new concept that has been routinely encountered in the literature for little more than a decade. With increasing use, it becomes crucial to understand the meaning of this concept as it is applied in various settings. An evolutionary concept analysis was conducted to develop an understanding of the essential features of precision medicine and its use. The analysis led to a comprehensive list of the antecedents, attributes, and consequences of precision medicine in multiple settings. With this understanding, precision medicine becomes part of the broader practice of precision health, an important process proposed by nursing scholars to provide complete, holistic care to our patients...

Self-doubt may negatively affect the development of prelicensure nursing students as they prepare to become practice-ready members of the workforce. Walker and Avant's method of analysis was used to explore generalized self-doubt as well as within the context of a contemporary nursing education framework: Aller's Development of Decision-Making and Self-Efficacy Model (ADD-SEM). Results indicate that several attributes of generalized self-doubt, as a form of low psychological capital, were consistent with this construct of the ADD-SEM and should be considered as nurse educators strive to ensure new nurses are prepared for the complexity of today's health care systems...

Previously, we described the development of the first part of the framework of Patient and Informal Caregiver Participation in Research (PAICPAIR part 1) and how it was implemented in the empirical study Dying With Dignity. Currently, we present our choices and experiences gained in PAICPAIR part 2, highlighting how PAICPAIR guided us as a modifiable and adaptable framework, with a particular emphasis on identifying and meeting the individual needs of our vulnerable coresearchers. This framework can be used as a methodological approach and study design in future research and inspire researchers to include patients receiving palliative care and informal caregivers-as coresearchers...

This study sought to advance the literature on Black women's cardiovascular health (CVH) by examining maternal relationship, religion and spirituality, and social connections as potential protective social determinants that buffer the stress of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The outcome was the American Heart Association's ideal CVH score. Neither maternal relationship nor religion/spirituality was able to buffer the stress of ACEs on ideal CVH. Findings are discussed in terms of cultural aspects of potential protective factors that are critical for future research...

We use Fawcett and DeSanto-Madeya's framework to critique Fisher and Fisher's information-motivation-behavioral skills model and determine its usefulness and applicability for nursing. Our analysis and evaluation show that the model is a parsimonious and useful situation-specific theory for guiding nursing research and practice because it shows good fit with the nursing context, has social and theoretical significance, and exhibits empirical and pragmatic adequacy. More consistency in using terms referring to each concept would help to improve the model's internal consistency...

Results indicate that spirituality is a pervasive nursing ethic manifesting respect, connectedness, love, acceptance, caring, hope, endurance, and compassion toward clients...

Work-related musculoskeletal disorder is a major occupational health problem worldwide. The ecological model by Sauter and Swanson proposes a way in which psychosocial factors can influence musculoskeletal disorders. Employing Chinn and Kramer's framework, we evaluated the ecological model and found it had a specific scope for the working populations and clear concepts. This model also demonstrated high clarity, consistency, generalizability, and accessibility aligning with a nursing metaparadigm. Empirical evidence supports the applicability of the ecological model in nursing research and practices, but more research is needed for nursing-specific application...

A qualitative descriptive approach examined African American nurse scientists' (AANSs') experiences with African American research participants despite obstacles of structural racism. Fourteen nurse scientists participated in semistructured interviews that provided data for the thematic analysis. Major themes included barriers to overcome as doctoral students, cultural experiences with structural racism, designers of culturally sensitive research, and humanitarian respect and relationship depth. This is the first research study to illuminate the contributions of AANSs who lead research in health disparities...
