Between 2005 and 2008 cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus bovis was detected in 1485 (0.44%) animals out of 335 436 heads of cattle slaughtered in the Lublin province. This particular cysticercosis was observed each year. In the period 2005-2008 cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus cellulosae was found only in a few pigs (93 cases--0.0059% out of 1 577 370 examined pigs).

Domestic dogs in Poland are attacked by five species of ticks. The present study shows results of research on species of ticks, their intensity and prevalence of infection in the domestic dogs in the district of Rymanów (Subcarpathian province, Poland). The epidemiological and clinical purview of parasite diseases is constantly evolving, mainly due to the changes in human behavior and our environment. Dipylidium caninum is a common intestinal tapeworm of dogs, cats and foxes. However, it occasionally infects also humans. We present a case of D. caninum infection in a 2-year-old child living in the Subcarpathian province. The infection was asymptomatic in the first months. The symptoms of abdominal pains, sleep disorders, loss of appetite, hyperactivity and occasional slimy stools appeared later. In this study total of 266 fecal samples from 242 animals belonging to 113 species kept in the Poznan Zoological Garden were examined for Giardia. The cysts of Giardia were found only in five samples of feces collected from a giant toad (Bufo marinus), tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) and three individuals of cactus mouse (Peromyscus eremicus). Opisthorchid digenean Pseudamphistomum truncatum (Rudolphi, 1819) was isolated from liver bile ducts of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) found dead in the fishing pond complex near Wrocław (Lower Silesia, SW. Poland) in March 2009. Since this is the first record of the parasite in the otter from Poland, the description, biometrical data and figure are presented.

Early detection and correct diagnosis of fungal infection is important for further therapy and prophylaxis. Currently, there are a number of proposals related to rapid diagnostic tests. To those we can include chromogenic media, such as CHROMagar Candida (GRASO). This medium has been developed to differentiate four species of genus Candida. A new species of Ergasilus von Nordmann, 1832 (Copepoda: Ergasilidae) parasitic on the gills of two gobiid fishes Boleophthalmus dussumieri Valenciennes and Bathygobius fuscus (Rüppell, 1930) from Shatt Al-Basrah Canal, Iraq, is described. The new species differs from all its congeners by a combination of character states including the shape of the body, and the structure and armature of the swimming legs.

Prevalence of Fasciola hepatica L. infection among cattle slaughtered in the Lublin province in the years 2005-2008 was evaluated. The study draws its data from annual reports of the Veterinary Inspectorate in Lublin. The results of the study are as follows: the prevalence of Fasciola hepatica infection in the cattle of the Lublin province between 2005 and 2008 amounts to 21.24%.

Cloacotaenia megalops (Nitzsch in Creplin, 1892) is a polyxenic and cosmopolitan tapeworm from the family Hymenolepididae. Candida albicans is a major human fungal pathogen especially as an etiologic agent of opportunistic oral and genital infections. Moreover, C. albicans can be involved in the deep infections and recent evidence suggests that the majority of diseases produced by this pathogen are associated with biofilm growth. Primary infection with Pneumocystis jirovecii in small children may cause inflammation of the respiratory tract which requires hospitalization. Lack of characteristic clinical symptoms makes it impossible to recognize P. jirovecii infections without performing laboratory analyses.
