INTRODUCTION: There are substantial differences in speech recognition performance of adult cochlear implant (CI) recipients. This study investigated the effects of cognitive function on speech recognition in CI recipients. METHODS: The verbal working memory of 36 adults with unilateral CIs was tested using digit span tests. Attention and inhibition abilities were assessed by using the Stroop test (both congruent and incongruent tasks). Speech recognition in noise was measured using the Turkish matrix test...

INTRODUCTION: Free jejunal flap (FJF) reconstruction is a standard procedure for pharyngeal and cervical esophageal defects resulting from head and neck cancer resection. However, improvements in patients' quality of life after surgery require a further statistical approach. METHODS: An observational, retrospective, multivariate analysis was designed to report the incidence of postoperative complications and their association with clinical factors in 101 patients who underwent total pharyngo-laryngo-esophagectomy and FJF reconstruction for head and neck cancer at a university hospital between January 2007 and December 2020...

BACKGROUND: Definitions are essential for effective communication and discourse, particularly in science. They allow the shared understanding of a thought or idea, generalization of knowledge, and comparison across scientific investigation. The current terms describing olfactory dysfunction are vague and overlapping. SUMMARY: As a group of clinical olfactory researchers, we propose the standardization of the terms "dysosmia," "anosmia," "hyposmia," "normosmia," "hyperosmia," "olfactory intolerance," "parosmia," and "phantosmia" (or "olfactory hallucination") in olfaction-related communication, with specific definitions in this text...

INTRODUCTION: The persistent lack of racial and ethnic diversity within the field of otolaryngology calls for an analysis of potential bias within the residency application system. Letters of recommendation (LORs) and personal statements (PSs) are the most important subjective application constituents. This subjectivity predisposes these components to implicit bias. In applications to various surgical subspecialties, prior linguistic studies assessing bias in reviews of LOR show race-based differences...

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common inflammatory disease in otolaryngology, mainly manifested as nasal congestion, nasal discharge, facial pain/pressure, and smell disorder. CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), an important phenotype of CRS, has a high recurrence rate even after receiving corticosteroids and/or functional endoscopic sinus surgery. In recent years, clinicians have focused on the application of biological agents in CRSwNP. However, it has not reached a consensus on the timing and selection of biologics for the treatment of CRS so far...

Cholesterol granuloma of the petrous bone is a foreign body giant cell reaction to cholesterol deposits with symptoms including hearing loss, vestibular dysfunction, and cranial nerve deficit as a result of cystic mass compression. Surgical treatment is often difficult to plan due to limited access to the lesion and possible injury to surrounding structures. We report on a case of petrous apex cholesterol granuloma drainage through an infracochlear approach. A 27-year-old female patient presented with acute diplopia due to left-sided abducens paralysis...

Nasal septal perforation is a full-thickness defect of the nasal septum. There are many described etiologies of nasal septal perforation, including trauma, infectious, neoplastic, iatrogenic, and autoimmune. Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a common and potentially life-threatening complication that can occur after an allogenic transplant. GVHD can result in the development of autoantibodies that lead to granulomatous inflammation with necrotizing vasculitis, causing perforation of the nasal septum. In this report, we describe a patient with nasal septal perforation secondary to GVHD and hope to provide novel insights into the association of GVHD and nasal septal perforation...

INTRODUCTION: External auditory canal cholesteatoma (EACC) is a rare disease, with an estimated incidence of approximately 1:1,000 adult and 1.6:1,000 pediatric otologic patients. Systematic studies of chronic ear disease and taste alteration prior to surgery are rare; in fact, there are no such studies for EACCs. Therefore, we describe chorda tympani nerve (CTN) dysfunction and the related clinical consequences in EACC patients. METHODS/STUDY DESIGN: Between 1992 and 2021, we retrospectively analyzed the symptoms, signs, and radiological and intraoperative descriptions of CTN involvement in 73 patients...

INTRODUCTION: The main determinant in deciding on stapes surgery in patients with otosclerosis is the degree of hearing loss, specifically the size of the preoperative air-bone gap (ABG). The debate over the minimum ABG centers on the risk-to-benefit ratio of stapes surgery in patients with small ABG (sABG). The aim of this study was to measure the audiological outcomes and self-assessed satisfaction in a group of otosclerosis patients with an sABG who underwent stapedotomy. METHODS: There were 83 patients with preoperative sABG ≤25 dB HL (mean of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 4,000 Hz) included in this study...

INTRODUCTION: Management of the neck in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) is essential to oncologic control and survival. The rates of lymph node metastasis (LNM) vary based on oral cavity tumor site and stage and influence treatment decisions. The aim of this paper was to describe clinical LNM for different tumor subsites and stages of surgically managed OCSCC. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 25,846 surgically managed OCSCC patients from the National Cancer Database (NCDB) stratified by tumor subsite and clinical T-stage...
