BACKGROUND: An "epidemic use" of legal opioids in the USA and other countries has been reported in the last 15 years. We have analysed the database of the Italian Ministry of Health regarding the prescription of opioids for pain management to verify the trend of opioids uses in Italy. METHODS: The amount of opioids prescribed for every single Italian patient in 2013 was anonymously recorded and transformed in daily MED (morphine equivalent dose). We considered every monthly percentage increase of MED during the entire period of chronic therapy for each patient...

OBJECTIVES: Previous epidemiological studies reported a significantly higher risk of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in Italian male soccer players. As a consequence, sports newspapers and news agencies focused on this issue and spread the news of 51 male soccer players with a reported diagnosis of ALS. DESIGN: We searched news on male Italian national soccer players with a reported diagnosis of ALS quoted from January 1, 1950 to July 31, 2016 in at least two Internet web sites or in books by journalists...

The transmission of enteric pathogens by fresh produce depends on the survival of the bacteria organisms during the product shelf-life. The removal of any potentially hazardous microorganism from the vegetables is therefore dependent on the washing and sanitizing techniques employed by individual households. For this purpose, in this work we investigated the persistence of enteric bacteria, using as model Salmonella enterica serovar Napoli (S. Napoli) and Yersinia enterocolitica, in vegetables stored at refrigeration temperature (4 °C)...

INTRODUCTION: Aiming at generating evidence for cost-effective public health (PH) interventions for suicidal behaviour (SB) prevention in South Eastern Europe, the objective was to identify adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) most strongly predicting SB in emerging adults. METHODS: Survey data of 3283 students aged 18-29 from Montenegro and Romania were analysed by logistic regression. Based on estimation of risk-for-SB, the profiles with the highest values were identified...

INTRODUCTION: The Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R) is a tool to assess women's childbirth satisfaction. The aim of this research was to achieve the cross-cultural and conceptual equivalence of the BSS-R tool in Italian. METHOD: The World Health Organization (WHO) method was adopted to achieve the BSS-R in Italian. This is a well-established method using forward-translations and back-translations. This process has been refined in the course of several WHO studies to result in five steps: forward translation, expert panel translation, back-translation, pre-testing and cognitive interviewing, final version...

BACKGROUND: Since overweight and obesity has become epidemic in children and adolescents, the aim of this study was to determine the role of highly-integrated programs in preventing and reducing prevalence of children and adolescent obesity and overweight, even evaluating if this approach has properly been effective in communities with different determinants as in the Pacific Area. METHODS: According to PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review of literature was conducted and a meta-analysis was performed to compare obese/overweight prevalence between the intervention and the control group...

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in technology development for precision medicine, obstacles remain as barriers to progress and change. In this context simple questions arise: what is the level of understanding of precision medicine among healthcare professionals? We tried to address this question with a survey whose objective was to explore the perception and understanding of precision medicine. METHODS: A questionnaire was administered to a sample made of oncologists, clinical and hospital pharmacists, pharmacologists and infectiologists in the context of five different Italian national congresses...

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) in patients with chronic diseases. METHODS: Patients (n = 236) with chronic diseases completed the MSPSS and the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire. The MSPSS factorial structure was analysed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and internal consistency reliability was evaluated with Cronbach's alpha, the factor score determinacy coefficient and the model-based internal consistency index...

BACKGROUND: Tobacco cigarette smoke (TCS) was previously demonstrated to affect the innate and adaptive immune responses as a consequence of oxidant generation which play a pivotal role in neutrophilic airway inflammation. Aim of this paper was to investigate whether electronic cigarette smoke (ECS) generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) similarly to cigarette smoke. METHOD: By means of a house made apparatus, ECS and TCS were collected in fetal bovine serum (FBS) which was used to grow immune cells isolated from rats...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiation therapy (RT) for breast cancer after conservative surgery can be life-saving but remains associated with significant late side effects, including lung fibrosis, detected by chest CT. Aim of this study was to assess whether lung ultrasound (LUS) may detect late lung fibrosis through the biomarker of B-lines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 30 women (median age 67 years, range 46-80 years) about 3-8 years after RT (follow up 38-101 months, median 58 months) for left (n = 12) or right (n = 18) breast cancer (stage 1, n = 24; stage 2, n = 6), treated with total dose 40...

Plantar pressure is critical in the onset of neuropathic foot ulcers. However, risk classifications do not consider it as a stratification parameter. Whether plantar pressure distribution affects ulcer-risk was investigated. Patients from a research study (n. 134) and from a clinical environment (n. 83) were classified into ulcer-risk groups according to the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot guidelines. Pressure distribution was acquired during gait (Pedar-X System), and assessed for hindfoot, midfoot, forefoot and toes (1way- and 2way-ANOVAs, p < 0...

The implementation of a Cognitive-Behavioural Group Intervention (CBGI) in Italian general hospital psychiatric units started in the years 2000-2001 in two Italian regions. Over the years it has became more and more popular also in other psychiatric units located in the rest of the country. Based on the "stress-vulnerability-coping" theory, the CBGI is a replicable and innovative psychosocial intervention that promotes the active involvement of inpatients in decisions concerning their individual objectives and care...

The Law of 3 January 2018 established in Italy the "National Centre for the Coordination of Regional Ethics Committees for Clinical Trials of Medicines and Medical Devices for Human Use" and reduced the number of ethics committees in the country to 40. This Act should, amongst other things, facilitate Italy's compliance with the provisions set forth in European Regulation (EU) 536/2014. Hopefully, in addition to the provisions set forth in the Law, the National Centre will strive to foster the harmonisation of ethics committee procedures, in order to reform Italian legislation on the evaluation of clinical trials and, more generally, biomedical studies...

INTRODUCTION: Frailty is a dynamic syndrome and may be reversible. Despite this, little is known about trajectories or transitions between different stages of frailty. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted, selecting studies reporting frailty trajectories or transition states for adults in any settings in European ADVANTAGE Joint Action Member States. RESULTS: Only three papers were included. Data were from longitudinal community-based cohorts in the United Kingdom, Netherlands and Italy...

INTRODUCTION: Because of the dynamic nature of frailty, prospective epidemiological data are essential to calibrate an adequate public health response. METHODS: A systematic review of literature on frailty incidence was conducted within the European Joint Action ADVANTAGE. RESULTS: Of the 6 studies included, only 3 were specifically aimed at estimating frailty incidence, and only 2 provided disaggregated results by at least gender. The mean follow-up length (1-22...
