BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity of reported outcomes can impact the certainty of evidence for prehabilitation. The objective of this scoping review was to systematically map outcomes and assessment tools used in trials of surgical prehabilitation. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychInfo, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Cochrane were searched in February 2023. Randomised controlled trials of unimodal or multimodal prehabilitation interventions (nutrition, exercise, psychological support) lasting at least 7 days in adults undergoing elective surgery were included...

BACKGROUND: Limited knowledge exists regarding long-term renal outcomes after noncardiac surgery. This study investigated the incidence of, and risk factors for, developing advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and major adverse kidney events within 1 yr of surgery in a nationwide cohort. METHODS: Adults without renal dysfunction before noncardiac surgery in Sweden were included between 2007 and 2013 in this observational multicentre cohort study. We analysed data from a national surgical database linked to several national and quality outcome registries...

Patients who undergo laparotomy for major trauma are amongst the most critically unwell patients, and they have high morbidity and mortality rates. Despite 20 yr of improvements in resuscitation practices, those who present with hypotension continue to have mortality rates of up to 50%. Currently there is no mechanism for capturing national audit data on these patients, leading to their exclusion from potential quality improvement initiatives. We argue that there is an unmet need for quality assurance in this patient cohort and outline possible mechanisms to address this...

BACKGROUND: Numerous models have been developed to predict acute kidney injury (AKI) after noncardiac surgery, yet there is a lack of independent validation and comparison among them. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search to review published risk prediction models for AKI after noncardiac surgery. An independent external validation was performed using a retrospective surgical cohort at a large Chinese hospital from January 2019 to October 2022. The cohort included patients undergoing a wide range of noncardiac surgeries with perioperative creatinine measurements...

Prehabilitation aims to optimise patients' physical and psychological status before treatment. The types of outcomes measured to assess the impact of prehabilitation interventions vary across clinical research and service evaluation, limiting the ability to compare between studies and services and to pool data. An international workshop involving academic and clinical experts in cancer prehabilitation was convened in May 2022 at Sheffield Hallam University's Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, England. The workshop substantiated calls for a core outcome set to advance knowledge and understanding of best practice in cancer prehabilitation and to develop national and international databases to assess outcomes at a population level...

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain after injury poses a serious health burden. As a result of advances in medical technology, ever more military personnel survive severe combat injuries, but long-term pain outcomes are unknown. We aimed to assess rates of pain in a representative sample of UK military personnel with and without combat injuries. METHODS: We used data from the ADVANCE cohort study (ISRCTN57285353). Individuals deployed as UK armed forces to Afghanistan were recruited to include those with physical combat injuries, and a frequency-matched uninjured comparison group...
