This study evaluated the incidence of TMDs and their relationship to psychological factors in children ages 6 to 12 years who sought dental treatment at the Ponta Grossa State University. Following ethics committee approval and informed consent, 75 children were included in the study. Exclusion criteria were craniofacial malformations, history of orthodontic treatment and maxillary fractures. TMD severity was classified, using the Fonseca anamnesis index questionnaire, as “no TMD” (control) and “mild,” “moderate” and “severe...

The authors examined a 55-year-old female who had received eight intravenous infusions of a potent bisphosphonate (BP) for metastatic bone disease. A mandibular extraction was subsequently performed. At presentation, infection with suppuration and sequestrum formation were observed in the area of extraction. Both the oncologist and dental practitioner must be made aware that when BPs are going to be administered, dental care should be performed in a timely fashion. Prophylactic measures must be taken by the dentist if dental surgery is required for a patient who has received BP...

The presence of a peg lateral incisor is an example of an autosomal dominant genetic condition that is often associated with several other dental abnormalities, including tooth agenesis. It can occur either unilaterally or bilaterally. Individuals with peg lateral incisors often present with an associated midline diastema, as well as other anterior diastemas. The esthetic restoration of a peg lateral incisor can become a transformative event for an adolescent female patient. This article describes a combined orthodontic and restorative approach to the management of this condition, using a direct composite veneer without tooth reduction...

Chin augmentation, particularly with implants, has become popular in recent years. For the most part, the focus is on the position of the pogonion. The rest of the mid-face, including the maxilla and mandible, are usually ignored. In this article, different scenarios and deformities in the maxillofacial complex that can affect the chin position and shape of its overlying soft tissue are illustrated. It is the author’s view that a number of genioplasty augmentation procedures should be deferred. Discussion of alternative treatments should take place with patients regarding their underlying skeletal issues...

Root fractures are relatively uncommon injuries, but they represent a complex healing pattern due to concomitant injury to the pulp, periodontal ligament, dentin and cementum. This report presents a case of successful treatment of cervical root fracture in a mandibular central incisor with the help of guttapercha and MTA Filapex sealer.

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare disorder characterized by progressive and varying degrees of gingival overgrowth. Oral manifestations vary from minimal to generalized enlargement, and HGF may occur as an isolated disorder or a feature of a syndrome. Unaesthetic appearance and functional impairment due to excessive gingival tissue dictate the need for surgical intervention. This article describes a family with three generations afflicted with a non-syndromic form of HGF with distinctive clinical, histological characteristics...

Titanium root form dental implants are among the major advances modern dentistry can offer patients. Occasionally, in spite of all precautions and best operator intentions, implants are inadvertently placed in positions that do not permit their use for high-quality esthetic dental restorations. Salvaging these implants to permit their use is a challenge for practitioners. Such a situation came to our attention in 2012 after two anterior implants placed in 2009 were found to be in unusable positions. A plan to remove the implants, regraft the area and-after a considerable waiting period-replace the implants in a more "proper" position was considered...

In 2003, New York State enacted legislation that allowed graduating dentists to undertake a one-year postgraduate residency in place of a licensure exam. In 2007, it became mandated throughout the state. This was a paradigm shift for the dental community, and overall opinions varied widely on the topic. On one side, proponents of a board exam claim that the point of dental school is to produce competent practitioners and weed out those who would be dangerous to the practice of dentistry. Contrarily, proponents of residency see the need for further evaluation and assessment of practitioners in order to even understand their levels of competence...

Cervicofacial emphysema (CE) is a rare but potentially serious condition that can arise iatrogenically from dental or surgical procedures. Dental handpieces with fore-exhaust can inject air into tissues at pressures at or greater than 30 psi. Since 1963, there have been approximately 100 case reports in the literature of iatrogenic CE from routine dental procedures. Prompt recognition and treatment are essential; however, many general practitioners may only be familiar with CE from their dental school curriculum...

What appears to be a decorative fad, pursued by people of all ages, is, for the most part, an invasion of the body by poorly trained individuals. Simple-to-complex, the insertion of body jewelry is embarked upon on a whim with little concern for health, including the possibility of infection. Many of those who opt for piercings have outcomes that are unremarkable and relatively trouble free. Others, less fortunate, end up with irreversible scars, serious infections, torn anatomic structures and teeth that are fractured, disfigured or have drifted out of line...
