Predatory publishers, also known as counterfeit, deceptive, or fraudulent, are organisations that exploit the open-access scholarly model by charging hefty article processing charges (APCs), often without the scientific rigour and ethical processes offered by legitimate journals. Their rising prevalence is of concern to the scientific community, as the consequences of falling victim to them can negatively impact academic integrity and reputation, and render an author's work worthless and untrustworthy. Common characteristics include inappropriate marketing and misrepresentation of services by targeting individuals with solicitation emails, inadequate peer-review processes, lack of editorial services and transparency about APCs, and false claims about citation metrics and indexing that cannot be verified...

The role of a drug holiday in the management of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) remains controversial. Current UK guidance does not recommend this practice given the lack of conclusive evidence, and potential risk of skeletal-related events or cancer metastasis. This paper aims to describe a series of fifty patients with confirmed MRONJ who were prescribed a drug holiday as part of their management. Data were collected on exposures including: anti-resorptive and/or anti-angiogenic drug history, duration of drug, method of administration, concurrent therapy, MRONJ stage, management of MRONJ and duration of drug holiday...

Cleft palate is a common maxillofacial congenital malformation, and its mechanism still has not been fully illustrated. Recently, lipid metabolic defects have been observed in cleft palate. Patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing 2 (Pnpla2) is an important lipolytic gene. However, its effect on the formation of cleft palate remains unknown. In this research, we explored the expression of Pnpla2 in the palatal shelves of control mice. We also studied mice with cleft palates induced by retinoic acid and its effect on the embryonic palatal mesenchyme (EPM) cells phenotype...

REVIEW

Surgical and minimally-invasive procedures, including cardiac and radiological, have high-stake patient outcomes. Working pressures, altering shift rotas, and ever-increasing demands have led to worsening sleep patterns for surgeons and allied professionals. Sleep deprivation alone has harmful consequences in relation to clinical outcomes and the physical and mental health of the surgeon, and to offset fatigue, some surgeons use legal stimulants such as caffeine and energy drinks. This stimulant use, however, may come at the cost of negative effects on cognitive and physical function...

Orbital fractures can result in devastating functional complications to sight and well-being, yet our understanding of functional sequelae post reconstruction is not well understood in the literature. This research retrospectively analysed the activity of a specialist orbital surgeon over five years to evaluate the incidence of, and risk factors for, debilitating complications such as diplopia and restriction of extraocular movement. Orbital fracture cases repaired between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2019 were retrospectively analysed...

The success of treatment for condylar fractures is usually assessed by functional outcomes, while studies on patient perceptions are scarce. A cross-sectional study was performed to assess the middle-term quality of life, related to both general health and oral health, of patients treated for subcondylar fracture, either by open reduction or by closed fixation, compared to healthy volunteers. In a single trauma centre, among 226 consecutive patients with subcondylar fractures that were treated in years 2018-2019 (two to three years prior to the survey), 148 fulfilled the selection criteria...

Entering into surgical academia can seem a daunting prospect for an oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) trainee. However, the streamlining of academic training by the NIHR to create the integrated academic training (IAT) pathway has simplified academic training and more clearly defined academic positions and entry points for trainees. In this article we review the current NIHR IAT pathway and the various grades and entry points available to OMF surgeons, both pre- and post-doctoral. We highlight the unique challenges facing OMF trainees and provide advice and insight from both junior and senior OMFS academics...

Retrieval of the displaced mandibular third molar in the floor of the mouth is challenging as the lingual nerve is always at risk of injury. However, there are no available data to show the incidence of the injury caused by the retrieval. The goal of this review article is to provide the incidence of the iatrogenic lingual nerve impairment/injury caused by the retrieval based on the review of the existing literature. The retrieval cases were collected with the search words below using PubMed, Google Scholar, and CENTRAL Cochrane Library database on October 6, 2021...

We aimed to assess the quality of life for head and neck carcinoma (HNC) patients who underwent soft tissue resection and reconstruction with double-paddle peroneal artery perforator (DPAP) free flap. The quality of life was assessed by means of the University of Washington quality of life (UW-QOL) and the 14-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaires at 12 months postoperatively. Data from 57 patients were retrospectively analysed. Out of these, 51 patients were at TNM stage III or IV. Finally, 48 patients finished and returned the two questionnaires...

Most of the current oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) specialty trainees in the United Kingdom (UK) remain as those who first undertook a degree in dentistry. However, OMFS is an increasingly popular career choice amongst 'first degree' medical school graduates. The UK medical school curriculum should reflect this trend by ensuring that there is sufficient teaching and exposure to allow medical students to make informed career choices. The purpose of this study was to evaluate levels of awareness of, exposure to, and teaching on, oral and maxillofacial surgery amongst undergraduate medical students in the UK...

There remains a paucity of evidence with regards to functional outcomes following the reconstruction of segmental defects in the mandible. It is, however, well recognised that oral rehabilitation following head and neck surgery is a driver of improved quality of life outcomes. We present a prospective service review of functional outcomes of a consecutive cohort of patients following segmental mandibulectomy and virtual surgical planning (VSP) composite fibular free-flap reconstruction. Twenty-five patients, who were identified as having a complete dataset with a minimum of 12 months' follow up, ultimately met the inclusion criteria...
