The frequency of Marek's disease in broiler chickens as measured by gross evidence of tumors at processing differs markedly among flocks and between poultry farm origin. Organs affected in broilers, in order of frequency of tumors, were proventriculus (57.6%), spleen (42.3%), kidney (30.6%), lung (19.1%), liver (15.3%), gonads (12.3%), heart (7.6%). Virus isolations were performed on samples from three broiler flocks to examine the possibility that such differences in MD incidence were causally related to differences in the frequency of naturally occurring, nononcogenic serotype 2MD virus infection...

The steady-state fluorescence anisotropy measurements on influenza and parainfluenza viruses, showed no changes in the microviscosity of the viral membranes after exposure to UV-irradiation, when a fluorescent probe was used, but the intrinsic fluorescence of viral proteins presented, under the same experimental conditions, a significant difference of anisotropy behaviour in the two viruses used.

Cytotoxic potential of suboptimal doses of vincristine associated with human interferon was studied in two cell lines of tumoral origin, as compared to the action of or gamma type interferon preparations. Results show that the vincristine cytotoxic effect may be synergistically augmented in both culture types by simultaneous interferon administration.

A major problem concerning interferon (IFN)-cell interaction is the second messenger system that transduces the IFN signal. We discuss the evidences existing in literature and our arguments which suggest that the antiviral effect of IFNs alpha and beta are mediated by a membrane mechanism including a phospholipase C dependent hydrolysis of phosphoinositides. The resulting two second messengers: diacylglycerol and inositol triphosphate and subsequent, separate but interacting, signal pathways: activation of protein kinase C and ionic events are tested in respect with the antiviral effect of IFN...

This work presents the results of a study on some viral, chlamydial, rickettsial and mycoplasmal agents incidence and their role on several gynecological ailments: vulvovaginitis, cervicitis, cervicovaginitis. The presence of some viral, chlamydial, rickettsial and mycoplasmal antigens in the vaginal secretion was investigated by immunofluorescence technique, isolation on selective media for Mycoplasma, and MGG staining in a group of 60 women with gynecopathies (group A) and in a control group (also 60 clinically healthy women) (group B)...

The possibilities of the molecular hybridization test, i.e. test, i.e. using neuraminidase probes of different subtypes for subtype specific detection of influenza, as well as different probes (PA, M, NP) for type A specific detection of influenza viruses in infected cells were shown. The results of molecular hybridization in washings' analyses from patients during the outbreaks give us an opportunity to make some conclusions about the usefulness of the method in epidemic control of influenza morbidity.

A study to determine the activity of influenza virus among the children population was undertaken between 1985 and 1987 in Nigeria. Paired sera were obtained from children presenting with respiratory diseases at the children emergency and outpatient clinics of the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Forty-two paired sera were examined by haemagglutination-inhibition test to determine HI antibody level of the patients to different serotypes of influenza virus. Ninety percent of the children showed serological evidence of previous contact with influenza A virus subtypes while only 24% were positive when tested against influenza B virus...

The report briefly reviews the strategies of utilisation of the avidin-biotin system and its variants, as well as the applications of this system in different fields, especially those linked to the diagnosis and the treatment of some viral and bacterial infections. Some of the techniques using the system are presented, as well as its advantages and the perspectives to ameliorate the methodologies and to enlarge the field of its applications.

A study was conducted on the protective effect of some ribosomal preparations, isolated from chorionic-allantoic membranes of chicken embryos, infected or not with parainfluenza (Sendai) or influenza (AoPR8) virus, in mice experimentally inoculated with influenza virus strain AoPR8 adapted to the mouse. Results showed that the tested preparation, containing ribosomes and polysomes isolated from chorio-allantoic membranes of Sendai virus inoculated chicken embryos, ensure the mice complete protection against AoPR8 virus, if administrated before the control infection...

Attempts have been made to culture mononuclear cells from synovial fluid of 8 patients with arthropathy, and have led to the development of the lymphoid cell line IVPat-88. Cell line has been propagated by serial passages for more than 14 weeks in continuous culture. The cells grew as single, free-floating individuals, or in dense clumps without adherence to glass or plastic surface. All these cells were identified as altered lymphoblasts because of their growth pattern and uniform morphology, and the presence of Epstein-Barr Viral Capsid Antigen (VCA) in 5 to 10% of the cells...

This study is a preliminary report of the national registry of S.S.P.E. cases started in 1987 which continue early epidemiological inquiries concerning incidence in Romania during the decade 1978-1987. The analysis pointed out the high incidence of this disease: a mean incidence rate of 6.35 cases per year per million total population in the last three years. Since 1979 there has been in Romania a sharp decline in the incidence of measles induced by the initiation of compulsory vaccination. As yet this decline is not reflected in S...

A newly recorded case of presenile dementia (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) is discussed. The disease is experimentally transmissible to guinea pigs, after a long incubation period. A survey for yellow fever haemagglutination inhibiting antibody was carried out before and after the 1987 yellow fever epidemics in Nigeria in two localities in Oyo State, namely: Ibadan and Ogbomosho. A total of 129 sera were collected from the two localities before the epidemic. The overall prevalence of yellow fever HI antibody was 37%. A breakdown of positive sera showed that 30/100 and 18/29 sera tested in Ibadan and Ogbomosho respectively were positive. The presence of neutralizing antibodies was tested using the types 1, 2 and 3 Sabin vaccine strains as well as a wild strain of poliovirus type 1 isolated in France in 1978.
