JOURNAL ARTICLE
Injae Jung, Ford M Lannan, Aeja Weiss, Sunghun Cho
Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB), or ingrown hairs, is a common skin condition of the face and neck caused by shaving in predisposed individuals who have naturally curly hair. It uniquely affects a disproportionate number of US service members with African ancestry who must abide by strict uniform grooming standards across the entire military. The main rationale behind this policy is that a beard can prevent a proper seal when using breathing protection devices such as gas masks or N95 respirators. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and ever-looming overseas conflicts, dermatologists who treat service members should be aware of the separate yet related guidelines to treat PFB that each military branch follows...

Complex medical dermatology fellowships currently are offered at 5 institutions in the United States. The decision to pursue this fellowship is individualized; however, additional training can prove to be beneficial when practicing in an environment with medically challenging patient populations.

JOURNAL ARTICLE
Penny Lane Huebsch, Dirk M Elston
The sticktight flea (Echidnophaga gallinacea), a carrier of plague (Yersinia pestis), rickettsial infections, and other diseases, can be found in warm climates. The flea attaches to a host by embedding its head in the skin for days at a time. Most human infestations occur in individuals who handle infested animals. The sticktight flea can cause delayed erythema of the skin surrounding the embedded head. Common treatments include oral or topical antihistamines or a topical corticosteroid applied to the affected area...

REVIEW
Donglin Zhang, Charlotte LaSenna, Bridget E Shields
Telogen effluvium (TE) is a common clinical consequence of medication-related alopecia. The inciting cause of TE may be difficult to identify due to delays in clinically apparent hair loss. Because medication-induced TE is a nonscarring alopecia that typically is reversible, appropriate management requires identification of the underlying triggering medication and cessation of it, if possible. In part 1 of this series, we review the existing literature on medication-induced TE with a focus on systemic retinoids, antifungal agents, and psychotropic medications...

JOURNAL ARTICLE

In low-resource settings, dermatologists may not have the preferred tools needed to evaluate a patient or perform a procedure. Commonplace affordable supplies can be substituted when needed. We describe the use of a blood glucose testing lancet and a paper clip for milia extraction.

REVIEW
Tyler Long, Austin Dunn, Dane Hill, Leonard H Goldberg, Russel Akin
Toluidine blue (TB) is a metachromatic dye used as a stain in frozen sections in Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS). The current literature on the use of TB is sparse and generally qualitative in nature. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize and evaluate the existing literature analyzing TB use in MMS. The PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched for relevant studies published before December 1, 2019. Studies that analyzed the use of TB in frozen sections applicable to MMS were included. A total of 25 articles were reviewed, of which 12 fit the inclusion criteria...

Acrylates are synthetic thermoplastic resins used in numerous industries since their discovery in the mid-19th century. Known for their versatility in formulating various consumer, health care, and industrial products, acrylates also have come under scrutiny for their potential to cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Allergic contact dermatitis to acrylates previously was largely occupational in nature, but the expanded use of acrylates in products ranging from nail cosmetics to medical devices has increasingly brought this allergy to the general population...
