Medical adhesive tapes are commonly recommended for the prevention of friction blisters during hiking and military marches. The aim of this paper is to report on the results of investigations into an outbreak of tape-related foot dermatitis in 26 military conscripts following continuous use of medical adhesive tapes for several days during a field exercise. Patch tests were performed using baseline series and aimed testing was performed with colophonium-related substances and different medical adhesive tapes...

Hailey-Hailey disease is a rare hereditary skin disease caused by mutations in the ATP2C1 gene encoding the secretory pathway Ca2+/Mn2+-ATPase 1 (SPCA1) protein. Extracutaneous manifestations of Hailey-Hailey disease are plausible but still largely unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the association between Hailey-Hailey disease and diabetes. A population-based cohort study of 347 individuals with Hailey-Hailey  disease was performed to assess the risks of type 1  diabetes and type 2 diabetes, using Swedish nationwide registries...

Cryo-electron microscopy of vitreous sections allows for investigation directly in situ of the molecular architecture of skin. Recently, this technique has contributed to the elucidation of the molecular organization of the skin's permeability barrier and its stepwise formation process. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the procedure for cryo-electron microscopy of vitreous sections, its analysis using atomic detail molecular dynamics modelling and electron microscopy simulation, and its application in the investigation of the barrier structure and formation process of the skin...

Whether response to an interleukin (IL-17) inhibitor is different in patients with previous exposure to an IL-17 inhibitor compared with patients with exposure to biologics with other cytokine targets remains to be elucidated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to  assess whether previous exposure to an IL-17A inhibitor was associated with worse response than exposure to (an)other biologic(s). All patients in the DERMBIO register treated with an IL-17A inhibitor (secukinumab or ixekizumab) were included...

Despite emerging evidence and advances in the management of atopic dermatitis there a lack of consensus regarding the diagnostic criteria, therapeutic approach, method to assess severity, and patient follow-up for this condition. An expert consensus study was conducted to provide recommendations on the management of patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. The study used Delphi-like methodology based on a literature review, a summary of the scientific evidence, and a 2-round survey. The agreement of 60 panellists on 21 statements was evaluated...

Actinic keratosis is a lesion that develops in sun-exposed areas of the skin and is considered to be a precancerous condition or an early in situ squamous cell carcinoma. Treatment of actinic keratosis is important for reducing skin cancer risk, with treatment choice based on patient-, lesion- and treatment-related considerations. Of the topical treatments used for field-directed therapy, those containing 5-fluorouracil are among the most effective and widely prescribed. The most recently developed topical 5-fluorouracil preparation (Tolak®; Pierre Fabre, France) contains 4% 5-fluorouracil in an aqueous cream...

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting patients of reproductive age. Although HS shares risk factors with male infertility, only 1 epidemiological study has evaluated this association. To further evaluate this potential association, findings on semen and hormonal analysis, testicular ultrasound, and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-15) were compared between 28 men attending a tertiary HS clinic during the period April 2019 to April 2021, and 44 healthy controls, spouses of infertile women undergoing semen evaluation before in vitro fertilization...

Dermatitis herpetiformis has been investigated in the past; however, only a limited number of studies have reported its incidence based on validated nationwide population-based registries. To address this gap, the aims of this study are to estimate the incidence of dermatitis herpetiformis in Sweden and to validate the National Patient Register (NPR) for diagnosis of dermatitis herpetiformis. A population-based open cohort study was conducted, including all patients diagnosed with dermatitis herpetiformis (International Classification of Diseases 10th revision; ICD-10 code L13...

Several non-randomized clinical trials and retrospective studies have demonstrated encouraging efficacy and well-tolerated safety of tofacitinib in the treatment of alopecia areata. However, there are scarce data on a large cohort of patients with alopecia areata in long-term real-world practice. This single-centre, retrospective, observational cohort study included 126 patients with alopecia areata treated with tofacitinib between February 2021 and December 2022. The aims of this study are to evaluate drug survival, effectiveness and safety of tofacitinib for treatment of alopecia areata, and to identify potential factors influencing long-term outcomes...
