Intramuscular capillary-type haemangiomas (ICTH) are rare vascular anomalies that can easily be misdiagnosed as other entities. A systematic review was performed of all cases of ICTH in the literature since its first description in 1972. An adjudication committee reviewed cases to include only ICTHs. Among 1,143 reports screened, 43 were included, involving 75 patients. The most frequent differential diagnosis was intramuscular venous malformations. The mean age of patients at diagnosis was 21.2 years. ICTH was mainly described as a gradually increasing mass (81...

Facial and genital psoriasis impairs quality of life and is challenging to treat because of increased percutaneous penetration and, consequently, increased risk of adverse effects. Topical calcineurin inhibitors are recognized as a valid off-label treatment for these sensitive skin areas, but data on safety and efficacy are limited. This systematic review of the literature included 24 of 3,322 studies (5 randomized controlled trials, 9 open-label studies, 2 case series and 8 case reports). All studies demonstrated positive efficacy; 11 studies found statistically significant reductions in psoriasis severity...

Current research on the malignancy rate and spectrum of malignancies in patients with bullous pemphigoid is contradictory. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence and spectrum of malignancy in patients with bullous pemphigoid and to compare demographic, clinical, therapeutic and outcome data between bullous pemphigoid patients with and without malignancy. This retrospective cohort study enrolled 335 patients (194 women and 141 men; mean age at diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid 77.5 ± 12 years) followed up at an Israeli tertiary centre between January 2009 and December 2019: 107 (32%) had malignancy and 228 (68%) did not...

Therapeutic options for psoriasis vulgaris have changed during recent decades with the introduction of biologics. Few nationwide studies are available on psoriasis treatment patterns, and those from Finland predate the use of biologics. The aim of this retrospective, population-based registry study was to identify patients with psoriasis vulgaris and their treatment patterns in the secondary care setting in Finland. The study cohort included 41,456 adults with a diagnosis of psoriasis vulgaris in the public secondary healthcare setting from 2012 through 2018...

Self-assessment of general health status has a significant influence on patient-related outcomes. The aims of this study were to investigate and compare the level of agreement between patients' and dermatologists' assessments of the severity of chronic hand eczema. From the German registry "German Chronic Hand Eczema Patient Long-Term Management Registry" (CARPE), 1,281 pairs of patients with chronic hand eczema and their dermatologists were included. Of these, 788 pairs served as a comparison 2 years after baseline...

Melanoma is a highly metastatic tumour originating from neural crest-derived melanocytes. The aim of this study was to analyse the expression of neuron navigator 3 (NAV3) in relation to membrane type-1 matrix metalloproteinase MMP14, a major regulator of invasion, in 40 primary melanomas, 15 benign naevi and 2 melanoma cell lines. NAV3 copy number changes were found in 18/27 (67%) primary melanomas, so that deletions dominated (16/27 of samples, 59%). NAV3 protein was found to be localized at the leading edge of migrating melanoma cells in vitro...

The majority of registry studies on atopic dermatitis include only patients and diagnoses from specialized healthcare. The aim of this retrospective, real-world cohort study was to evaluate the effect of atopic dermatitis severity on comorbidities and total morbidity, with comprehensive data from both primary and specialty healthcare registries covering the entire Finnish adult population. In total, 124,038 patients were identified (median age 46 years; 68% female) and stratified by disease severity. All regression analyses (median follow-up 7...

Data concerning the economic and humanistic burden in patients with paediatric atopic dermatitis (AD) and their families are scarce. This retrospective study investigated these burdens in paediatric patients with AD using maintenance treatment with topical corticosteroids and/or conventional systemic immunosuppressants. Patient-reported outcomes regarding quality of life, AD severity, and parental work-related impairment were completed at inclusion. Data on healthcare resource utilization and medication prescription were collected retrospectively over the previous 12 months...

Data on the impact of paediatric atopic dermatitis on parental sleep are scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of paediatric atopic dermatitis on the quality of parents' sleep. This cross-sectional study included parents of patients with atopic dermatitis and parents of healthy children who completed validated Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaires. The study and control groups were compared, as were results for mild and moderate atopic dermatitis with severe atopic dermatitis, mothers and fathers, and different ethnic groups...

The aim of this multi-centre French retrospective study was to identify severe, i.e. crusted and profuse, scabies patients. Records were retrieved from 22 Dermatology or Infectious Diseases departments in the Ile-de-France from January 2009 to January 2015 to characterize epidemiology, demography, diagnosis, contributing factors, treatment features, and outcomes in severe scabies. A total of 95 inpatients (57 crusted and 38 profuse) were included. A higher number of cases was observed among elderly patients (>75 years), mostly living in institutions...

Chronic pruritus is an unpleasant sensory perception that negatively affects quality of life and is common among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Current antipruritic therapies are insufficiently effective. Thus, the mediation of diabetic pruritus by histamine-independent pathways is likely. The aim of this study was to identify possible mediators responsible for diabetic pruritus. A total of 87 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were analysed, of whom 59 had pruritus and 28 did not. The 2 groups were assessed for baseline demographics, serum biochemistry parameters, cytokines, and chemokines...
