BACKGROUND: This study aimed to uncover the diagnostic value of circRNA (Circ)_0051386 in acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and its predictive value for the occurrence of adverse major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). METHODS: This study included 166 patients with STEMI and 83 health donors. The expression levels of serum Circ_0051386 in these participants were quantified using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR)...

AIM: Left atrial (LA) strain, a novel marker of LA function, reliably predicts diastolic dysfunction. SGLT2 inhibitors improve heart failure outcomes, but limited data exists regarding their use in the immediate aftermath of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We studied the effect of empagliflozin on LA strain in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and ACS. METHODS: Patients with ACS and T2D were identified and empagliflozin was initiated in eligible patients prior to discharge...

BACKGROUND: Conduction system disorders represent a frequent complication in patients undergoing surgical (surgical aortic valve replacement, SAVR) or percutaneous (transcatheter aortic valve implantation, TAVI) aortic valve replacement. The purpose of this survey was to evaluate experienced operators approach in this clinical condition. METHODS: This survey was independently conducted by the Italian Association of Arrhythmology and Cardiac Pacing (AIAC) and it consisted of 24 questions regarding the respondents' profile, the characteristics of participating centres, and conduction disease management in different scenarios...

Purpose: Exercise intolerance and dyspnoea are clinical symptoms in both heart failure (HF) reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which are suggested to be associated with musculoskeletal dysfunction. We tested the hypothesis that HFrEF + COPD patients would present lower muscle strength and greater fatigue compared to compared to the COPD group. Methods: We included 25 patients with HFrEF + COPD (100% male, age 67.8 ± 6...

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a suitable treatment for patients with severe aortic stenosis and severely increased operative risk. There is need for a better preoperative risk assessment for TAVI candidates. AIM: To determine whether Tumour necrosis factor-alfa (TNFα) is an independent predictor of survival 500 days after TAVI. METHODS: Sixty patients undergoing TAVI were enrolled in the study. TNFα was determined...

BACKGROUND: It is thought that ChatGPT, an advanced language model developed by OpenAI, may in the future serve as an AI-assisted decision support tool in medicine. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy of ChatGPT's recommendations on medical questions related to common cardiac symptoms or conditions. METHODS: We tested ChatGPT's ability to address medical questions in two ways. First, we assessed its accuracy in correctly answering cardiovascular trivia questions ( n  = 50), based on quizzes for medical professionals...

BACKGROUND: We aimed to share our methods and experience of persistent AF ablation without a circular mapping catheter (CMC), thereby avoiding femoral venous and transseptal punctures, decreasing the cost of the procedure, and possibly reducing the duration of the procedure and fluoroscopy time. METHODS: We report our experience with 261 persistent AF ablations performed without a CMC over the past 3 years. RESULTS: The procedures were performed with no apparent loss of efficacy or safety...

We present a case of a 79-year-old man on apixaban for atrial fibrillation who suffered multiple ischaemic strokes and was found to have mobile structures attached to his pacemaker lead on transesophageal echocardiography. Based on the Modified Duke Criteria, there was no evidence of infectious endocarditis. Since there were no signs of a patent foramen ovale or arteriovenous malformations in the lungs, the mobile structures probably were not the cause of the ischaemic strokes. After the visualisation of the mobile structures, apixaban was switched to dabigatran with a clear decrease in the size of the structures...

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate prognostic implications of coronary slow flow (CSF) and angiography-derived index of microcirculatory resistance (caIMR) in patients with angina and normal coronary arteries. METHODS: A total of 582 patients were enrolled with angiographically normal coronary arteries. caIMR was calculated using a commercial software. Patients were followed up for a median of 45 months. The primary endpoint was defined as major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) comprising death, myocardial infarction and readmission for angina or heart failure...
