Ethylene oxide (EtO), although banned for use, is still being detected in foodstuffs that have been fumigated to eradicate pests during storage and transport. Residual levels over the European Union's (EU) maximum residue limit (MRL) pose severe health concerns. Recent detection of EtO and its by-product 2-chloroethanol (2-CE) at alarming levels have led to product recalls throughout the EU. Here, a simple, automated headspace (HS)-trap method for the simultaneous determination of EtO and its derivative 2-CE by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) at the required MRL of ≤ 0...

This work developed a rapid colorimetric method for nitrite detection in meat products. The detection was based on the reaction of nitrite with 60 mM HCl to produce radicals which further oxidized ABTS (50 µM) to form a water-soluble blue-green product (ABTS•+ ). The absorbance was measured at a maximum absorption wavelength of 412.5 nm. Parameters such as concentration of HCl, concentration of ABTS and reaction time were evaluated. The absorbance was linearly proportional to the concentration of nitrite (0...

Exposure to glyphosate produces various toxic effects, due to this, different methods have been evaluated for its elimination. The objective of this work was to formulate chitosan-based adsorbents and evaluate their efficiency in the removal of glyphosate in vitro . Four films were made by varying the weight ratio of silica/chitosan particles, and four sponges were made by varying the chitosan/chitosan ratio in a reticulated manner. Both adsorbents were characterized based on their porosity, water absorption, glyphosate removal, and reusability...

The methods used were chemical mixtures: modified sol-gel and Pechini. The materials were calcined at different temperatures (753, 873 and 993K) and characterized by the following techniques: photoacousticspectroscopy (PAS), zero charge point (pHPZC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)...

Although previous studies have investigated the occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquaculture, few have monitored the concentrations and propagation of ARGs in biological tissues or investigated the key factors influencing their spread in aquaculture. This study investigated the concentration, propagation, and distribution of ARGs and bacterial communities in water sources, pond water, and tilapia tissues, and their key influencing factors, in a typical tilapia farm. The contamination of soil with residual amounts of pesticides remains an urgent challenge for human community. The most efficient approach to address this challenge is the direct microbial degradation of a pesticide in agricultural lands. To this end, the selected microorganisms, which quickly and completely utilize pesticides, are employed. In the present work, two herbicides belonging to different classes of chemical compounds, that is, imazamox and chlorsulfuron were used. The screening of promising microorganisms was carried out among different strains of bacteria and fungi in a liquid mineral medium containing a pesticide as the only source of carbon...

Pesticides are on the list of substances that are routinely monitored by agencies and organizations in various natural environments and habitats. Diazinon (DZN) is the active ingredient in more than 20 agricultural pesticides, it causes the most damage and has been prohibited in many countries around the world. The final product CoWO4 /g-C3 N4 Z-scheme heterojunction was successfully synthesized in this work, where CoWO4 nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of g-C3 N4 . CoWO4 /g-C3 N4 structure allowed for the efficient separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, with electrons at the CoWO4 CB migrating to the g-C3 N4 VB and preserving the electrons at the g-C3 N4 CB and holes in the CoWO4 VB...

Meanwhile, the degradation of the TBT or TPhT was also evaluated. Concentrations of total organotins in seafood, agricultural products, and wine were 1047.2, 469.4, and 13.5 μg Sn/kg. Meanwhile, the most frequently detected organotin in three kinds of samples were TPhT, MPhT, and MPhT, respectively. The results demonstrated that phenyltin may probably become an emerging organotin pollutant...

Accidental herbicide drift onto neighboring crops, such as soybeans, can seriously harm non-target plants, affecting their growth and productivity. This study examined the impact of simulated drift from ten different herbicides (2,4-D, dicamba, glyphosate, saflufenacil, oxyfluorfen, hexazinone, diuron, diquat, nicosulfuron, and isoxaflutole) on young soybean plants. These herbicides were applied at three simulated drift levels (1/4, 1/16, and 1/32) equivalent to recommended commercial doses, and the resulting symptoms were carefully evaluated...

The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of how Tulipa luanica adapts to growth in soil with higher concentrations of heavy metals and to assess potential toxic effects using various biomarkers, in comparison to Tulipa kosovarica , a typical serpentine species. For this purpose, we analyzed the concentrations of Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the soil, as well as their accumulation in plants and their associated stress effects. The results indicate that, despite the presence of some metals in very high concentrations in the soil (Al, Fe, Mn, and Ni), they are translocated in minimal amounts within plant organs, particularly in T...

Applied pesticides end up in non-target environments as complex mixtures. When bioavailable, these chemicals pose a threat to living organisms and can induce oxidative stress (OS). In this article, attention is paid to OS and the physiological role of the antioxidant defense system. South African and international literature was reviewed to provide extensive evidence of pesticide-induced OS in non-target organisms, in vivo and in vitro . Although in vitro approaches are used internationally, South African studies have only used in vivo methods...

In this study, a resonance Rayleigh scattering technique-based sensing method for detecting Bentazone residual in water samples has been developed. This technique was carried out using chitosan-capped gold nanoparticles with a spectrofluorimetric method. Experimental results revealed that the developed method could allow the detection of Bentazone residual as low as a concentration of 0.02 ng mL-1 within 50-sec time. Overall results confirmed the very low detection limit for measuring the Bentazone. The chitosan-capped gold nanoparticles as an excellent sensor were applied to measure and analyze Bentazone in water samples...
