Susan E Lederer, Susan C Lawrence
By the mid-1950s, formal body donation programs began to supplant the decades-long reliance on the anatomy acts that made the bodies of the indigent and unclaimed available for medical education and research. By the mid-1980s, nearly all American medical schools relied on voluntary anatomical gifts of dead bodies. Throughout the nineteenth century, a handful of Americans requested through wills, letters, and suicide notes that their corpses be given to doctors and medical schools. The dramatic expansion of American newspapers after the Civil War helped establish bequeathing one's body as an available, albeit eccentric, afterlife...

JOURNAL ARTICLE
Catherine Mas
Turning to the case of "falling-out" in Miami, this paper locates a historical context for the incorporation of culture into medical practice. In the 1970s, after playing a leading role in the organization of medical anthropology, Hazel Weidman uncovered a condition that Miami residents called "falling-out." It was characterized by sudden collapse in situations of stress, followed by a state of semiconsciousness-and it seemed to affect only individuals of African American or Afro-Caribbean descent. Observing patients' routine mismanagement by the medical system, Weidman used the condition to advocate for greater cultural awareness among health professionals...

Founded in 1957 by a group of elite British and American surgeons, the James IV Association of Surgeons is an international organization that "promotes communication among surgeons across the globe." Every year since 1961, the association has funded trips for several "surgical travellers" to encourage "exchange and camaraderie between surgical communities." This article uses the association's archive to explore the social lives, professional identities, and affective experiences of the men and women who populated the "surgical world" of Britain and North America in the mid-twentieth century...

Anita Guerrini
In Western Europe between 1500 and 1700 the human skeleton became an object: a scientific object, a natural object, an artistic object, an artisanal object, independent of its bodily origins yet retaining a troubling moral status. The act of making a skeleton created a scientific object that also had aesthetic value, with qualities of authenticity, accuracy, and whiteness. Beginning with Vesalius, many anatomists included instructions on how to make a skeleton in their anatomical texts, and many more taught their students how to do this...

JOURNAL ARTICLE
Yu Hoki
This article addresses the practical aspect of medieval Arabic medicine by examining ophthalmological fragments of the Cairo Genizah, written between the tenth and thirteenth centuries. This article deals with two issues: (1) the logic behind the actual preparation of compound medicines and (2) the logic behind the entire treatment process. The first issue is examined by investigating recipes of eye medicines for leucoma (bayāḍ) recorded in genizah notebooks. By examining the four primary qualities of each ingredient, I clarify how the actual prescription of compound medicines has been grounded in the four-quality theory...
