BACKGROUND. Prediction of outcomes in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is challenging using current clinical predictors. OBJECTIVE. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the utility of machine learning (ML) models incorporating presentation clinical and CT perfusion imaging (CTP) data in predicting delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) and poor functional outcome in patients with aSAH. METHODS. This study entailed retrospective analysis of data from 242 patients (mean age, 60.9 ± 11...

BACKGROUND. Imaging reports that consistently document all disease sites with a potential to increase surgical complexity or morbidity can facilitate ovarian cancer treatment planning. OBJECTIVE. The aims of this study were to compare simple structured reports and synoptic reports from pretreatment CT examinations in patients with advanced ovarian cancer in terms of completeness of documenting involvement of clinically relevant anatomic sites as well as to evaluate physician satisfaction with synoptic reports...

Image-guided cryoablation is an emerging therapeutic technique for the treatment of breast cancer and is an effective alternate treatment strategy to surgery in select patients. Tumor features impacting efficacy of cryoablation include size, location in relation to skin, and histology (e.g., extent of intraductal component), underscoring the importance of imaging for staging and workup in this patient population. Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) has increasing utilization in both the screening and diagnostic settings and may be useful for follow-up imaging after breast cancer cryoablation related to high sensitivity for cancer detection and advantages in PPV, time, cost, eligibility, and accessibility compared to contrast-enhanced MRI...

Background: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) with perfluorobutane has used varying protocols and diagnostic criteria for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Objective: To assess diagnostic performance for HCC of CEUS with perfluorobutane in high-risk patients using various criteria. Methods: This retrospective post-hoc study, evaluating individual patient data from three earlier prospective studies from one hospital, included 204 patients (136 men, 68 women; mean age, 63±11 years) at high risk of HCC with 213 liver observations...

Background: The higher spatial resolution and image contrast for iodine-containing tissues of photon-counting detector (PCD) CT may address challenges in evaluating small, calcified vessels when performing lower-extremity CTA by energy-integrating detector (EID) CTA. Purpose: To compare the evaluation of infrapopliteal vasculature between lower-extremity CTA performed using EID CT and PCD CT. Methods: This prospective study included 32 patients (mean age 69.5±8.3 years; 27 men, 5 women) who underwent clinically indicated lower-extremity EID CTA between April 2021 and March 2022; participants underwent investigational lower-extremity PCD CTA later in the same day as EID CTA using a reduced IV contrast media dose...

Background: Although primary lung cancer is rare in children, chest CT is commonly performed to assess for lung metastases in children with cancer. Lung nodule computer-aided detection (CAD) systems have been designed and studied primarily using adult data, and such systems' efficacy on pediatric patients is poorly understood. Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic performance in children of traditional and deep-learning CAD systems trained with adult data for the detection of lung nodules on chest CT scans and to compare such systems' ability to generalize to children versus to other adults...

Background: Treatment options for patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) who develop stage I-II non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are severely limited, since surgical resection, radiation, and systemic therapy are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of percutaneous ablation of stage I-II NSCLC in patients with ILD. Methods: This retrospective study included patients with ILD and stage I-II NSCLC treated with percutaneous ablation in three health systems between October 2004 and February 2023...

Background: Dual-energy CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) with energy-integrating detector (EID) technology is limited by inability to use high-pitch technique. Objective: To compare image quality of anatomic images and iodine maps between high-pitch PCD CTPA and dual-energy EID CTPA. Methods: This prospective study included 117 patients (median age, 65 years; 70 men, 47 women) who underwent CTPA to evaluate for pulmonary embolism between March 2022 and November of 2022. Fifty-eight patients were randomized to undergo PCD CTPA (pitch, 2...

Breast imaging studies are complex examinations for patients and providers. Breast imaging providers and organizations invest significant resources in educating patients and referring providers to address variability in changing breast cancer screening recommendations, cultural biases, and socioeconomic barriers for patients. The breast imaging examination frequently involves multiple imaging modalities including interventional procedures, thus requiring multiple room types. Practices need to consider variables that affect workflow efficiency throughout the process of scheduling, examination performance, interpretation, and results delivery, as well as options in facilities design to create inviting yet functional environments for patients...
