BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic recurrent systemic inflammatory disease that mainly involves large skin folds. It develops when pilosebaceous units become blocked, leading to the formation of painful nodules, abscesses, fistulas, and scarring. The impact of this disease on quality of life is great. OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence and clinical features of hidradenitis suppurativa in patients treated at Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires and determine the frequency of comorbidities and time to diagnosis in this population...

Repair of distal nasal defects resulting from Mohs micrographic surgery is a challenge, but surgeons can choose from a number of techniques. We present 3 cases in which an east-west flap was used to close the defect. The east-west flap is an easily conceived advancement flap that consists of a superior triangle used to cover the defect and an inferior triangle whose base is located along the advancement line. The flap results in an optimal cosmetic outcome and involves minimum movement of tissue (preserving the nasal architecture) and well-camouflaged suture lines...

In recent years, the growing interest in the role played by vitamin D in skin disease has given rise to the publication of many studies of the relationship between this vitamin and certain skin conditions. As dermatologists, we need to understand, among other aspects, how vitamin D is synthesized and the main sources in humans, as well as plasma levels and the factors that can modify them. Of particular interest are the latest discoveries about the role of vitamin D in skin diseases such as lupus erythematosus, ichthyosis, atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, acne, alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, melanoma, and nonmelanoma skin cancer...

Capillaroscopy produces in vivo images of skin microcirculation. It is a simple, noninvasive tool for analyzing microvascular abnormalities and, as such, can be used in both adults and children. Capillaroscopy has proven useful in many diseases, but it is of particular value in Raynaud phenomenon and other autoimmune diseases. The test is used to analyze capillaroscopic patterns in the nailfold bed of the second to fifth fingers of each hand. A normal capillaroscopic pattern is characterized by the presence of 7 to 11 capillaries in a hairpin shape...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with an estimated prevalence in Spain of 2.3% of the population. Approximately 30% of patients have moderate-to-severe forms. Treatment with biologic agents is proving to be a step forward in the management of the disease, although these treatments are very expensive. The objective of this study was to determine the efficiency, in terms of cost per number needed to treat (NNT), of the biologic drugs available in Spain for the treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer is the most common cause of cutaneous metastases. In our review of the literature, we found no studies that have investigated the prevalence of cutaneous metastases from breast cancer in Latin America or compared survival in relation to the site of cutaneous involvement or the presence of visceral metastases. The aims of this study were to characterize the prevalence and clinical features of cutaneous metastases from breast cancer and analyze survival in relation to site of involvement and the concomitant presence of visceral metastases...

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown a relationship between hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and metabolic syndrome (MS), but no meta-analysis has been restricted to studies that have been adjusted for confounders. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between HS and MS. METHODOLOGY: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies on HS and MS in adults were performed from MEDLINE, SCOPUS, SCIELO, GOOGLE SCHOLAR, SCIENCE DIRECT and LILACS from the inception of the databases to January 2016...

Immunotherapy is emerging as a new and promising treatment for a great variety of tumors, including nonmelanoma skin cancer. Checkpoint inhibitors -antibodies that block proteins that regulate the immune system- mainly target the surface protein CTLA-4 (cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4) and the PD-1/PD-L1 (programmed cell death protein 1/PD-ligand 1) axis. We review the CTLA-4 and PD-1/PD-L1 pathways and current evidence supporting checkpoint inhibitor therapy in the main types of nonmelanoma skin cancer...

Recent scientific evidence and the incorporation of new drugs into the therapeutic arsenal against rosacea have made it necessary to review and update treatment criteria and strategies. To this end, a panel of 15 dermatologists, all experts in rosacea, was formed to share experiences and discuss treatment options, response criteria, and changes to treatment. Based on a critical review of the literature and a discussion of the routine practices of Spanish dermatologists, the panel proposed and debated different options, with consideration of the experience of professionals and the preferences of patients or equality criteria...

REVIEW

Idiopathic facial aseptic granuloma is a pediatric skin condition involving asymptomatic reddish nodules. The etiology and pathogenesis is still under discussion, although the literature tends to place this condition within the spectrum of childhood rosaceas. The clinical course is chronic but benign, and cases have been reported to resolve spontaneously in less than a year. Even though no well-defined treatment has emerged, a conservative approach that avoids aggressive therapies is preferred.
