This study conducts experimental and numerical simulations and analyzes the effects of the air bubble barrier (ABB) on the oil spill spread prevention efficiency regarding the varying aperture diameter, air discharge, and pollutant type. In a computational fluid dynamics simulation, a multiphase flow is studied using the finite volume method with the volume of fluid technique in the Star CCM+ software. The pipe generating air bubbles is fixed at the bottom of the tank at 1.8 m from the side of the experimental setup...

This study investigated the sources of sedimentary organic matter (OM) in the Yangtze River estuary (YRE), using multiple biomarkers. The results of stable carbon isotope (δ13 C) and total organic carbon to nitrogen ratio (TOC/TN) suggests the contribution of marine-derived OM significantly increased seawards, while fatty acid (FA) composition provides more specific information on OM sources. In total, 30 components of FAs were identified at the studied 17 sites, which mainly composed of phytoplankton FA, followed by ubiquitous FA and bacterial FA, while terrestrial FA contributed less to the total FAs...

The contents of metals, total carbon, total nitrogen (TN), total organic carbon (TOC), and stable isotope composition (δ13 Corg and δ15 N) of sediment organic matter (SOM) were investigated to explore the sources and spatial distribution of metals and SOM in the surface sediments (Kaohsiung Port, Taiwan). Results showed that TOC and metals in estuarine sediments are high, gradually decreasing toward the port entrances. The δ13 Corg , δ15 N, and TOC/TN ratios indicate that SOM comes mainly from terrestrial sources...

The study evaluates metal concentrations, distributions, contamination, risk, sources, fractionation, and mobility in Nabq Protectorate sediments, revealing a metal content order of Fe, Mn, Pb, Ni, and Cd. Metals are dominated by residual fractions, with Cd (83.70 %) > Ni (82.98 %) > Pb (80.96 %) > Fe (80.31 %) > Mn (76.65 %) reflecting the natural sources of investigated metals. Mn (23.35 %) was the most abundant mobile metal, and the sediments of the protectorate had low toxicity and moderate risk according to the synergistic indices (1 ≤ mRAC<10 and ERM; 5-10)...

Ocean acidification (OA) is a global environmental concern, and submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a potentially process that enhances OA. This review summarizes the relationship between two types of constituents carried by SGD into China's seawater and OA. 1) Current research predominantly concentrates on constituent fluxes from SGD, neglecting its ecological impacts on carbon and nutrients budgets, as well as the mechanisms between carbon and nutrients. 2) Uncertainties persist in SGD research methods and acidification characterization...

The Canary Archipelago is a group of volcanic islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean with high marine biodiversity. This archipelago intercepts the Canary Current, the easternmost branch of the Azores Current in the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre, which brings large amounts of litter from remote sources via oceanic transportation. It is, therefore, particularly vulnerable to marine plastic pollution. Here, we present a review of the available studies on mesoplastics and microplastics in the Canary Islands over the last decade to evaluate the level and distribution of plastic pollution in this archipelago...

Nutrients directly control the level of primary productivity and are crucial for the stability of marine ecosystems. Focusing on the survey results in August 2020 of the Yangtze River Estuary, this study elucidated the distribution characteristics and controlling factors of three nutrients: NO3 -N, PO4 -P, SiO3 -Si. The results showed that the concentrations of NO3 -N, PO4 -P, SiO3 -Si in the study area were generally higher near the shore than far shore, with average concentrations of 11.40, 0.70, and 23.73 μmol/L, respectively...

The kleptoparasitic pea crab Zaops ostreum lives within the gills of bivalves, including the economically important eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica. Previous research along the east coast of central Florida has found an average of 2.3 pieces of plastic per oyster. The goals of our research were to determine if filter-feeding oysters transfer microfibers to Z. ostreum via the crab: 1) actively consuming plastic particles, or 2) passively becoming entangled in microfibers. Our results show that both occur...

Recently, there has been a notable rise in social and scientific interest regarding microplastic pollution in coasts where waves significantly influence flow patterns and material transport. This study explores typical short-term movement of buoyant microplastics driven by surf zone processes including wave transformation, breaking, and orbital motion. To track microplastics, Lagrangian Particle Tracking Model (PTM) coupled with Eulerian wave-current interaction model appropriate for coastal hydrodynamics was used...

Lipophilic phycotoxins (LPTs) and domoic acid (DA) in Antarctic seawater, as well as parts of the South Pacific and the Southern Indian Oceans were systematically investigated. DA and six LPTs, namely pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2), okadaic acid (OA), yessotoxin (YTX), homo-yessotoxin (h-YTX), 13-desmethyl spirolide C (SPX1), and gymnodimine (GYM), were detected. PTX2, as the dominant LPTs, was widely distributed in seawater surrounding Antarctica, whereas OA, YTX, and h-YTX were irregularly distributed across the region...

Since 2011, the Caribbean coasts have unprecedented stranding of a pelagic brown macroalgae Sargassum inducing damages for coastal ecosystems and economy. This study evaluated the temporal fluctuations of metallic trace elements (MTE) in Sargassum freshly arrived on the Caribbean coast. From May 2020 to September 2021, 12 floating samples of three morphotypes (S. fluitans III and S. natans I and VIII) were regularly collected in the Petit Cul-de-Sac Marin (Guadeloupe, French West Indies). Measured concentrations of 28 metal(loid)s trace elements reveal i) an absence of seasonal patterns in MTE concentrations except for metals Fe and Al during 2020 summer ii) a regular and high As content during the entire survey iii) a similar trend of contamination for each morphotype...

Emerging pollutants are hazardous to the ecological environment and human health, and these issues have attracted increasing attention from scholars. In the current study, the Taiwan Strait is long and narrow, highly influenced by terrestrial domains, and frequently disturbed by human activities. Conversely, the Luzon Strait is an open sea far from the shore, and the impact of human activities on it is minimal. The description of antibiotics in two different types of seas revealed that contaminants were most commonly detected in both straits...

The Huelva estuary is formed by the common mouths of the Odiel and Tinto Rivers, and inside this ecosystem is the biosphere reserve of the Odiel saltmarshes. This ecosystem has been historically affected by acid mine drainage (AMD) and by releases of pollutants from five phosphoric acid industrial plants and phosphogypsum (PG) waste stacks located in the area. This study carried out a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of the biosphere reserve of the Odiel saltmarshes. To this end, it was necessary to find a suitable sedimentary background (Piedras River in our case)...

Coastal environments, essential for about half of the world's population living near coastlines, face severe threats from human-induced activities such as intensified urbanization, aggressive development, and particularly, coastal sewage pollution. This type of pollution, comprising untreated sewage discharging nutrients, pathogens, heavy metals, microplastics, and organic compounds, significantly endangers these ecosystems. The issue of sewage in coastal areas is complex, influenced by factors like inadequate sewage systems, septic tanks, industrial and agricultural runoff, and natural processes like coastal erosion, further complicated by oceanic dynamics like tides and currents...
