BACKGROUND: Nurses commonly experience psychological trauma with high risk for a host of mental health concerns such as suicide, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, as well as high rates of burnout and moral injury. Despite rigorous academic preparation, baccalaureate nursing education curricula lack content on the widespread effects of trauma. METHOD: Using a trauma informed care (TIC) model, an innovative course called Trauma Informed Care for Nursing Action (TIC4NA) was created...

BACKGROUND: Education providers teach numeracy to undergraduate nursing students using a diverse range of approaches. Proficiency in numeracy skills is critical for patient safety; however, alarmingly, the accuracy rate of calculations by both undergraduate nurses and RNs is reported to be low. METHOD: The literature search yielded 1,180 articles published between 1994 and 2022. The assessment of the studies was reported using the PRIMSA extension for Scoping Reviews...

BACKGROUND: Best practices for online course design aim to improve teaching and learning by emphasizing the relationship between a course's learning outcomes and all other parts of the course, from assessments to technology to student interaction with peers and instructors. The transition and expanded opportunities to online or hybrid learning in nursing education demonstrate the need for quality online learning experiences. METHOD: A university initiative to ensure high quality remote courses focused on expanding Quality Matters (QM) certification of hybrid and online courses, which ensures that a course has been developed according to standards for online learning...

BACKGROUND: LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual), and gender-nonconforming (GNC) individuals have limited access to quality care, leading to health disparities. Lack of training and implicit bias are significant contributors to discrimination. Nursing schools must provide opportunities for student interaction with vulnerable populations, and interacting with transgender and GNC individuals during clinical experiences may be challenging...

BACKGROUND: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based protocol for early identification and treatment for substance use. Adolescents are a high-risk group for substance use. METHOD: SBIRT simulation was conducted among nursing students ( n = 79). Surveys were administered before (pretest), immediately after (posttest 1), and 3 weeks (posttest 2) after simulation. Outcome scores including attitude, role security, therapeutic commitment, knowledge, confidence, competence, readiness, and response to scenarios and cases were compared between traditional undergraduate nursing students who received educational reinforcement before the posttest 2 survey and postbaccalaureate students...

BACKGROUND: The introduction of the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) necessitates the need to prepare students to demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment and reasoning. Innovative teaching strategies, such as the use of QR codes, may help to engage learners and promote the transition to the new NCLEX testing format. METHOD: A three-phase pediatric-based case study was used to introduce NGN style questions. The QR codes provided resources, answers, and rationales for the case study questions...

BACKGROUND: The complexity of health care requires entry-level nurses to have competent clinical judgment skills. In response, a nursing program created Reflective Clinical Judgment Questions (RCJQ) to guide students in the development of clinical judgment. METHOD: The RCJQ incorporates the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing's action questions, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's core competencies for professional nursing education...

In 2024, the Methodology Corner will briefly look at how we might foster enduring commitments from nurse education researchers to remain up-to-date on their statistical expertise and to use optimal statistical methods. The first column of the year specifically looks at how graduate programs might enrich their statistics curriculum in a manner that could foster an increasingly valid science of nursing education. BACKGROUND: Climate change is a recognized global threat to human health, and nurses must be prepared to mitigate its negative effects. This article describes nursing student and faculty opinions about climate change and associated planetary health curricular needs. METHOD: A survey including the Six Americas Super Short Survey and an adaptation of the Planetary Health Report Card was developed and emailed to nursing students and faculty. RESULTS: Student ( n = 72) and faculty ( n = 56) responses showed that although they were concerned about climate change, they were not confident in preparation of nurses student to climate change and its impact...

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the extent to which clinical judgment is important in entry-level nursing practice. METHOD: A task analysis linkage study methodology based on a large-scale, comprehensive practice analysis was used for the study. The practice analysis validated more than 200 entry-level nursing tasks, and the linkage study sought to evaluate the importance of clinical judgment overall and for each specific task expectation.
