PURPOSE: Exposure to blue light is thought to be harmful to the retina. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of long-term exposure to narrowband blue light on retinal function in rhesus monkeys. METHODS: Young rhesus monkeys were reared under short-wavelength "blue" light (n = 7; 465 nm, 183 ± 28 lx) on a 12-h light/dark cycle starting at 26 ± 2 days of age. Age-matched control monkeys were reared under broadband "white" light (n = 8; 504 ± 168 lx)...

BACKGROUND: Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis is a group of neurodegenerative disorders with varying visual dysfunction. CLN3 is a subtype which commonly presents with visual decline. Visual symptomatology can be indistinct making early diagnosis difficult. This study reports ocular biomarkers of CLN3 patients to assist clinicians in early diagnosis, disease monitoring, and future therapy. METHODS: Retrospective review of 5 confirmed CLN3 patients in our eye clinic...

PURPOSE: Function and anatomy of the visual system were evaluated in children with abusive head trauma (AHT). The relationships between retinal hemorrhages at presentation were examined with outcome measures. METHODS: Retrospective review of data in children with AHT for 1) visual acuity at last follow-up, 2) visual evoked potentials (VEP) after recovery, 3) diffusion metrics of white matter tracts and grey matter within the occipital lobe on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and 4) patterns of retinal hemorrhages at presentation...

PURPOSE: To describe a case of retinitis pigmentosa and nanophthalmos in a patient with attenuated Hunter's syndrome. METHODS: Fundus photography, total field electroretinogram, ultrasound, computerized visual field examination, biochemical examination and genetic testing were obtained. RESULTS: The fundus exam showed diffuse arteriolar attenuation, optic disc with regular contours, and pigment agglomerates like "bone spicules" in the middle periphery...

PURPOSE: To infer rod phototransduction activation and deactivation characteristics in diabetics who have mild or no clinically-apparent retinopathy. METHODS: Fifteen non-diabetic controls, 15 diabetics with no clinically-apparent diabetic retinopathy (NDR), and 15 diabetics with mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (MDR) participated. Dark-adapted flash electroretinograms (3.2 to 4.4 log scot td-s) were recorded to assess rod activation. The a-waves were fit with a Gaussian model to derive Rmp3 (maximum photoreceptor response amplitude) and S (phototransduction sensitivity)...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Medication-induced ocular toxicity is an important consideration in the differential diagnosis of unexplained visual disturbance. We present a case of visual disturbance after starting treatment with glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (Mavyret), a therapy for Hepatitis C virus approved by the FDA in 2017. METHODS: A 50-year-old male with no significant ocular history experienced bilateral visual disturbance, including visual field and acuity loss, shortly after initiating treatment with Mavyret for Hepatitis C...

PURPOSE: To determine whether short-latency changes in multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) observed in experimental glaucoma (EG) are secondary solely to retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss or whether there is a separate contribution from elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). METHODS: Prior to operative procedures, a series of baseline mfERGs were recorded from six rhesus macaques using a 241-element unstretched stimulus. Animals then underwent hemiretinal endodiathermy axotomy (HEA) by placing burns along the inferior 180° of the optic nerve margin in the right eye (OD)...

PURPOSE: Frequency-domain measures were applied to characterize neural deficits in individuals with schizophrenia using transient visual evoked potentials (tVEP). These measures were compared with conventional time-domain measures to elucidate underlying neurophysiological mechanisms and examine the value of frequency analysis. METHODS: Four frequency bands of activity identified in previous work were explored with respect to magnitude (spectral power), timing (phase), a combined measure, magnitude-squared coherence (MSC), and compared to amplitudes and times of prominent deflections in the response...

PURPOSE: To report an unexpectedly asymmetric, progressive nutritional optic neuropathy associated with vitamin A deficient optic canal hyperostosis in a 15-year-old female with a long history of a restricted diet. METHODS: We performed comprehensive ophthalmic assessments in a fifteen-year-old female with a long history of restricted eating who presented with suspected nutritional optic neuropathy, predominantly affecting the right eye vision. RESULTS: A review of computerised tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed bilateral optic canal hyperostosis likely associated with vitamin A deficiency...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of visual electrodiagnostic testing in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) despite improved accessibility to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: The records from 39 children (78 eyes, 15 boys, 24 girls, average age at last visit of 11.5 ± 4.3 years, average follow-up time of 7.8 ± 3.9 years) with genetically confirmed NF1 were retrospectively analysed. They all underwent a thorough ophthalmological investigation, including age-appropriate visual acuity testing, anterior segment evaluation for Lisch nodules and a dilated fundus examination...

INTRODUCTION: Visual electrophysiology tests require the use of precise and calibrated visual display units (VDUs). Existing VDUs for presenting structured stimuli are now mostly obsolete, with modern solutions limited or unsuitable for clinical testing. Digital light processing (DLP) laser projectors have recently become commercially available and this study aimed to assess their suitability as VDUs for visual electrophysiology testing. METHODS: This study consisted of two sections...

INTRODUCTION: Mutations in the peripherin-2 gene (PRPH2) are a common cause of inherited retinal dystrophies well known for their phenotypic diversity. We describe a novel presentation of the c.623G > A; p.(Gly208Asp) variant in association with cone-rod dystrophy and reduced penetrance. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 39-year-old man presents with a history of decreased visual acuity, photophobia, and dyschromatopsia. Fundus examination was largely unremarkable while spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) demonstrated diffuse granularity at the ellipsoid zone...

PURPOSE: Vitamin A plays a crucial role in rod phototransduction, with deficient levels manifesting as night blindness. Animal models have demonstrated bone dysplasia in the setting of hypovitaminosis A. We present a rare case of bony overgrowth leading to bilateral compressive optic neuropathy, combined with outer retinopathy, in a paediatric patient secondary to isolated vitamin A deficiency. METHODS: A single case report was conducted from Toronto, Canada. RESULTS: A 12-year-old boy with known autism spectrum disorder presented with a 9-month history of progressive painless vision loss...

BACKGROUND: Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare autosomal recessive ciliopathy characterized by 6 primary features of rod-cone dystrophy, central obesity, polydactyly, cognitive impairment, hypogonadism and/or genitourinary malformations, and kidney abnormalities. At least 21 genes associated with BBS have been reported. To date, BBS associated with BBS12 variants has never been described in the Japanese population. We report a Japanese infant female with BBS with compound heterozygous BBS12 variants...

OBJECTIVE: To compare mfERG recordings with the Dawson-Trick-Litzkow (DTL) and gold cup skin electrode in healthy young and old adults and to test the sensitivity of both electrodes to age-related changes in the responses. METHODS: Twenty participants aged 20-27 years ("young") and 20 participants aged 60-75 ("old") with a visual acuity of ≤ 0 logMAR were included. The mfERG responses were recorded simultaneously using DTL and skin electrodes...
