BACKGROUND: Little is known about the association between serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) concentration and anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis. This study aims to investigate if serum NSE concentration is related to the clinical features of anti-NMDAR encephalitis. METHODS: Serum NSE levels were detected in 58 anti-NMDAR encephalitis cases, 58 matched healthy controls and 58 matched disease controls. Demographic features, clinical symptoms, cerebrospinal fluid parameters and brain MRI indexes of the cases were evaluated...

Free thyroid hormone (FTH) serves as the preferred indicator for the clinical assessment of thyroid function, mainly encompassing free thyroxine and free triiodothyronine. The immunoassay commonly employed in the clinical setting exhibits certain unresolvable deficiencies. The results of over 5,500 clinical laboratories for FTH from China in 2024 demonstrated that the outcomes of immunoassay were not comparable, with robust CVs calculated in accordance with ISO 13528 ranging from 13.82% to 21.42%. Establishing reference methods is an important tool to achieve accurate and comparable results of free hormones...

BACKGROUND: Evaluating the clinical performance of Elecsys HIV Duo assay for primary human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening and acute HIV infection detection. METHODS: This study was conducted from April 2022 to April 2023 and involved two distinct populations. For the HIV screening population, three HIV Duo results [HIV Duo, HIV antigen (Ag), and HIV antibody (Ab)] in primary screening were obtained (January 2021 to June 2021). In the diagnosed HIV population, retrospective samples from November 2016 to March 2023 were measured...

Salivaomics is a promising method for the early detection and monitoring of head and neck cancer (HNC). By analyzing salivary proteomics, RNA, and DNA, it identifies biomarkers that distinguish HNC patients from healthy individuals. Saliva's non-invasive, easily collectible nature and affordability make it an advantageous screening tool. Multiomics approaches, which explore genetic mutations, gene expression patterns, protein profiles, and metabolite levels, provide a comprehensive molecular perspective that enhances clinical applicability...

BACKGROUND: Microalbuminuria is associated with several clinical conditions of public health concern. Particularly in diabetic patients, there is routine microalbuminuria screening to understand whether the renal complication has progressed to the microalbuminuria stage or not. Therefore, microalbuminuria detection is a matter of considerable interest. For such detection, the clinical labs rely on immunochemical methods. Nevertheless, the immunochemical methods are believed to be less sensitive for the purpose...

Infectious diseases significantly impact global health, necessitating prompt diagnosis to mitigate life-threatening sepsis risk. Identifying patients at risk of severe neurological complications from enterovirus infections is challenging due to nonspecific initial presentations. Point-of-care testing (POCT) has emerged as a transformative tool, with low-cost lateral-flow colorimetric assays showing promise in deployable POCT devices. We developed a PCT/IL-6 rapid diagnostic system integrating lateral flow assay (LFA) test strips and a portable optical spectrum reader, allowing simultaneous semi-quantitative measurement of serum PCT and IL-6 within 30 min at the point of care...

Ovarian cancer, a prevalent and deadly cancer among women, presents a significant challenge for early detection due to its heterogeneous nature. MicroRNAs, short non-coding regulatory RNA fragments, play a role in various cellular processes. Aberrant expression of these microRNAs has been observed in the carcinogenesis-related processes of many cancer types. Numerous studies highlight the critical role of microRNAs in the initiation and progression of ovarian cancer. Given their clinical importance and predictive value, there has been considerable interest in developing simple, prompt, and sensitive miRNA biosensor strategies...

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a common type of acute leukemia (AL), belonging to malignant tumors of the hematopoietic system with the characteristics of rapid disease development, control with extreme difficulties, easy recurrence, poor prognosis, and incidence rate increasing with age. The traditionally diagnostic standard of French American British (FAB), being based on the morphological examination with high human subjectivity, can no longer meet the demand of clinical diagnosis and treatment of AML. Requirements of objective accuracy and low-dose sample, have become the indispensable method for AML diagnosis and monitoring prognosis...

BACKGROUND-AIM: Methylmalonic acid (MMA) is currently the best biomarker of functional vitamin B12 deficiency. However, for a correct interpretation of the patient's results it is necessary to know its biological variation (BV). No BV data are available for urine MMA values, as measured by mass spectrometry. Hence, the aim of this study was to estimate the within- and between-person coefficients of variation (CVw, CVg ) for MMA in a healthy population, and the associated index of individuality (II), as well as to define quality specifications based on BV and the reference change value (RCV)...

Hemolysis is the most prevalent pre-analytical interfering factor and a major source of error in laboratory analysis. The examination of samples post-centrifugation can provide valuable information regarding pre-analytical interferences. In this unusual case, a patient's plasma specimen was cherry-red after centrifugation, which is most usually indicative of hemolysis. However, subsequent investigations ruled out common hemolysis causes. We eventually determined that the patient's cherry-red plasma was most likely caused by other factors in the patient's medical history, including cancer treatment with PV-10 (rose bengal disodium 10%)...

BACKGROUND: In Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis, a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarker panel is commonly interpreted with binary cutoff values. However, these values are not generic and do not reflect the disease continuum. We explored the use of interval-specific likelihood ratios (LRs) and probability-based models for AD using a CSF biomarker panel. METHODS: CSF biomarker (Aβ1-42 , tTau and pTau181 ) data for both a clinical discovery cohort of 241 patients (measured with INNOTEST) and a clinical validation cohort of 129 patients (measured with EUROIMMUN), both including AD and non-AD dementia/cognitive complaints were retrospectively retrieved in a single-center study...

Recessive congenital methemoglobinemia (RCM) is a hereditary autosomal disorder with an extremely low incidence rate. Here, we report a case of methemoglobinemia type I in a patient with congenital persistent cyanosis. The condition was attributed to a novel compound heterozygous mutation in CYB5R3, characterized by elevated methemoglobin levels (13.4 % of total hemoglobin) and undetectable NADH cytochrome b5 reductase (CYB5R3) activity. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) revealed two heterozygous mutations in CYB5R3: a previously reported pathogenic missense mutation c...
