Background Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) is essential for the diagnosis of sub-epidermal immunobullous diseases (SIBD). Bullous pemphigoid (BP), a sub-epidermal immunobullous disease, shows linear IgG and C3 deposition along the dermo-epidermal junction by DIF. However, similar histological and DIF findings are also seen in epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA). High-power examination of antibody deposition by DIF in a "u" or "n" serrated pattern can help differentiate these two entities. Aims/Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of serration patterns in IgG-mediated sub-epidermal immunobullous disease...

Hair dyeing is a popular practice dating back to ancient Egyptian times. Initially, hair dye use was restricted to concealing grey and white hairs of the elderly population. However, in recent times, its use is common among the younger generation as a fashion statement. Hair dye contact dermatitis is a common dermatological condition encountered by dermatologists. It is a delayed type of hypersensitivity reaction that commonly affects the scalp and the vicinity of hair line and neck. Para-phenylenediamine (PPD), a synthetic aromatic amine is the most common allergen specifically implicated in hair dye contact dermatitis...

Introduction There is ambiguity regarding usage of tranexamic acid for melasma in India, be it in its pre-administration evaluation, administration route, dosing or monitoring. Hence, we conducted this study to understand various tranexamic-acid prescribing patterns and provide practical guidelines. Materials and methods A Google-form-based questionnaire (25-questions) was prepared based on the key areas identified by experts from the Pigmentary Disorders Society, India and circulated to practicing dermatologists across the country...

Background Increasing urbanisation has led to the occurrence of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in new areas, which was otherwise localised to endemic areas. Healthcare workers should be made aware of this entity to ensure clinical suspicion of CL and investigations needed to confirm CL. The article describes patients seen at a tertiary hospital in Delhi. Aims To establish the utility of the CL Detect Rapid test as a diagnostic tool and the efficacy of Liposomal Amphotericin B (LAmB) for the complete cure of CL patients...

Background The effect of NDYag on normal skin flora and pathogenic microbes has not been studied. Objectives Evaluation of immediate (before versus after each session) and delayed (pre-first session versus pre-fourth session) antimicrobial effect of Nd:YAG laser-assisted hair removal. Methods Thirty females scheduled for axillary Nd:YAG laser hair removal were included. Skin swabs were collected from the vault of the dominant axilla before and after each of the four sessions. Bacteriological cultures were performed to record the counts of total aerobes, total anaerobes, lipophilic bacteria, total staphylococci, Staphylococcus epidermidis (S...

For any biological response, transmission of extracellular signals to the nucleus is required for DNA transcription and gene expression. In that respect, cytokines/chemokines are well-known inflammatory agents which play a critical role in signalling pathways by activating the Janus kinase-signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK-STAT) signalling proteins (Janus kinase-signal transducers and activators of transcription) which are a group of intracellular kinase molecules. Cytokines are a category of small proteins (∼5-25 kDa) that play a major role in cell signalling and are major drivers of an autoimmune response...

Skin cancer is a significant health burden being the fourth most common cancer globally and accounts for 6.2% of the total combined cancer cases. However, mortality rates due to skin cancer are less when compared with other cancers, but it is significantly high in the Asian population (43%). DNA mutations and environmental and genetic factors are linked with skin cancer prognosis; however, long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation remains one of the leading factors worldwide. Sun exposure is a major environmental risk factor for skin cancers but is also an essential source of vitamin D...
