The paper illustrates a difficult case of personal identification of the remains of two construction workers, severely charred and calcined because of very high temperatures caused by an explosion of a high pressure gas pipeline. In both cases, genetic and odontological examinations were conducted for the purpose of victim identification. Genetic tests made it possible to identify the remains of one of the casualties. In the other case, however, identification was impossible on account of complete destruction of the victim's genetic material, which is typical of long-term exposure to extremely high temperatures (similar to cremation)...

Self-strangulation should be cautiously determined following a comprehensive death investigation because the circumstance of strangulation is usually homicide. The deceased was a 33-year-old male who suffered from depression and was found missing from a psychiatric unit while on treatment. The deceased was found the following day in the doctors' car park of the unit. The deceased was in a prone position with a strip of material from the sarong he was wearing round his neck and features of strangulation. Scene investigation and autopsy with the history of psychiatric disease confirmed self-strangulation...

Self-inflicted abdominal injuries are uncommon. Fatal self-inflicted abdominal injury is a rare occurrence, especially as a custodial death. A prisoner under-trial for attempted suicide was in judicial custody and was found unconscious in a pool of blood in the bathroom with cut open abdomen and exposed coils of intestine. The bathroom was found locked from inside and had to be forcibly opened. In spite of immediate hospitalisation and appropriate emergency surgical treatment, he succumbed on the same day. As the person had previously made several futile attempts to commit suicide and was in fact under trial for the crime of attempted suicide (section 309 of Indian Penal Code), the prison authorities had already taken good precautions to prevent access to any type of weapon, instrument, or material that could rekindle the thought of another attempt...

INTRODUCTION: In medicolegal practice, rare cases associated with suicidal, criminal or accidental overdose of insulin are both analytically and forensically challenging. The determination of insulin in post-mortem blood has limited diagnostic value, mainly on account of post-mortem chemical degradation processes (particularly hemolysis), and hence is not useful in medicolegal practice. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aims of the study were: 1) to assess the usefulness of the immunoradiometric method, used in clinical practice, for post-mortem measurement of insulin concentration in the intraocular fluid, 2) to preliminarily evaluate the usefulness of the obtained results for toxicological and medicolegal assessment, and 3) to verify on the basis of our own material the validity of the cited literature data on the effect of hemolysis on the result of insulin level determination in post-mortem blood...

AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the paper is analysis of the impact of immobilization treatment of "less severe" motor organ injuries affecting soft tissues on the position of medical experts and court decisions in crimes against health. We also analysed the attitude of courts to expert opinions and present a proposal for a model of judicial and medical opinion in such cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the study, we analysed judgments of the criminal divisions of common courts, in which the use of medical immobilization of a given part of the body or lack thereof could have an impact on the degree of health impairment determined by the medical expert...

AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to assess the suitability of vitreous humour (VH) for determining alcoholaemia in deceased bodies. The study presents a correlation between the content of ethyl alcohol in vitreous humour and the concentration of ethyl alcohol in venous blood (femoral blood - FB). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study material consisted of blood and vitreous humour samples taken from 62 individuals who died in the period 2012-2016 and whose post-mortem examinations were carried out at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Medical University of Bialystok...

AIM OF THE STUDY: Genetic tests play a crucial role in the crime investigation process and often provide the strongest evidence for case resolution. Although the majority of genetic analyses in the field of criminalistics focus on the human DNA, genetic identification of animals is becoming an increasingly common procedure. Domestic animals, which live around people, may be silent witnesses and even victims of criminal activity. Their typically limited value as evidence in such cases could radically change thanks to the possibility of using animal biological material present at the crime scene...

This paper, as the third of the series, is devoted to gauge ammunition, which may be a problem in ballistic opinions. The paper reviews existing cartridges of the type used in smoothbore weapons (bullet cartridges, non-penetrating, compressed powder, flash-bang, signal, adapter-type, and training cartridges). The paper also presents homemade special cases of gauge ammunition, as well as ammunition used for "peculiar" purposes. The second part of the paper discusses other uses of specialty gauge ammunition, specifically its use as mortar ammunition, propelling charges, pyrotechnic tools, and to start combustion engines...

The author attempts to present Professor Jakliński paying particular attention to what created such a great personality of Polish forensic medicine. Professor Andrzej Jakliński grew up in difficult times, which required a lot of sacrifice, even self-sacrifice and making choices that not always depended on him. That is why this article focuses on Professor Jakliński's childhood and adolescence, his escape from the Russian occupation zone to the German General Government, as well as the battles which he fought within the structures of the Home Army against the Germans and the incident that determined his life and brought him to Lublin...

The psychophysical impairment of drivers caused by psychoactive substances is still a common and important factor in road accidents. While in the case of ethyl alcohol the initial detection of drivers who have consumed alcohol is not a problem due to the widespread use of breathalyzers, other psychoactive substances are a problem. These substances are a group of numerous, variously acting and regularly growing compounds. In this publication, the authors have reviewed the methods used worldwide for the initial detection of psychoactive substances, i...

One of the tasks of the forensic specialist is to attempt to determine the interval between fatal injuries and death, and to assess whether the victim could be physically active before death and, if so, to what extent. There is ongoing research aimed at the application of additional tests (histological, immunohistochemical and others) to answer these questions. Unfortunately, currently used methods have numerous limitations and require further improvements. Moreover, they are not commonly employed in medicolegal practice in Poland...

Incorrect declaration of death is not a frequent situation in medico-legal reports, and such cases are usually of great interest. In this study the authors present a case of improper declaration of death by a physician, despite the absence of early definitive signs of death and without a full medical examination. However, the investigation of the case was dropped, and the conduct of the physician was not assessed by experts.

Suicide behind the steering wheel of a car is a relatively rare discovery, particularly if the cause of death is hanging. Therefore, such events give rise to suspicions that third parties were involved. This paper presents a case of hanging on the threshold of a car door, although what was taken into consideration during the investigation was suicide, death as a result of a road accident, accidental hanging on the seat belt, and even homicide. The cause of death was determined thanks to a very thorough autopsy which also involved the dissection of extremities and was complemented by additional examinations including toxicological tests...

AIM OF THE STUDY: Forensic botany demands tools to verify the value of plant-origin evidence brought into the process of criminal investigation. Molecular biology provides techniques for comparing material from the crime scene with other biological material of evidence. In this paper, we propose a set of seven markers based on Short Tandem Repeats (STRs) loci for DNA profiling of Quercus spp. STR markers of the highest observed heterozygosity were selected, according to available literature...

AIM OF THE STUDY: To present the most popular types of tattoos, their meaning and classification, and to assess the suitability of different forms of tattoos in the process of identification of corpses of unknown identity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The tattoos found on 729 cadavers who underwent post mortem examinations at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Warsaw in the years 2012-2015 were analyzed. The tattoos were photographed and identified in terms of their meaning domain and classified into groups...
