Until now, the solubilization capacities of insoluble mineral P by soil microorganisms have been screened in vitro with media containing NH4+ as a nitrogen source. This presence of NH4+ will lead to an acidification of the medium responsible for the solubilization of the insoluble P. However, besides proton release, the production of organic acids can play a very important role in the release of free P. This physiological mechanism can largely depend on the source of nitrogen (NH4+vs NO3-) assimilated by the bacteria but the influence of the N source on the production of organic acids has yet to be studied...

MAIN OBJECTIVE: Systematically review and synthesize preoperative and intraoperative factors associated with pain after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with osteoarthritis. METHODS: Based on a peer-reviewed protocol, we searched Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and PEDro for prospective observational studies (January 2000 to February 2023) investigating factors associated with pain after TKA. The primary outcome was pain twelve months after TKA...

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is known to affect the central nervous system. Neurologic morbidity associated with COVID-19 is commonly attributed to sequelae of some combination of thrombotic and inflammatory processes. The aim of this retrospective observational study was to evaluate neuroimaging findings in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with neurological manifestations in cancer versus non-cancer patients, and in patients with versus without ventilatory support (with ventilatory support defined as including patients with intubation and noninvasive ventilation)...

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer morbidity and mortality, and all-cause mortality. Countries that implement strong policies are able to reduce ambient PM2.5 concentration. In Ethiopia, however, PM2.5 monitoring stations, laboratory technicians, and equipment are staggeringly limited. In this study, the spatial and temporal variation of PM2.5 in Ethiopia was assessed. METHODS: Satellite-based PM2...

BACKGROUND: Bone turnover balance favors bone formation, especially mineralization, during the first 3 years of treatment with TNF-α inhibitors (TNFi). Our aim was to evaluate the course of serum bone turnover markers (BTM) and to investigate if facilitation of mineralization reflected by BTM BALP continues to increase during 6 years of TNFi treatment in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in daily clinical practice. METHODS: Included were outpatients from the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) participating in the Groningen Leeuwarden Axial SpA (GLAS) cohort who were treated with TNFi for at least 6 years...

Zinc is an essential metal for cells, but excess amounts are toxic. Other than by regulating the intracellular zinc concentration by zinc uptake or efflux, the mechanisms underlying bacterial resistance to excess zinc are unknown. In the present study, we searched for zinc-resistant mutant strains from the Keio collection, a gene knockout library of Escherichia coli, a model gram-negative bacteria. We found that knockout mutant of RpmJ (L36), a 50S ribosomal protein, exhibited zinc resistance. The rpmJ mutant was sensitive to protein synthesis inhibitors and had altered translation fidelity, indicating ribosomal dysfunction...

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are major public health threats in upper- and lower-middle-income countries. Electronic health records (EHRs) are an invaluable source of data for achieving different goals, including the early detection of HAIs and AMR clusters within healthcare settings; evaluation of attributable incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs); and implementation of governance policies. In Italy, the burden of HAIs is estimated to be 702...

COVID-19 oral treatments require initiation within 5 days of symptom onset. Although antigen tests are less sensitive than RT-PCR, rapid results could facilitate entry to treatment. We collected anterior nasal swabs for BinaxNOW and RT-PCR testing and clinical data at a walk-up, community site in San Francisco, California between January and June 2022. SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequences were generated from positive samples and classified according to subtype and variant. Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to estimate the expected proportion of SARS-CoV-2 infected persons who would have been diagnosed within 5 days of symptom onset using RT-PCR versus BinaxNOW testing...

Panel data concerning variables of interest are collected from Pakistan Microfinance Network, covering a minimum of 14 partner organizations (in 2005) to a maximum of 35 partner organizations (in 2014). The data is analyzed using the Data Envelopment Analysis, assuming both constant and variable returns to scale scenarios and the operational scale of the partner organizations...

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) play a major role in aiding biomedical research and practices. To inform this research, the demand for highly accurate retrieval of scientific articles on RCT research has grown in recent decades. However, correctly identifying all published RCTs in a given domain is a non-trivial task, which has motivated computer scientists to develop methods for identifying papers involving RCTs. Although existing studies have provided invaluable insights into how RCT tags can be predicted for biomedicine research articles, they used datasets from different sources in varying sizes and timeframes and their models and findings cannot be compared across studies...

Hand and forearm injuries are the most frequent reason for consultations in German emergency departments. Therefore, full recovery has a high social and economic relevance. In this study, data on surgically treated hand injuries in a regional German trauma centre between 01.01.2019 and 31.01.2021 were collected using the new German HandTraumaRegister of the German Society for Hand Surgery. These data were retrospectively analysed and correlated with mobility data of the Bavarian population, the 7-day incidence of Covid-19 infections in Germany and the number of elective hand surgeries...

For older adults, acute hospitalization is a high-risk event with poor health outcomes, including functional decline. In absence of practical guidelines and high quality randomized controlled trials, this Delphi study was conducted. The aim of this study was to obtain consensus on an exercise intervention program, a core outcome set (COS) and handover information to prevent functional decline or restore physical function in acutely hospitalized older patients transitioning from hospital to home. COVID-19-related regulations have impacted the economy and people's well-being, highlighting the long-standing problem of inequality. This research explored how COVID-19-related restrictive policies, such as a lockdown or social distancing, affected people's well-being. In Study 1, a cross-sectional online survey (N = 685), we examined the associations between socio-economic characteristics, the number of resources, their relative change, people's stress levels, and their support of restrictive policies. We found that financial loss due to COVID-19, the number of children at home, and the intensity of restrictive measures were associated with higher stress by restrictive measures...
