This report describes a case of periodontitis treated with periodontal surgery including guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and recombinant human fibroblast growth factor (rhFGF)-2. The patient was a 54-year-old woman who visited the Tokyo Dental College Suidobashi Hospital with the chief complaint of swelling in the maxillary right gingiva. An initial examination revealed 30.4% of sites with a probing depth (PD) of ≥4 mm. The prevalence of sites with bleeding on probing was 57.7%. The plaque control record (PCR) score was 66...

This report describes the treatment of severe skeletal Class II malocclusion in a young woman with a gummy smile and pronounced lower anterior facial height. Overjet and overbite were +12.0 mm and -1.0 mm, respectively. Cephalometric analysis revealed inferior positioning of the maxilla and severe mandibular retrusion with clockwise rotation. Both the upper and lower anterior teeth showed labial inclination. Based on a diagnosis of a skeletal Class II high angle with mandibular retrusion and a gummy smile, double-jaw orthognathic surgeries for upper and lower premolar extraction were chosen to gain ideal occlusion and an improvement in the esthetic facial profile...

In this study, original leeway space was determined using plaster models prepared from the same individuals over successive years and compared with that reported in an earlier study. The plaster models used for measurement were prepared from a normal dentition group comprising 64 patients and a crowded dentition group comprising 29. The mesiodistal crown width of the deciduous canines, deciduous first molars, and deciduous second molars, as well as that of the canines, first premolars, and second premolars was measured...

Post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathic pain is mainly caused by the extraction of third molars or the placement of dental implants. This report describes the treatment of neuropathic pain arising after guided tissue regeneration (GTR). The patient was a 55-year-old woman who had to undergo GTR due to severe periodontitis in the distal aspect of the right mandibular second molar. Postoperatively, the patient had been prescribed mecobalamin for hypesthesia and allodynia in the right lower lip. No improvement was observed in these symptoms after 4 months, however, so she was referred to our Orofacial Pain Center...

Odontoblasts differentiate from dental papilla stem cells, but the genetic changes that occur during this process remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate gene expression patterns during differentiation of mouse iPS cells into odontoblast-like cells. Mouse iPS cells were cultured on a collagen type-1 scaffold with bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) and retinoic acid (RA). The results of immunofluorescence studies for dentin sialoprotein, dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1), and nestin were positive...

Whether there is a relationship between impaction of the third molars and the onset of crowding remains to be determined, and extraction of third molars after orthodontic treatment is left to the judgement of the practitioner. This report describes a case where a third molar caused external root resorption (ERR) of the mandibular second molar after orthodontic treatment. As ERR of the mandibular second molar was detected after non-extraction orthodontic treatment, the affected tooth was extracted and substituted with the third molar...

Trigeminal neuralgia occurs in the orofacial region, characteristically causing pain that feels like a transient electric shock. Some histopathological studies have reported that trigeminal neuralgia is caused by mechanical compression of the demyelinated trigeminal nerve; the pathophysiological mechanism behind this phenomenon remains to be clarified, however. Cell-cell interactions have also been reported to be involved in the development and modulation of some types of neuropathic pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential contribution of cell-cell interactions to trigeminal neuralgia by measuring intracellular free Ca2+ concentrations ([Ca2+ ]i ) in primary cultured trigeminal ganglion (TG) cells...

Serum serves as a source of rich nutrients during in vitro cell culture, facilitating cell adhesion, growth, and differentiation. When culturing stem cells for transplantation, however, it must be remembered that such culture medium may contain substances potentially harmful to the proposed recipient and may even induce cellular damage. The purpose of this study was to determine whether KnockOut Serum Replacement (KSR), a chemically defined medium supplement, enhanced in vitro differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells into odontoblasts...

The current poor status of and problems with victim identification work were highlighted in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, in which some 10,000 people lost their lives. The techniques of dental identification therefore need to be improved if they are to cope with the problems associated with identification that will accompany the predicted Tokai earthquake and other unexpected large-scale disasters in the future...

Abutment teeth and CAD/CAM crowns were prepared as they would be for treating a mandibular first premolar with two cusps. The CAD/CAM crowns were designed so that 1) the principal stress lines would be radially distributed from the two points of contact with the indenter to the occlusal area of the abutment (Type I), or 2) the principal stress lines would pass outside the occlusal area of the abutment (Types II and III)...

Chronic periodontitis is an infectious disease caused by periodontopathic bacteria in subgingival plaque. One major pathogen of this disease, Treponema denticola, has several virulence factors, including a major surface protein (Msp) and the surface protease dentilisin. The cytopathic effects of periodontopathic bacteria on epithelial cells disrupt the integrity of the barrier junction, resulting in the inflammation of periodontal tissue. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of T. denticola virulence factors dentilisin and Msp on epithelial cells...

The purpose of this study was to determine whether it was possible to detect change from normal epithelium to leukoplakic OSCC using a fluorescence visualization (FV) device in a 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO) -induced rat tongue cancer model. If successful, this would facilitate early detection of OSCC. The rats (3 groups of 5) were administered 50 ppm 4NQO in their drinking water over a period of 10, 15, or 20 weeks. Five non-treated rats were used as a control group...

When pain adversely affects a patient's activities its diagnosis needs to be fast and accurate to allow effective treatment to be commenced as soon as possible. Difficulties may be found in achieving this, however, in elderly patients with age-associated cognitive decline, as they may not be capable of properly understanding or recalling their symptoms.
