OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship in equine practice between the time delay for charge entry (time between when work was performed and when the invoice charges were entered) and the total amount of the invoice. SAMPLE: A total of 67,597 invoices from 3 hospitals were included for analysis. METHODS: Analysis of 67,597 invoices from 49 doctors working out of 3 hospitals was performed. Variables collected included invoice total, date of work, date of invoice entry, month of work, invoice category (A = ambulatory daytime, E = after-hours, I = hospital), and veterinarian...

OBJECTIVE: To report the survival times in dogs diagnosed with adrenal tumors with vascular or soft tissue invasion that did not undergo adrenalectomy. ANIMALS: Retrospective case series of 32 client-owned dogs. METHODS: The medical records of a referral veterinary hospital were reviewed to identify dogs that were diagnosed with an invasive adrenal mass and did not undergo adrenalectomy between January 2013 and December 2022. Data collected included signalment, examination findings, and diagnostic results from the initial presentation...

Tracy L Webb, Craig B Webb
Despite a pressing need for new therapies to address unmet veterinary medical need, no approved stem cell products are available for use in cats in the US. To evaluate the current state of mesenchymal stem or stromal cell (MSC) research in cats, a scoping review of published literature was performed, which identified 108 publications related to feline MSCs. Twenty-six of the articles described administration of MSC products to a total of 215 cats. Twelve of the studies included a control group. These experimental and clinical trials used 7 cell sources, 9 administration routes, 12 delivery vehicles, and a 300-fold range in dosages for initial studies in healthy cats and cats with 12 naturally occurring and induced diseases...

OBJECTIVE: To provide a video tutorial detailing how to perform continuous noninvasive blood pressure monitoring in dogs and cats. ANIMALS: Any size dog or cat. METHODS: To measure blood pressure noninvasively, a blood pressure cuff is selected on the basis of the circumference of the limb and placed at the level of the right atrium. For oscillometric blood pressure measurement, the cuff is connected to an oscillometric unit that will automatically inflate and deflate the cuff in order to measure the patient's blood pressure using an internal algorithm...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy of 4 preoperative parameters (signalment, urinalysis, urine microbiological culture, and digital radiography) in predicting urocystolith composition, compare accuracy between evaluators of varying clinical experience and a mobile application, and propose a novel algorithm to improve accuracy. ANIMALS: 175 client-owned dogs with quantitative analyses of urocystoliths between January 1, 2012, and July 31, 2020. METHODS: Prospective experimental study...

Rodrigo Rosa, Richard E Buckley
The topic of dog-walking injuries has recently gained notoriety through major media outlets in North America, including the Washington Post, NPR, and US News and World Report. In this review, we have compiled data from the main studies published in the past 2 decades that assess the incidence, demographics, and injury patterns related to dog leash walking. The available papers indicate that dog leash-related injuries have increased, particularly among women over 65. The most common causes of injury are dog-pulling behavior, which can result in tripping or tangling, with or without a fall, as well as upper extremity injuries...

A scoping review of published literature found 108 articles related to mesenchymal stem or stromal cell (MSC) use in cats. Twenty-four of the publications summarized the treatment of 192 cats with MSC products for 12 naturally occurring and induced diseases. These trials used a variety of cell sources, administration routes, delivery vehicles, and dosages. The majority of studies did not have a control group. The disease with the largest number of cats administered MSCs thus far is chronic kidney disease (n = 59 cats)...

Nutrition is considered a key part of the management of pancreatitis in dogs and cats. While limited prospective research exists, experimental studies, retrospective studies, and anecdote allow for formulation of nutritional guidelines. Historically, fat has been considered the key nutrient of interest in pancreatitis; however, other nutrients and dietary factors, including energy density, digestibility, protein, carbohydrates, and fiber, are all of importance in these patients. Indeed protein particle size may be of greater significance than dietary fat in the management of pancreatitis in cats...

OBJECTIVE: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as a biotherapeutic for osteoarthritis; however, manufacturing large quantities is not practical using traditional monolayer (2-D) culture. We aimed to examine the effects of 3-D and 2-D culture 2 types of media: Dulbecco modified Eagle medium and a commercially available medium (CM) on EV yield. ANIMALS: Banked bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) from 6 healthy, young horses were used...

OBJECTIVE: To compare results from 2 previously published surveys aimed at determining how pyometra is treated in high-quality, high-volume spay-neuter clinics (HQHVSNCs) and private practices (PPs), with a specific focus on identifying opportunities for partnership between the clinic types to improve access to care in pyometra treatment. SAMPLE: Responses from 123 PPs and 87 HQHVSNCs. METHODS: A previously published survey of PPs conducted from June to July 2021 and a similar previously published survey of HQHVSNCs conducted from June to July 2020 were compared regarding demographics, pyometra treatment availability, estimated outcome, alternative outcome, disruption, cost, and protocol between HQHVSNCs and PPs...
