Leaving surgical instruments in the patient's body is one of the most difficult situations in the professional career of an operator and it can also have severe consequences for the patient. Contrary to world literature, there are no reports of such incidents in Polish publications. Lack of such reports creates an illusion that leaving surgical instruments in the patient's body does not happen in Poland, which is an unsubstantiated thesis. This paper presents two cases of leaving hemostats in the abdominal cavity...

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is considered as the gold standard diagnostic test for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules. It is a cost-effective procedure that provides specific diagnosis rapidly with minimal complications. It plays an important role in the determination of treatment- patients with suspected malignancy diagnosis can be subjected to surgery. On the other hand it can decrease the rate of unnecessary surgeries. AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the correlation, accuracy of fine needle aspirational cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of thyroid lesions with the final histopathologic diagnosis in the surgical specimens...

Mesh erosion and migration are considered the gravest of complications of mesh repairs. To the best of our knowledge, mesh erosion and migration into the stomach following a mesh repair of adult diaphragmatic hernia has yet to be reported in the literature. A case of mesh eroding into the stomach, after a prosthetic repair of an adult diaphragmatic hernia, is presented here because of its rarity.

Tuberculosis(TB) is one of the most common infections affecting the population in the developing countries. With the rising human immunodeficiency(HIV) infection its incidence is on a rise even in the developed countries. Pulmonary TB is the commonest form of infection, However, multiple extrapulmonary sites have also been reported. The spleen is thought to be a rare organ involved in this infection. Various presentations of the splenic TB have been reported in the literature. The definitive diagnosis of this is essentially formulated on the post-splenectomy specimen...

Experimental research on liver transplantation was introduced in Poland by Waldemar Olszewski with his team. It was in 1972. Not until 15 years later, in 1987, did Stanisław Zieliński in Szczecin and Marian Pardela in Katowice make an attempt of transplanting liver in humans. In 1989, the attempt was made by Jacek Pawlak and Marek Krawczyk in Warsaw. The first successful liver transplantation in Poland was performed by Piotr Kaliciński at the Children's Memorial Health Institute, Warsaw. Also, in early 1990s the attempts were made by Jerzy Polański in Warsaw and Piotr Szyber in Wrocław...

OBJECTIVE: At present time, despite the progress made in the treatment of burn injuries, mortality rate among seriously ill patients remains high. The main causes of fatal cases with the extensive deep burns are generalized infectious complications, the major of which is sepsis. According to the authors, from 25 to 85% of deceased in later periods of burn injuries die from sepsis. The frequency and severity of infectious complications in patients with burn injuries requires an accurate diagnosis of infection that will determine the tactics of therapeutic and surgical treatment of such patients (Di Lonardo A...

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is becoming one of the major public health problems. Bariatric procedures are considered the most effective methods of treating this condition but they are costly and entail a high risk of complications. Thus, there is a need to look for better bariatric treatment solutions. One of the newest, highly promising bariatric methods is endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), which is comparably effective to other bariatric procedures in terms of weight loss but at the same time it is much less invasive...

Introduction Adrenal insufficiency is a typical complication after surgical treatment of adrenal tumors, especially after the removal of both adrenal glands. Human beings are not able to survive without adrenal glands and without proper hormonal substitution. Autotransplantation of a fragment of the adrenal gland may prevent this complication. This can be done by transplanting the entire adrenal glands or its fragment, such as the adrenal cortex cells. In the case of adrenal tumors, the entire adrenal gland can not be transplanted...
