BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Accreditation standards for MD- and DO-granting institutions require medical schools to recruit a diverse student body and educate students about diverse groups of patients. The minority tax is a summary of responsibilities assigned to racial and ethnic underrepresented faculty to achieve diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical institutions in addition to their typical academic workload. This article provides a narrative review of medical students' experiences of the minority tax and recommendations on how medical educators can support an equitable learning environment by eliminating the minority tax...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous research has described a waning interest among third-year students to employ empathetic practice along with decreased opportunity to develop empathic communication skills. In this study we sought to address this decline using the skill of noticing (ie, the capacity to attune to specific aspects of practice and interactions) as an intervention for third-year medical students. METHODS: We designed a qualitative study to address the following research question: How can a focused noticing tool encourage empathetic moments during the patient interview for third-year medical students? Eight third-year medical students used the Social Emotional Noticing Tool (SENT) during their 4-week family medicine rotation, then joined a focus group to share their experiences with SENT and articulate barriers and opportunities toward practicing empathy during clerkship...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Professional identity formation is a complex construct that continually evolves in relation to an individual's experiences. The literature on educators identifying as faculty developers is limited and incompletely addresses how that identify affects other identities, careers, and influences on teaching. Twenty-six health professionals were trained to serve as faculty developers within our educational system. We sought to examine the factors that influence the professional identity of these faculty developers and to determine whether a common trajectory existed...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Family physicians are uniquely poised to provide gender-affirming care (GAC) to transgender and nonbinary patients, but current undergraduate and graduate medical education in this field is lacking. Little is known about the impact of various GAC curricula on the clinical care provided by resident physicians. We aimed to assess the efficacy of a multimodal educational framework on the quality of GAC provided by residents at a large academic family medicine program...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Continuity of care is a core concept at the heart of primary care practices. Increased patient-provider continuity of care is associated with better satisfaction scores, better clinical outcomes, decreased hospitalizations and emergency department utilization, improved completion of preventive health services, adherence to medical treatment plans, and improved show rates. Compared to traditional outpatient practices, resident teaching clinics traditionally have lower rates of continuity and face unique challenges in improving continuity given the curricular demands, complex scheduling, and high turnover of providers...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Routine abortion training during family medicine (FM) residency leads to higher rates of postresidency provision; increased availability of abortion care in the FM setting could greatly improve access. Especially in the post-Dobbs context, understanding the landscape of abortion training in US family medicine residency programs (FMRPs) is critical. METHODS: We invited all directors of US FMRPs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to complete a larger omnibus online survey that included questions on abortion training...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Resident burnout may affect career choices and empathy. We examined predictors of burnout among family medicine residents. METHODS: We used data from the 2019-2021 American Board of Family Medicine Initial Certification Questionnaire, which is required of graduating residents. Burnout was a binary variable defined as reporting callousness or emotional exhaustion once a week or more. We evaluated associations using bivariate and multilevel multivariable regression analyses...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Proficiency in procedural care achieved during residency is a major driver of family physician scope of practice. To date, no inventory exists of the advanced procedures and clinical skills performed by teaching family physicians. This study comprises the first such survey and assesses the attitude of respondents toward the importance of family physicians performing procedures. METHODS: We sent a clinical skills inventory to a convenience sample of teaching family physicians employed at 18 medical school-affiliated, community, and military residency programs across the United States...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) are settings in which students in health professions gain clinical experience, often while providing free or reduced-cost health care to the surrounding community. The current literature quantifies the many benefits these clinics provide to their patients and the impact they have on students' future careers; but few previous studies have assessed the financial impact of the education provided at an SRFC. We report on a net educational benefit, an educational benefit to educational cost ratio, and a net educational benefit to educational cost ratio of one SRFC from the perspective of the university...
