Hair samples were collected at time of delivery from 57 neonates whose mothers were known users of heroin (9 cases), nicotine (34 cases), benzodiazepines (11 cases), cocaine (2 cases) and amphetamine (1 case). In all cases, the corresponding drug was found in neonatal hair from the infants, with concentrations in the range 0.61-3.47 ng/mg (morphine), 0.15-11.80 ng/mg (nicotine), 3.36-17.55 ng/mg (diazepam), 0.78-31.83 ng/mg (oxazepam), 0.71-2.47 ng/mg (benzoylecgonine) and 1.21 ng/mg (amphetamine). Results are considered in the light of the existing literature and comparison with adults...

A radial diffusion assay in an agarose/starch gel utilizing crude kidney bean extract and a commercially prepared alpha-amylase inhibitor isolated from wheat seeds was developed and assessed to determine its ability to differentiate alpha-amylase from various sources. Kidney bean extract was found to have a greater inhibitory effect on AMY2, while the wheat lectin inhibitor was found to have a greater inhibitory effect on AMY1. Neither inhibitor was found to have any effect on commercially prepared bacterial alpha-amylase extract in both liquid preparations and dried stains...

DNA profiling allows determination of the alleles at multiple loci on an individual's genome. The frequencies of these alleles are then estimated from a sample drawn from the population. If the occurrences of alleles at different loci are independent, the frequencies may be multiplied together to give an estimate of the probability of DNA from a randomly-chosen member of the population matching the DNA in question. However, there is doubt as to whether the assumption of independence can be justified. This paper discusses a method of calculating the probability of a match that does not require the assumption of independence...

Benzodiazepines have been regarded as relatively safe drugs but since triazolam was introduced into Denmark in 1978, six fatal cases of poisoning by triazolam alone or in combination with ethanol, have occurred in East Denmark. In one case where no ethanol was detected, a blood triazolam concentration of 0.11 mg/l was found. In another case in which blood was unavailable because of putrefaction, muscle was analyzed. In the four cases in which the ethanol concentration was in the range 110-202 mg/100 ml, the triazolam concentration range was 0...

Paired human teeth and fresh blood samples were analysed for the genetic markers ABO, PGM1, GLO-I, EsD, EAP, AK, ADA, 6-PGD, G-6-PD and CA-II. ABO blood groups were successfully determined from dentine, pulp and cement samples whereas only dental pulp could be typed for different isozymes. Studies on the persistence of these genetic markers in teeth stored at room temperature showed that ABO blood groups were the most stable, followed by PGM1 and ADA isozymes, whereas CA-II isozymes were the least stable.

In a short period of time, the law in Scotland has developed in two ways. Firstly, the law changed recently to allow the prosecution of a husband where a couple were in fact separated at the time of the rape. Secondly, the law moved forward again to the present position where a charge of rape is competent even if the couple are living together at the time of the incident complained of.

The extraction of basic drugs from the urine of racing greyhounds has been carried out for many years using solvent extraction. This paper describes an extraction method that utilises a cation exchange column. Fourteen basic drugs were introduced onto the column in their ionised form, washed with organic and aqueous solvents and eluted with basic methanol. Three drugs, cyclizine, procaine and quinine were determined in authentic samples from racing greyhounds. A comparison of the solid-phase method with liquid-liquid extraction showed an increase in the efficiency of extraction and a reduction in both the time and cost incurred...

A man was charged with reckless driving in that it caused a collision in which a child of thirty-five weeks gestation, then in utero, was delivered alive but died shortly thereafter. Objections by defence lawyers that no death had been caused within the meaning of the statute were rejected and an appeal on the same ground was refused. Thereafter the man pleaded guilty.

A new technique is described of obtaining a replica cast of the human skull base by making an epoxy resin case from a silicone rubber mould of the skull base. The replica provides an accurate and permanent record of the shape and dimensions of the base of the cranial cavity, together with the location and extent of any fractures of the skull. The method gives a good correlation between these characteristics and the type and extent of brain damage.

A breath alcohol profile is generated as a continuous function of time while a person is providing a breath sample. This paper describes a data acquisition system which samples breath alcohol concentrations at discrete intervals during exhalation. The data are stored on disk for later analysis. It is shown that the area under the profile curve for samples preceded by breath-holding is significantly larger than when breathing is normal prior to sample provision (p less than 0.001). The differences between the breath alcohol concentration measurements are also statistically significant (p less than 0...

The exact projective symmetry manifested in photographs is broken if the object is not flat. It has been found that front view perspectives of the human face, photographed with limited variations in camera angle (within 30 degrees) show a breaking projective symmetry sufficiently small to be considered for accurate comparison. As a practical implementation of this new approach, a computer-controlled video camera superimposition technique has been developed and demonstrated in the identification of a disguised human face...

A case of possible malicious poisoning of dogs by endrin was investigated. A variety of tissues were analysed. The stomach contents of one dog contained 5 g/kg endrin. The results are compared with recorded data from feeding studies pursued elsewhere to aid the diagnosis of dieldrin and endrin intoxication. A number of organochlorine compounds closely related chemically to endrin were tentatively identified.

A sensitive immunoblotting procedure has been applied to the detection of alpha-2-HS-glycoprotein (A2HS) phenotypes from control and casework bloodstains. A2HS phenotypes were separated by thin layer polyacrylamide gel isoelectric focusing (PAGIEF) in gels containing Pharmalyte pH 4.2-4.9. After transfer to nitrocellulose by a rapid capillary blot, the A2HS phenotypes were developed using a double antibody enzyme-immunoassay. The evaluation of A2HS phenotyping of casework material was undertaken in parallel with phosphoglucomutase (PGM) phenotyping by PAGIEF...

This paper provides an insight into the mechanism of a coerced-internalized type of false confession. The case involved an American airman who confessed to the murder of a close friend after "failing" four polygraph tests. Psychological and psychiatric reports were prepared at the request of the defence and the findings were presented at a military hearing. The airman's confession was ruled involuntary, leading to a dismissal of the charges. The authors discuss the case with reference to the relevant literature on false confession and pseudomemories...

When he examined the body, a black yarmulke was present near the outstretched hand of the burglar. DNA profiles prepared using multilocus probes can provide valuable evidence in cases of disputed parentage. This paper describes a simple approach to the analysis of the profiles from a mother, child and putative father in a case of disputed paternity. Although the treatment has not yet been extended to deal with cases in which mutant bands may have appeared, it has already proved useful in casework. The analysis is illustrated by a numerical example calculated on a computer spreadsheet.

The performance of the polymorphic marker systems group-specific component (GC), phosphoglucomutase-1 (PGM), alpha-2-HS-glycoprotein (A2HS), haptoglobin (Hp), and erythrocyte acid phosphatase (EAP) was evaluated on control bloodstains. The major factors considered were: sensitivity of the test system; stability of the marker; laboratory economics of each test; and distinguishing power (Dp) of the system. GC was considered to be the most suitable marker for routine screening because of its high stability and Dp, and the sensitivity of the immunoblotting detection method...
