Thanks to advances in interventional cardiology technologies the catheter-directed treatment has become recently a viable therapeutic option in the treatment of patients with acute pulmonary embolism at high risk of early mortality. Current transcatheter techniques allow local fibrinolysis or embolectomy with minimal risk of complications. Therefore they can be considered in high risk patients as an alternative to surgical pulmonary embolectomy when systemic thrombolysis is contraindicated or ineffective. They are also considered in patients with intermediate - high risk with a lack of improvement or clinical deterioration despite anticoagulation...

BACKGROUND: Breathing pattern alterations change the variability and the spectral content of the RR intervals (RRi) from electrocardiogram (ECG). However, actually there is no solution on how to record and control participant's breathing without influencing its natural rate and depth in heart rate variability (HRV) studies. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the validity of the Pneumonitor for acquisition of short-term (5 min) RRi in comparison to the reference ECG method for analysis of heart rate (HR) and HRV parameters in the group of pediatric patients with cardiac disease...

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia and places a significant burden on individuals as well as the healthcare system. AF management requires a multidisciplinary approach in which tackling comorbidities is an important aspect. AIMS: To evaluate how multimorbidity is currently assessed and managed and to determine if interdisciplinary care is undertaken. METHODS: A 21-item online survey was undertaken over four weeks as part of the EHRA-PATHS study examining comorbidities in Atrial Fibrillation and distributed to European Heart Rhythm Association members in Europe...

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is characterized by significant mortality in both adults and children. Characteristic of paediatric HF are feeding problems, poor weight gain, exercise intolerance or dyspnoea. These changes are often accompanied by endocrine disorders. The main causes of HF are congenital heart defects (CHD) cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias, myocarditis or heart failure secondary to oncological treatment. Heart transplantation (HTx) is the method of choice for treatment of end-stage HF in paediatric patients...

BACKGROUND: High ankle-brachial index (ABI) has been associated with increased risk of worse outcomes in the general population. Few data on atrial fibrillation (AF) do exist. Experimental data suggest that proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) contribute to vascular calcification but clinical data on this association are lacking. AIMS: We want to investigate the relationship between circulating PCSK9 levels and abnormally high ABI in patients suffering from AF...

BACKGROUND: The evidence of performing minimally invasive coronary artery surgery early after drug eluting stent (DES) implantation due to acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is limited. AIM: The aim of the study is to determine the safety and feasibility of this approach. METHODS: This registry includes 115 (78% male) patients from 2013‒2018, who underwent non-LAD percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) due to ACS with contemporary DES implantation (39% diagnosed with myocardial infarction at baseline), followed by endoscopic atraumatic coronary artery bypass (EACAB) surgery within 180 days, after temporary P2Y₁₂ inhibitor discontinuation...

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular pacing (RVP) can result in pacing-induced cardiomyopathy (PICM). It is unknown whether specific biomarkers reflect differences between His bundle pacing (HBP) and RVP and predict a decrease in left ventricular function during RVP. AIMS: To compare the effect of HBP and RVP on the LV ejection fraction (LVEF) and to study how they affect serum markers of collagen metabolism. METHODS: Ninety-two high-risk PICM patients were randomized to HBP or RVP...

BACKGROUND: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is frequently observed in patients with myocardial infarction (MI). However, the incidence of severe MR in contemporary population is unknown. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide affecting both genders equally. However, in comparison to men, in women it often is underrecognized and undertreated in both the primary and secondary prevention settings. It is clear, that in the healthy population, there are profound differences both anatomically and biochemically between woman and men and this may impact how both groups present when they become ill. Therefore, there are some diseases that affect more frequently in women than in men such us myocardial ischemia or infarction without obstructive coronary disease, Tako-subo syndrome, some atrial arrhythmias or the appearance of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction...
